TreSwank -> Loving the 50's (Heavy Sarcasm) (9/13/2006 6:09:26 AM)

Back in the swell old days of homogeneous, hive-like housing units and propaganda-fueled Bolshevik witch-hunts, being a MAN meant something to most Americans.  Oh yes.........Wonderbread citizens stood tall, and with an iron-resolve that served as a moral adhesive, gluing together the W.A.S.P community like Ward and June Cleaver.  The times were as simple as long division, and the morality was in classic black and white: 1. Communists-Bad   2. Sexual Deviants-Bad  3.  Jaywalking-Really Bad  4. Teen Pregnancy-Bad  5. Interracial dating- Take a wild guess.

Christ........back then, people even understood that alcoholism was a litmus strip indicator of moral depravity, and that woman who drank..... well; you can only spell HARLOT with so many letters.  In the 1950's, domestic violence was an accepted teaching method that helped women realize just how important it was to cook a steak THE RIGHT WAY

Math?  If the ladies couldn't crunch those big, scary numbers in their flighty, inefficient brains, they sure could compensate by making a toilet sparkle with that custodial Midas-touch, so beloved by anyone with tits and a vagina.  The thing that I love MOST about the 50's is that virgin newlyweds were as commonplace as roughneck sailors who indulged in sexual congress with women of questionable virtue.

Ahhhhhh!!!  How wonderful to look back on better times!!!

perhaps the reason for lack of communication in today's family/relationships??? were these times simpler or merely less tolerant?

I have no love for the '50's at all. I don't see it as a simpler nor more tolerant period in time. I see it as a time of silent submission to the ideals set forth by a bunch of people who thought they knew what was good for everyone. This meant you didn't try to be different, you followed the rules as they had been laid out and kept your mouth shut. If you didn't like it you internalized it and dreamed of a far away land where you could be your own person.
In fact we here in the US are currently undergoing another time of silent submission (for the most part)as a good majority of people flock to the fundamentalists churches seeking redemption and a place in *heaven*. They say the reason our country is going down the tubes is because of lack of *morals* or because women are working outside of the home or because of a *blurring* of the roles. The hell with the roles, society doesn't dictate who I am and what I will do.. I say its going down the tubes because people want to shove their ideals down everyone's throat and people don't know how to think outside of the box anymore. I say mind your own business and do your thing and I'll do mine.
If people didn't try to shove their beliefs down peoples throats, if people didn't get all pissy and scream for blood when others were different from them, if people opened their minds and shut their mouths the world might just be a better place.
I truly would like to see what the world would be like in say 500 years from now, the changes it has undergone and if people will think of our time as a more "gentle and simpler time" or as a time of 'barbarians and unenlightenment"

Right this very second the only thing I can say I have a fondness for from the 50's was the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz.
