I'm going to go and see the movie "World Trade Center"...this evening.  Has anyone else seen it?

krikket -> RE: World Trade Center (9/3/2006 3:13:45 PM)

My son saw the movie and he really liked it.  He said it's not so much the story of 911, but of 2 firemen and their families.  He also told me that most of the takes place underground.  i think he plans to see it again.

Hope you enjoy it.

cheers,
jimini

Well, I just got back from seeing the movie, it was ok, but I wouldnt recommend it.

I heard it was sappy as hell and monotonous.  The scenes with the families and stuff drag on and on.  Is this true?

Very true, I wasted my money on it...but, ya never know until you see it.  I wanted to see Pirates of the Carribean, ll, but my son wanted to see this one...oh well, maybe next time.....

It did drag on and on,,,I couldnt wait for it to be over.

I haven't seen it and probably won't until it comes out on DVD, if then.  What with Nicholas Cage starring in it, I'd expect a lot of over-acting and over-emoting.

I saw it. It was okay because the story was told in a very personal way, from the vantage point of two men trapped in the rubble underneath the Trade Center due to being resue workers who didn't get out in time. Considering how morbid this could have been, I appreciated the focus was on someon who was in the niddle of the horror, but managed to actually survive (to have them not survive would have been true, but so much less hopeful and hurl depression where no more can probably be bearde by some who might see it). And, considering Oliver Stone was the director, it could have been so depressing and a little "too real" (if you know what I mean) and I thought it was was almost unbelieveably free of cynicism.

But - I was a bit disappointed it only focussed on mostly two people. The story was told in a very simple, and straightforward way. Not a lot of artsy direction going on. But I do think that maybe the director thought focussing on more people might be reliving the horror, in a way. People have seen the footage of the first plane hitting the first Tower so many times by now, with the people diving out of windows and scrambling in the streets, I thought if that kind of enactment or footage was in it, I don't know if I'd have wanted to stay - I think I might have walked out. I think it was probably difficult to attempt to make this film, because almost any way you'd tell it you'd offend someone, probably - so many peoeple died - and it has only been five years since 9/11.

I think you are probably right, it was probably very difficult to make.  I haven't decided if I will go see it or not (I moved to NYC ten days before the planes hit... WELCOME to New York!) and probably won't see it in the theater, unless we decide to go when it hits the dollar theater.  I don't think it will trigger anything, or something like that, I just don't want to spend my hard-earned money on this, when I can be entertained by something funny instead.  But, on the other hand, it might be good to see the happy surviving story as well.  Yeah, I'm not exactly decisive right now.

I only lost one person that I knew very well because of the trade center, and it was because she killed herself last summer, in part because of PTSD from that day.  She was missing for two days after it happened until she was found in a hospital with a head injury.  She hadn't listened when the guards told her to stay inside (and that's what saved her) and was hit with falling debris.  The Mate, however, lost a couple of dozen folks he knew well and worked with; and was mere blocks away from it (watched the towers come down in person) when it happened.

Anyhow, coming from my POV, I don't think it's too soon.  There have already been many specials on it, on several different channels.  Those who don't want to see or hear about it can ignore the movie and not attend.  Sometimes the way to deal with things is to bury it, and sometimes it isn't, I suppose it just depends on the person.

I'd like to see it but it hits quite close to home for me. The Nicholas Cage roll went to college with my sister in NY in the 70's. My brother is a New York City Fire & Rescue EMT who by the grace of God was on vacation in North Carolina on 9/11. I went to about 50 memorial services in the following months in NYC. I don't want those feelings back.
