I have been on this site a while now,not really posting much,as I prefer to read,and learn.Now reading some of the posts,where there is a bit of a debate going on between a couple of people,I was wondering,if a person posts something which may be their thoughts,as they see things,and others post against that persons view of things,i.e.the majority think they are incorrect,does that person learn from the majority and modify their thought,or do they continue as normal.What about you lot here,what would you do?

I don't rely on groups and cliques to define how I think.

Sometimes I read things that change my mind about something. Sometimes posts clarify something for me so I adjust my thinking. But mostly I tend to agree with people who agree with me and disagree with people whose opinions are different than mine. But no matter what, I learn from what I read.

I certainly don't change my mind because most say I'm wrong, but I will listen with an open mind. It could be that one out of all the posts makes perfect sense to me. The question of whether or not the group dynamics in general work on me and others on this board is another issue. Over time if we are exposed to the themes and personalities of this board, we do change. Group dynamics are valid. We strive to be accepted by those we hold in esteem.

In a forum where others are able to have a healthy debate, I can often see different perspectives and it may or may not change my opinion on things. It depends on how strongly I feel about a topic or how well informed I was initially. It will at least open my eyes to another point of view. As in any environment, there are people that do not understand that concept and go on the attack.

I believe truth is one of the ultimate goals to aspire to, so I try to keep an open mind (another of life's highest values). So, yes, I can and do learn. But just because a large group is telling me I'm wrong means nothing, unless they can present reasoned argument as to why I should reconsider my posistion.

Yes, it is certainly possible for me to learn from any given situation. By the same token, it can at times be exceedingly difficult to admit that I am wwwrr.....wwrooo.....wroonnn.......wrong [:D]

Fairly much as others above me have said. I carry some fairly strong opinions, and most of them I've had for quite some time, for good reason. I can say that there are those I might not wish to be in the same room trying to have a decent conversation, but this medium allows me to at least see the words, rather than the people saying them, if I see fit. And then think or act accordingly. Yes, I find having additional insights, which is of course a good thing. Jeff

But no one can browbeat me into pc submission, not going to happen. And for those who take offense and think they can "punish" me for my opinions by following me about and bitching......there is always the "block feature". If I never reply to you, then you are probably on my "harpy list". <LOL>

Of course people learn! They have only to read my posts in order to learn all they need to LOL! Seriously though, I think it depends on the thread - the "community" boards are where one can learn a fair bit from time to time, but the "off topic" section no one seems to learn from!; any contentious thread (most often religion and/or politics) seems to bring people into opposing camps, the members of which rarely think over what has been posted except to spout back rebuttals. Thats fine, and a function of the thread in that even if no one is persuaded to vary their views, at least we all get to hear others' views. My only issue is that sometimes these very captivating subjects seem to turn into slanging matches, rather than civilised debate. E

Aneirin, I have learned here because there are people here that have more knowledge in certain areas than I do. The day of the renaissance man is over, simply too much information in many different areas. I firmly believe that living should be a constant learning experience. The day I quit learning is the time to plan the service with the sad singing and slow walking. As far as arguments go quality always trumps quantity. I had that drilled into me as a philosophy major with an emphasis on logic. Outlier

It is funny that few here think I should change my views because they have a different view than mine, and my view appears to be in the minority.

I enjoy differing points of view, however, when it comes to making decisions that impact my own life; I rely on me and me only. That way, if things do not work out as planned, I have only myself to blame [:)]

I am not so rigid in my views that any opposing view is bounced right off of me without any consideration. I am open to considering logical, well thought out positions. To do otherwise would be to think I am right all the time, and that would be my first mistake. This does not mean my mind will necessarily change because of opposing views. Naturally, if they do not make sense to me based on my values and principles, then I will keep my position on the subject.

If you are asking if i will side with the majority and conform, well, the answer is no. i don't conform unless i feel it is in my best interest to do so. grin If you are asking if i learn from considering other's perspectives, then yes, i do. smile
