......metaxis.........two worlds, one place. Religion and faith use this idea a lot (and so does the theatre, but thats another story). We all share a world, regardless of our spiritual discoveries and beliefs. The physical world. Beyond that, who knows? Some claim a knowledge of a universe through such journies and i wont gainsay them unless they attempt to impose their perceptions on me. The subjective reality of someone else is a bona fide reality but doesn't apply to me.

Philo - very true.

I've had an experience of the divine - I have written about it on this thread as well as I'm able to put it into words. But for anyone else who has not had such an experience, its questionable at best and evidence of insanity at worst. In the end its not possible for someone else to accept it, until or unless they experience it for themself, and there's no point in trying to convince them of its objective reality or force them to accept it.

Not to say that some disagree on that point mind. I suspect those who try to force spiritual/religious beliefs on others have never had such an experience, as if they had they would not be quite so arrogant to do so.

Going back to the "bright" versus "intelligent" point.  First, I think the words are subject to one's understanding of what they mean.  For me, intelligence is synonymous with having a high degree of awareness; not just about a particular subject but everything around you.  This contradicts what Rule is offering as you can see.

To be "bright" is really the same thing for me.  People with high intelligence (brightness) can take in a situation and comprehend it immediately and accurately.  The definition Rule gives for being "bright," I assign to the word, "smart."  A person can know a great deal (they are smart) and still not be able to process it effectively when confronted with an unknown.

It's no surprise that highly trained scientists exhibit clumsiness outside the realm of their field.  They are like a spotlight, focusing intensely on a particular subject rather than like a floodlight that illuminates a wide field.

I was skimming back over this thread and I noticed that Chaingang said this
The Problem of Evil
----------------------
A good God would destroy evil.
An all powerful God could destroy evil.
Evil exists and is not destroyed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Therefore, there cannot possibly be such a good and all powerful God.
lets try this
The Problem of Evil
----------------------
A good God could destroy evil.
An all powerful God could destroy evil.
Evil exists and is not destroyed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Therefore for some reason unfathomable to Homo Sapiens, a good and all powerful God  has chosen not to eradicate evil

Isn't it easy to to prove what we assume to be true by the careless use of words.
Isnt that the point that Susan ?? made. ?

Bit late in the day but I dont care.
Dont start on me because I am an Agnostic  who cannot believe that the Universe as we see it could possibly have come about by chance.

Wisdom, seeks. Well done.

The Creator created himself, and the god of Evil, and the other primary gods.
The Creator cannot destroy the god of Evil.
Evil exists and is not destroyed.

Therefore: it all still is as it was designed to be. The evil lion still murders the good sheep.

(Actually, evil has gone nuts during the past centuries, so there are very hard times ahead. This is a serious design flaw.)

Naw, really that's hogwash. Just read The Book of Job, it's pretty clear that the conception of god there is just interested in unquestioned authority. Someone, even in ancient times, must have seen the nonsense for what it was and snuck it into the old testament.

The Book of Job is pretty interesting overall. You basically have God and the Adversary taking bets about what Job will or will not do under certain stressful conditions.

-----

Another way to address that is to wonder why the all good god doesn't want to destroy evil. If evil is somehow necessary, maybe it's not all evil. But then...

So? There were many gods in those days. To which one is Job refering?

That was a commercial?
I thought that was a memory from my childhood.

I would like to add that, regardless of their philosophical or religious meaning (or lack thereof) to those assembled here, these images brought me to tears.

I think tonite it's scones with lemon curd and clotted cream.
There's a lovely Earl Grey brewing as we speak.
If only those boys would remember to keep their napkins on their laps and refrain from dropping the f-bomb...
