I remember her famous line from the '88 Democrat Convention, "Poor George, (Bush the 1st) he was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

It was a dirty Republican conspiracy..

How old was she?  Was it natural causes?

I met her once, at a Democratic convention. She was a pistol.

LOL use of the word "Pistol" kinda bad choice of words since she was notoriously anti gun, even with her attempts to show otherwise.

Lived under her rule in TX as governor; but I will give her one thing at least she saved TX from living under Clayton Williams.

She was a humorous politician and a character for sure.

I was never governed by her, but she was as funny as hell -- a great personality in politics, where there's certainly a shortage of personality.

AUSTIN, Texas - Former Gov. Ann Richards, the witty and flamboyant Democrat who went from homemaker to national political celebrity, died Wednesday night after a battle with cancer, a family spokeswoman said. She was 73.

Her family said as governor she was most proud of two actions that probably cost her re-election. She vetoed legislation that would allow people to carry concealed handguns, automatic weapons and so-called "cop-killer bullets."

She also vetoed a bill that critics said would have allowed the destruction of the Edwards Aquifer, a major underground water system that now serves 1.7 million in people in south central Texas, including the city of San Antonio.

She grabbed the national spotlight with her keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention when she was the Texas state treasurer. Richards won cheers from delegates when she reminded them that Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, "only backwards and in high heels."

Asked once what she might have done differently had she known she was going to be a one-term governor, Richards grinned.

"Oh, I would probably have raised more hell."

Good night, Governor Ann. We love you here.

Not very smart of her to do away with Second Amendment Rights!
Can you imagine someone wanting to cancel your First Amendment Rights?

Can't we shitcan the partisan stuff in threads like these? It's like going to someone's funeral and bitching about your cousin Joe; leave that for another place.

She spoke at my wife's commencement at SMITH college. It startled me that Bush took the TX governorship from her, but with Karl Rove as his operative, BUSH was/is pretty good at winning political battles.

I was surprised as well that she lost; she didn't help her cause when she referred to Bush as "some jerk" during the campaign. It may have played well with the die-hard Democrats, but that kind of talk surely pushed some undecideds out of her corner.

Misstep or not, she was a terrific woman, and as of now, the last great Texas Democrat.
