Jewel and i just got the last two books in the Dark Tower series by Steven King and Scooter looks slightly amazed and confused at the way we are simply devouring them so i want to ask if anybody else is reading or has read them?

Or have there been other series you just had to finish?

As for me the 9 years or so between the third and forth books in this series got me so irritated sometimes i often threatened to drive to Maine and treat Mr. King to my own version of Misery to make him finish the damn series, lol.

Robert Browning is better.

The Dark Tower became King's "multiverse" story in which he attempts to make a unity of much of his writing. Ultimately it's not much better than a soap opera. I much prefer the neo-classical starkness of the Roland in the first book, for me it's all downhill after that...

I read the first three but haven't read any more. I didn't care for the third so waiting for the fourth wasn't a big deal for me.

How many are out now?

I too preferred the first books but i had to read the end.

MizSuz, there are 7 now, the 7th being the last book.

I pretty much felt the same way. Unfortunately it was in those years as well when his writing turned from "intriguing story with a tendency to overindulge in inner thoughts of characters" into "pages/chapters of pointless meanderings and self-indulgent reflection towards scraps of actual plot progression."

I haven't finished the series (don't do hardbacks), and while I liked Wizard and Glass due to it's RF connections and other references, it will take something special to make anything after the third one seem truly awesome.

I've read them all, and its ends in a way that I enjoyed but many, many have not, will not and will lead some to wishing the drunk driver had done it right.

LA you really do have to get the rest, book 4 is good and book 5 is great but Jewel just finished book 7 and is pissed and stated "you are going to be so mad, that man really has a strange sense of humor". So i have to finish book 6 to see what she means about book 7 though i swear somebody may have to tie me up to keep me from just reading the end of the damn thing!

I loved the first 4, then when he started mixing in his other writings, I though it went down hill. I didn't mind the actual ending, but I hated having it all sludged together with his other writings. I thought it was much better when it stood alone.

I have read them all and now have my oldest daughter on them..she too is loving the series. Now if only JK Rowling would get off her ass and put out the last Harry Potter book, my life will be complete.. LOL

*lol* to scootertrash (tech manual)...and yes twice happy have read them and enjoyed them for the most part but they kinda flagged towards the end.

At the moment I am cramming for the A+ exam. Then it will be the Network+ exam, then (not necessarily in this order) the MCDST Exam, MCSA, Security+, MCSE and CCNA exams.

The next 11 months are going to have me foaming tech garbage out of all orifi. I'm going to need brain candy. If I can find the time around 16 hours of school a week, associated study, and my full time job.

I've always thought that about King. I discovered SK in my 20s, by then he already had a significant body of work out. My first was TommyKnockers, and although many people thought it was a poor piece, I spent a good deal of time going "eeeewwwww, this guy is WHACKED" while not being able to pull myself away.

I subsequently picked up The Stand on a friday evening and closed the book, finished, Monday morning. I was hooked.

I've always seen "the dark man" as a recurring character wrapped in different identities throughout many of his books. I don't think the dark tower is any different.

But you're right. The man is bent (I really do kinda like it).

I read the first three books years ago but then forgot about them during the long wait for the fourth book. Now, thanks to you people

, I'm going to have to read the rest just to find out what the hell this ending is all about. First though I'll have to re-read the first three books because I really don't remember much about them. Something about a cowboy who travels between worlds and meets a young boy, a crazy lesbian in a wheelchair, and a talking train, right? I think there was a drunk in there somewhere too, but then there is a drunk in almost every one of King's books.

"The Stand" was Kings best book by far. People who enjoyed it might also enjoy "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon.
