Who could not notice the newly appearing "Donation" box? Will CollarMe go the way of others? Lure a whole bunch of folks in with free postings and interaction...then when big and perhaps profitable enough....let the hammer fall and demand $$ to be a member...Time Will Tell. Better get all your contacts real email addresses NOW....

I wouldn't blame them if they did. I suppose you don't know the cost it involves to run a website with a lot of members and activity. Just by the virtue of you browsing this website. . .you are eating up bandwidth. Most hosting plans charge by bandwidth. There is also a lot of time on the part of the person running this site involved. Since you seem to think it is a easy task. . .and the right of the people to have a free site. . .why don't you purchase a domain (freebdsm.com has a nice ring to it) and pay for some hosting and run your own free site.

Part of me hopes that they do exactly that. Perhaps then we'll all be free of the 'enlightened' user that's been here for two days, has contributed absolutely nothing, yet still feels the need to criticize the system.

I've been a cm member for a year, at zero cost to myself. I also pitch in with some of the other 'background functions' that happen on this site and know just how very much work it is (and tedious and tiresome and...). I also own a domain (that I've owned for years) and do all my own webwork. That doesn't include the cost of servers and the like, which this site demands, nor the cost of the hardware that constantly has to be upgraded to accommodate the number of users taking advantage of the facilities (while still trying to keep it fast enough to not be inconvenient for users). I know how much this stuff can cost and it ain't cheap. My point is a lot of work and money go into this site and there has never been a charge for it to the users.

Donations are a wonderful way to help keep the site going. You'll note there are no pop up ads, no ads loading in the page first, etc., on this site and you will not get spam because the membership email list is not sold.

While I can appreciate you're leary because other sites have gone that way, my suggestion would be to sit back for a while and just watch and enjoy the free services you are currently enjoying. I think you'll find that you either love it here and wish to participate in whatever way you can or you'll move along to something more suited to you.

The former has been true for me. I find this site to very much be a positive contribution to the community and hope that the donations reflect the awesome spirit of those I have interacted with here. If so, they'll corner the "market" and be able to do so without charging for a long time to come.

Frankly, I'm amazed they haven't asked for donations sooner. As others have said, its no weekend hobby running a site like this and no small investment in $$$. How many hours do you suppose the folks running this site put in on a weekly basis? You'd be surprised how much.

Its funny that people who use a free site, and a very good one at that, get their panties in a bind when the host dares to ask for voluntary contributions. To be honest, I wouldn't mind if they charged a nominal annual fee to keep the riff-raff outa here.

As everyone has stated, to maintain this site for everyones use free of charge it can be very costly to the owner(s). We all love the fact that it's free because of all the great features and services they provide. Let's be lucky and thankful they aren't charging and simple asking for a donation. Think of it this way, if 50% of all the members on this site contributed just $1 a month, Im sure it would pay for the expenses which are incurred to keep this site running. Donating $1 isnt going to hurt anyone that much. Save the change that's in your pocket and the end of the day and at then end of the month, dontate all your loose change. I know quite a few people who have been kind enough to donate $50 as I will be doing myself and I thank them for their contribution in helping to keep this service free for everyone.

There's an old saying, ya pay peanuts, ya get monkeys!

I hope you get your whole ten dollars worth.

I have been a member for a while now, I have met great people, and my wonderful sub, to me, the site is priceless.

in a perfect world, everything would be free forever. However, this world ain't perfect.

- i pay for my online service because of the people who provide me a service and support.
- i pay to play video games online so servers are maintained and content is added.
- i don't see CollarMe as any different, they have the same responsibilities

i'm currently in the process of working on a webcomic, its something i'm going to share with the world for free in exchange for exposure and adding to my portfolio. Still, its going to cost me money to do it, i'll have not only foot the bill on art supplies/scanners/Photoshop and possbily webspace and bandwidth, but give up time i could be doing other things. So would i be a complete jerk for throwing on a banner for PayPal donations?

i don't think so.

if CollarMe wants to charge eventually, they can. As it stands now, i'd be willing to pay for the service this site provides. Be thankful they're only suggesting donations.

For me, anytime someone provides a service of value to me, I am apreciative and thankfull. If at some point collarme decides to charge a fee (hopefully one not too high), I would happily pay to be here, because it's a service I use and value; in fact I'm very surprised they are free for being such a good site and working so well (with exception of a recent blackout). Interesting opinion, to say the least. i do have a few questions which you may be able to answer.

How many domains do you, yourself, currently own, operate and fund Daddy4BabieGirl? If any, of those domains, what is the current traffic rate for each? What are the bandwidth limits? How much does your web host charge you when the bandwidth limits are exceeded? Do you do all of the coding, design & updates to these sites yourself, or do you pay others to see to those details? What is the total monthly/quarterly/annual amount you are liable for once all of those expenses are added up? Please post the URLs to any domains YOU currently own & operate. i would love to check the registrar of any sites you might own, from which i would ( & can ) begin to compare the expenses involved.

Collarme.com is a huge site which i am certain consumes enormous bandwidth levels. The site holds a very high & solid ranking with many search engines. The number of registered users is impressive with a high rate of new members registering daily. i own two domains, and each share a comparable ranking with Google and others when searched, and a high traffic level as well. i KNOW first hand the reality of the expenses involved. What do you know about it? What are the URLs of your sites? i'd love to visit them and analyze & estimate what your total expenses are as a result of owning them.

You are here by privilege, not *right*, and are enjoying the privilege at another's expense. Stop whining and being so cheap. Instead, if you are so concerned about the site suddenly leaning towards the possibility of charging it's members, do something constructive such as perhaps donating a few bucks.

This site is unique in it's services provided to members, well moderated & rates very well in what it offers in comparison to other free sites. i for one would rather pay a fee to visit a superior site than surf another of lesser quality for free.

Well, I admit I'd be sad if collarme went pay. I couldn't afford it then, and I'd miss it.

That said, I wouldn't blame 'em.

I'm gonna donate my 5$. Sad, I know, but it's what I can spare right now.

Hubby told me i was never to pay for a porn site. I don't know if this would be considered porn or not. I would hate to have to leave too.

There is a world of difference between asking for voluntary contributions and taking away services from non-paying users--kinda like the difference between public television and Direct TV. Think about it: they don't even distinguish between paying and non-paying users on here. I'm glad to contribute to a site that is available to any adult for free.

You can't charge for a blog site today. There's too much free competition, from Yahoo, Google, etc.

Ads, maybe.

When I first joined this site, I was immediately impressed, both with the quality of service from the site itself, and the quality of people that I was meeting on the message boards. About the time that I was beginning to feel as if this were a community, and that I was becoming a part of that community, a call went out for volunteers to help keep the site running. I happily signed up, and while the work is tedious, I spend a fair number of hours (when possible) doing my part to help mantain the community that I have grown to be fond of. If I had money, right now, I'd plunk down a payment. As it is, I'm eating ramen and getting ready to go on the road, so I'm in no condition to contribute anything. I may still pull twenty bucks out of my ass and forego coffee for a few weeks, just to provide what support I can.

This is a community. This is my community. I don't bitch about having to pay taxes. I bitch about my taxes going to fund things that I do not approve of. As long as I can pitch in, I will.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one in that type of financial position. I'm pitchin' in what I can but it ain't gonna be much either. Hopefully it will make a difference. I don't think I could afford a regular membership fee and it would stink to have to leave now that I'm trying to be more involved.
