Seems we have been blessed/cursed with a group of posters who seek out the most incendiary of topics to post (and yes, i s'times respond) and i wonder why?  Aren't there better ways for U/us to use our time here?

Nope, we are all just insecure losers who have nothing better to do with our time than create petty cyber tyrannies.

       Are we supposed to only be 'radicals' in how we love?

I think that in a global community such as CM hosts there is not one topic that will not be incendiary to at least a percentage of the members. I rather enjoy the fact that these topics can be discussed and/or heatedly debated with people from all walks of life and from all around the world. I would give my eye teeth to allow my undergrad students the opportunity to enjoy this mix of people, passions, viewpoints; the diversity is amazing. There is seldom a day that I do not learn sommething new or see something in a different light when reading the forum postings. In fact the very idea that people not post a topic that is of interest even if incendiary is abhorrent to me and, I would argue harmful to the community. As John Stuart Mill said;
The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.

To each their own.  We all know the poster's who post for attention or to get into arguments.  We choose to go with them or ignore them.
Quality of time is what it comes down to.  Either you care to waste your life away or you don't.
Myself I grew up ages ago and don't care to play with children anymore.
So, I don't.  Though some like playing with children..personal preference is all it is.

i agree with you,sub4hire.  what i need is better self-control to let bigotry and other crap just wash over me and not react; i am struggling with that.  But i'll get better.  i guess today was particularly bad for me; i am just saddened and shocked at what has become of these forums.

When your definition of bigotry and crap is when someone posits an opinion you don't share, it's no wonder you get upset.

Of course there are, but if I can't be doing those better things I might as well chime in on whatever topic catches my eye.

There is nothing more boring than back patting threads where everyone agrees. Maybe I'm childish but I enjoy the ding-dong of debate and what is the point of free speach if being upset or upsetting someone else is not allowed. I think it is says a lot about the people on CM that heads can be smashed together and people remain civilised. It's entertainment and sport and along the way there are some very interesting points made.

One of the beauties of this "off topic" section is that it is possible to carry thru' controversial debate rather than just let things go as would happen in a face to face confrontation. I love it !

Pinkee I am going to be really bigoted now...I think you should ditch that awful pink text...he he he he

You know, this may sound bad, but I really don't pay that much attention anymore to the bad threads.  I have a life outside of these boards, and I come in here to learn, and have fun...I ignore the rest.

.......and what's the alternative? To have a series of topics off limits for discussion? Some subjects arouse strong and inciendary emotions not because those discussing them have nothing better to do, but because they're important.
