i simply loved the forum stated by INSIDEYOURMIND pertaining to the His/hers tatoos.

i read this on a yahoo board yesterday:
Years ago when i lived on Oahu i met a couple on the
beach who were to me the very meaning of "in love".
Their body langage spoke volumes.
Each had a tat located in the lower abdomen/pubic area
which was visiable above their bathingsuit
bottoms. When i asked the women what her symbol meant
she said it was japanese for slave.
His was japanese for Master.
Smiling, she went on to say that each night the
symbols always touched before they sleept.

my question is...i want a tat of "obedience."
i can't find it in kanji as i have searched.

anyone?

thanks
shy

You might want to enlist the services of a Japanese calligrapher who can help you come up with a design you like.

Eri Takase would be an excellent choice, but there are many others who can help you as well.

(curiosity here, not mean-ness. I see a lot of kanji tattoos and wonder what motivates people to get them)

The ineresting thing about people who get kanji characters for tattoos. . .most of them don't *really* know what the characters are. I remember seeing one tattoo on a girl's back. I guess she thought she was getting the tattoo of the 4 seasons in kanji. . .she got 3 of them. . .but for "summer". . .they put the kanji for "hot"

I see a lot of examples like that. . .Japanese and Chinese people probably just look at them and laugh.

M. Jules-

What is the word for 'service'? is it 'giri'? I have been trying to think of it all morning...

Stay warm,

Lawrence,

There are *SO* many words for service. . .it would depend on the context in which you want to use the word service. The word "giri" doesn't really have an English equivalent. . .but it has similar connotations to the word "service". . .but the use of that word would be more along the lines of "considerate, courteous, upstanding"

Someone who has a strong "giri" is someone who promptly repays their debts, doesn't always take but gives when appropriate, is punctual. . .etc. (I just called my mom and asked for verification as to the definition. . .she says it is used mostly with like describing samurai or yakuza. . .regular people don't describe each other in terms of "giri."

If my memory isn't failing me, I believe that 'giri' is 'duty'.

"duty" is a closer definition to the word than "service", yes.

M. Jules-

you know, your brain is so sexy, you could look like my mom, and I'd still think you were hot...

there is a word that is something like 'hamurra' that might mean service. Most of my foreign langue skills were picked up in the gutter, but 'giri' I got from a corporate salaryman who likely though of himself as a samuri of sorts. 'Hamurra' means, I think something like zen-work- not meaning the work one does for one's practice, but meaning the work that one brings ones practice to.

Sigh. My Roshi at the Diamond Gate seemed to think that we could communicate without having a common language, by speaking at me very sincerly. I suspected he might have been having fun with me ,too.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

I can't say one way or the other on that word because the only "Hamura" I know was the name of a neighboring town. (So you *could* be right)

i like the beauty of it and have done some research to know that if the concept is there,
any artist can do his own rendering.

The ineresting thing about people who get kanji characters for tattoos. . .most of them don't *really* know what the characters are.

tis why i don't want a literal translation, i know enough Shona and Swahili to know that literal translations are generally not the concept wanted or needed.

INSIDE... the wrap around tail is great! gives me an idea..thanks!

The closest i have come to "obey/obedience" is "selfless serivce" in Chinese characters.

i wonder if that is a good rendering of a female who faithfully obeys??

I once tried to, in calligraphy type symbols with charcoals from the firewalk I did with my son many years ago, do what I had been told were the symbols for mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" although I couldn't say what language the symbols were in. They were the symbols I've often seen on tibetan articles.

My mother-in-law at the time, who is so japanese you can barely understand her after 50 years in the U.S., said that in japanese it meant something akin to "emotional strength."

That was close enough for me. I was greatful that she didn't laugh and happy that SOMEBODY could read it and get a sense of what I was hoping to convey. :)

That is because you are a smartie!!! Stef sent me a link where there were several examples of people thinking their chinese character tattoos meant one thing. . .but it totally meant something else. I hope she posts it so others can laugh too.

LOVE those links!

I'm not any smarter than anyone else who knows she's a guest when traveling in a foreign country (and the same could be said about meddling in foreign cultures and forms of communication).

I don't think we're THAT much in a minority! At least I hope not.

That's it. Come Monday, the uniform du jour for you is a pink leotard, with a pink tutu, and pink pantent thigh hi ballet boots.

Madame-

I am a bad man.

Last night I convinced the drunk girl at the bar that her Kanji tattoo really said "sleeps with everyone" after she told me it was Japanese for 'sexy woman'. She was so upset she left before I could explain...

the really funny thing was that I am pretty sure it was Hexgram 51 'arrousing' or 'shocking' (which I had to look up this morning):
