I am courious. A lot of people want to rid the US of the Military and of NASA as unnecessary expenses. I wonder, how many improvements to our daily lives can you think of that is a result of the military or NASA?

I'll name a couple just to start off.

Concentrated orange juice was created to feed our troops during WWII to help prevent disease.
Microwaves were started cause some fool stood in front of an operating radar and got singed slightly.

NASA is one of the greatest PR assets America has. Only a fool would get rid of it. My guess is that the majority of people in the world are fascinated by space exploration when it is brought to life. Reaching the moon might not have brought the human race its greatest knowledge but it was spell binding. I'm an armchair scientist and I'm sure professional scientists can think of better ways to spend money but the romance of space, though somewhat diminished of late could be relit.

Satellites that can pinpont a pot plant in a corn field using near/far IR and UV.

Yup, I know axactly how it works too. When you see red you don't know if you're actually seeing red or a mixture of two slightly different reds that your eye percieves a a shade somwhere in between the two different reds.

Same with green, with spectroscopy they can tell alot more, even the temperature of an object. Although not at any decent resolution, they can indeed see through the roof of your house with IR. Can't see everything but they can tell how many people are there usually.

Satellite TV

It is so great, when you go out, go to work, go wherever, you can be proud to pay for 300 channels of programming. Twenty four hours a day, except when they go to infomercials.

Onstar

No criminal in their right mind would steal a car with Onstar. They even know if you're cheating on your Wife. They know right where you are all the time.

Tracking chips

Not fantasy, not sci-fi anymore. Dogs in CA over a certain weight must be implanted so they can be tracked. Let's start putting them in criminals, in fact let's put them in everybody.

Depleted uranium

It's going to leave Iraq and Afganistan unable to sustain life for a very long time. That'll learnem. They will have to buy food, they certainly won't be growing it even if the climate becomes favorable. Our enemies will be vanquished by our leaders with a form of genocide that is so insidious that they might never be brought to account for it.

Stolen by Israelis and sold straight to Russia and Saddam. Also the Israelis put a back door in the program for their own purposes, something the US software engineers seem to have forgotten. I think near every potential REAL enemy we have has a copy, thanks to our "ally". While they hold the key to the backdoor, they also collected the King's ransom this software fetches.

HAARP

I know little about this, but what I have heard is not good. It is rumored that they can almost control the climate, I have also heard that smaller implementations of HAARP can be used for crowd control. That is if you are in a demonstration group, perhaps a violent demonstration group as envisioned by the Founding Fathers, they can point this thing at the crowd and everybody feels the need to take a piss, RIGHT NOW. Shit, then they just drive away. Come back later with more people.

Our BRAVE forces would never hurt anyone, unless they outmatch them by a large margin.

Your TV, your telephone, your car, all NOT invented by the government. Houses were not invented by the government. Nothing really important to us has been invented by the government. They invent things for themselves, more ways to snoop. More ways to extract every fucking dollar from us they can. That seems to be all they do anymore.

i almost started a thread entitled 'improvements to our life due to liberal thinkers', but realised that some of them worked for the military and NASA.
It's well known that war accelerates the rate of technological discovery, and while i can't find a quote i am sure that someone once said that NASA was an attempt to force that same drive to innovate in a peacetime context.
Oh, and as a quick answer, RADAR and Jet Aircraft.......both invented by european militaries.......

The spinnoffs are many, some good, some bad. I was at a discussion of sharpening, a topic of interest to woodworkers, and they is a cool new abrasive that doesn't allow the worn abrasive and metal to contact the surface being polished that came out of grinding better lenses for spy satalites...

As for NASA, the reason the Republicans want to gut it is because it keeps generating facts (and we all know what a liberal bias THOSE have) about global climate change and we want to remain ignorant as long as possible I guess.

Lol. I was waiting to see how long before the Republicans would be maligned with this issue. It just never ends. I have not seen any concerted effort by Republicans to end NASA. There have been budget cuts to NASA through the years, but I doubt that these were implemented by just Republicans. You forgot to mention that Republicans hate Tang.

Don't know about jet engine, but Tesla invented Radar.

Tesla, in August 1917, first established principles regarding frequency and power level for the first primitive RADAR units. [27] In 1934, Emile Girardeau, working with the first French RADAR systems, stated he was building RADAR systems "conceived according to the principles stated by Tesla".

I've been reading and watching alot about Tesla, and this is stated over and over again as one of his invention though primitive and credit is due to others for perfecting it, but they didn't invent it, so even if wikipedia isn't the best source it is pretty easy to verify.

.......you may well be right, i was basing my assertion on radar systems used by the British in WW2. Entirely possible that the principles and even a prototype had been done before. However, my general point about war accelerating technological innovation still stands. First major use of the technology was wartime. Tesla also first conceptualised AC/DC, but i dont think he was the one dressed as a school-boy......

Tesla pioneered electromagnetic properties research involving primarily alternating current (AC) as opposed to the predominant direct current (DC) battery-type approaches of the era. I guess if it were not for NASA, we would not have pc's since computer equipment needed to be downsized to fit into small areas comparatively to the computers of the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's. We would not have Tang, nor would we have retort packaged foods (aka MRE's [Meals ready-to-Eat]}. Laser technology would not be where it is. We would not have Satellite TV, Wi-Fi, nor HDTV. And only those lucky enough to afford it would be able to record their TV programs on the 1" Beta Videotapes.

And if it weren't for military technological advances, we would not have NASA.

As you know, a regular ballpoint or fountain pen will not work in space, because they use gravity to pull the ink down. So, during the space race, both Russia and America encountered the problem of writing in space.

The Americans proceeded to develop a pen that could write upside down, under water, in space, and on a diamond, which cost $100 000 000 to develop.

The Russians used a pencil.

What? You're telling me Americans aren't that stupid????? LOL

Actually, I knew it was false, but I just realized now that my statement is entirely true - the Russians used a pencil, and the Americans, or a certain group of Americans (Which is always the case; an entire nation rarely does anything, only people within it) did indeed develop a space pen that could do all that.

So it left out the fact that Americans also used a pencil, and that it was a private company that decided to develop the pen. What am I, on trial here?

Fascinating topic Ken, I apologise for the somewhat culturally based input (but as I have shared military application is not my strong field, and I can now fess up to space technology retardation as well) *lol*

Technology developed by a Canadian East Coast company for applications in space is now being commercialized by a West Coast company for terrestrial applications as wide ranging as medical devices, humanoid robotics and music controllers. The technology is Kinotex, a “digital skin,” sometimes referred to as a smart fabric

Intera Technologies Ltd. Initially based in Calgary, the company later opened offices in Ottawa, Ontario; Houston, Texas; and the United Kingdom. The company’s expertise was in remote sensing, including radar surveillance of Earth from aircraft and satellites. They eventually developed other niche opportunities, applying their radar technology to ice reconnaissance in the Beaufort Sea and other map-making in both northern and tropical belts.

I am still not sure what use that CANADARM has down below.
