siouxie -> microsoft windows help, please (9/10/2006 11:26:19 AM)

If anyone out there fancies giving me a bit of a hand with viewing my pictures it'd be much appreciated.  Basically, my image viewer is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, evrything works fine when viewing my digital photos, except those that have been taken portrait style need rotating. This always worked fine until a couple of months ago when I clicked ok to some message or other (i know, i know, read the damn things), and now my images won't rotate using the little 'rotate clockwise' or 'rotate counter-clockwise' buttons, or the menu.

Anybody a computer whizz who'd be able to help me out?

Many thanks.

Let's see.......... I'm googling this.

Try this:

Here's a simple fix you can try:

If you previously checked "In the future do not
show me this dialog box" when a dialog warned
about the possibility of reducing the quality of
your images, the following fix may restore your
option to rotate.

Open a picture in the Windows Picture And Fax
Viewer. Hold down the Ctrl key and left click the
X in the top right corner of the window.

Or:

To fix, right-click a picture in your My Pictures folder and click
Preview.
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer should open.  Hold down CTRL and click
the X
button in the upper right of the window.  You should get a dialog that
says
warnings have been reset.  Click OK.
Now go back to My Pictures and see if you can rotate.

You're welcome. Now that you "owe" me one, I'm going to collect. Don't call the pics of yourself "horrendous", you're a pretty woman.

If you have a number of images or photos that you need to work with, I recommend a small but powerful viewer program I've used for many years, through many versions of Windows. This program is called VuePrint, and is authored by Ed Hamrick.

Photographers, corporations and home users around the world use VuePrint to quickly and efficiently view and print images. VuePrint also includes features for cropping images, converting image formats, reducing the size of images for e-mail, and easily browsing through large collections of images... and much more, a great little tool for images and pics.

Visit http://www.hamrick.com and check out Vueprint and a few other nice applications Ed has available on his website.

siouxie,

NastyDaddy took the words right out of my mouth except I and
everyone I know use a free image viewer and have for years.

http://Irfanview.com

It will do 80 or 90% of what any pay viewer will do and it
uses minimum resources to do it.  Everyone I have ever
turned on to it has made it their default image viewer.

I had tried Irfran before trying Vueprint... Vueprint is a single small executable that is installed into the windows folder, no installed Program Files Folder full of associated files.

In addition, Ed has a small and free utility (vueslide) to run a slideshow of images from a folder, CD-ROM or data DVD, and the autorun.inf file to burn onto CD/DVD so the slideshow runs automatically when the CD/DVD you create is inserted.

Vueprint is available for Windows and Mac OS's both.

Ed also has a program called VueScan for scanners and digital cameras (Vuescan and Vueprint are his two shareware programs, try/buy, but contain NO spyware or adware). Vuescan is one of the best and easiest scanner/digital camera interfaces available, providing better resolutions than the scanner/camera provided software.

Irfran is ok and free yes... but most shareware programs can be also, with a simple internet search. [;)]

Try them all and pick what serves you best... Windows Fax and Photo viewer is very limited in actual capability, and I really hate people being controlled by using Bill Gates/Microsoft products only... too many third party programs are way better in function.

Ed Hamrick also was/is very instrumental in the development of the PNG image format which is now becoming prevalent on the net.

I like using ACDsee, but it is not free.  I think even Google has one now if I recall correctly.
