Status: offline 		hi- cingular which bought out att- sent me a letter- they are phazing out my old service. the new contract would be abour 2x the cost.

i been looking at sprint which merged with nextel.

if one is too new to teck toys- it costs more- hit it right ride the wave.

ild like to hear thoughts on cell service. add it up, cable, satlielite, DSL, landline, and cell, and i try to keep cost at $200 a month.

does anyone know about the FTA satlite service???

i want to be current with out spending my blood pressure pill money on it....

thoughts? advice ?

Status: offline 		I have had Sprint for a long time.  It's expensive.. but good.   I look for the cancellation penalty.  If you cancel Sprint/Nextel before your contract - they charge you $200.

If I were to change, I think I'd try Verizon only because I like their phones.  However, I just upgraded my cell phone with Sprint, and they have the LG line.  The phone was very reasonable and serves me well.  ( I hardly have to flogg it. )

All the service will hold you hostage with the penalty for early termination of contract.

Status: offline 		I have Sprint fair and flexible, and it has been costing me way too much because my Daddy has another provider and we clear my minutes within a couple of days easy

If you know a lot of people on Sprint, then I would go that direction.. if not I would probably look into another provider

Status: offline 		I'm a t-mobile fan.  I don't have a landline, cell is my only phone contact.  I don't use it for web stuff or conference calls, so I can't give much insight to techno geek capabilities.  But, I find their basic contracts are great- no long distance, tons of daytime minutes, unlimited weekend and nights, and their phones are reliable.  I've had mine for over 3 years now. 

I've also had problems and their customer service is very friendly and reliable, quick to respond.  When my screen blew on my first phone, they sent me a new one in two days, all I had to do was change out the sim card, pop the old phone in the box and slap on the shipping address back to them (which they paid for).

But research and get quotes and find the services that work best for you.

Status: offline 		I prefer Verizon and they have the best coverage and best customer service (or so JD Power sez). 

Most charge a penalty for early-cancellation; Verizon charges $175...but with free long distance, coverage from coast to coast, no minutes for calls to other Verizon Wireless users and no roaming ever..................why cancel?  LOL

Oh... most of the service providers offer similar phones; the Razr, LGs, etc.  Few have special ones...like the LG Chocolate (which is black, not chocolate-colored!  Go figure...)

Can't remember if it was the ''Economist'' or ''US News and World Reports'' that I read { few weeks ago} a most excellent article that surrounds the whole industry.

It tells us to ''beware'', and that the larger players in the game have learned many lessons after watching the pretroleum industry. It specifically points to the down sizing of competition through mergers and aquisitions, in which case folks like AT&T and Sprint seek to reduce the size of the playing field. This is ultimately bad news for those of us who are heavily dependent on our cell phones.

Three cell phones, 2000 minutes a month, call waiting, voice mail, extended insurance (that means that if one of the phones breaks we take it to a sprint store and they replace it, no sending it in to be repaired and only a $10 deductible), road side service, and 7 to 7 unlimited minutes and our bill is around $200 a month. I tried Cingular and hated it. That's why I switched to Sprint and am a very loyal customer. Never had any trouble with it and love the coverage.

Status: offline 		Do you guys really get raped for cell service that bad?  Man, our service up here is peanuts.  We get a phenomenal family plan from Bell for only $65 CAD a month with his and her phones (we chose the Samsungs), 350 free minutes a month, free phone to phone calling, free home calling and I can not even remember what else that comes with it.

You guys sound like you are getting ripped.

Status: offline 		I pay $85/month for two cell phones on Verizon (that includes the free evenings after 9pm and free weekends).  I never have problem with coverage, unless I am way out in the sticks and that's only happened a few times.  I like Verizon because I can talk to other Verizon cell phones for free.  It may be worth your while to find out who's providing cellular service to the people you call the most on cell phones.

Status: offline 		We have Verizon family plan--nation wide long distance, 2 phones and lots of minutes for $59/mo., it's $74 with all the taxes. We've never gone over our minutes and are happy with it.

Status: offline 		I don't think anyone here can help you at all.  We all live in different area's of the country.  What works for you will not work for me.  Unfortunately I say this from experience.
I have cingular here in California and it works decent.  About as decent as any of the other major players.  I've had them all at one time or another.
Yet, when I travel out of state and even though I roam my service is crap.
I have a friend who has Sprint...in his hometown it is crap yet he signed the contract and cannot get out just yet.

So, what is one to do?  Attempt to research your own area.  Which service works best for you.

Something that I am currently looking into is...different areas of the country perhaps using different chips.
Not quite sure if they do.  Though my local cingular rep told me you can only buy certain phones in certain states. Yet they had no explanation of why that is.
Anyone know?

Status: offline 		Personally I like Alltell. More towers than sprint, and verizon combined, (in south florida,) about $68 a month for 750 anytime min, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited national long distance, plus a $5 upgrade of 750 text/multimedia messages, and an additional $2.99 a month for Roadside assistance (which is very handy when in another vehicle besides your own.)

Status: offline 		Cingular here for many years. Family plan 2 phones- unlimted nights and weekends. Free long distance- voice mail- call waiting- 500 free anytime rollover minutes ( which have now grown to over 6,000 minutes LOL ) $ 49.99 a month

Status: offline 		I'm with Katylied and proudsub........have had Verizon since 1998 (cannot even remember who it was then, changed their name so many times) but they have treated me well and the plan works for my usage. In addition its the company that has the best coverage in the areas I travel. I don't need all the whistles and bells, its a PHONE for PHONE CALLS.....

I do still have a land line at home, if I didn't I would not have internet service. I do not usually have it hooked up to a phone and do not have long distance service on it.

Status: offline 		I've heard horror stories about every carrier except Alltel, but I've never been their customer. Years ago Verizon screwed me over.

I don't really need a lot of minutes, so I use TracFone, a prepaid service. The one really good thing about TracFone is that they have contracts with a lot of different wireless providers. That gives them greater coverage than other companies. Also, no activation fees or contracts!

Status: offline 		Fortunately I have been with Verizon so long I don't have to worry about contracts or anything like that. Whatever activation fee I paid was so long ago it doesn't matter

Status: offline 		After having dealt with Verizon, sprint, nextel, and AT&T->Cingular, I'd say Cingualr is your best choice.
 
1] coverage is as good or better than Verizon- this may vary in your area, but it's overall true for the eastcoast and the mid/south west coast
 
2] Best customer service hands down.I go through 2-5 phones a year, and haven't  been without a phone for more than one bussines day.
 
3] GSM technology- the best Celluar Mode
 
4] the best phones. Get a V3Razr -my favorite phone since the startac

I've been with cingular for over 9 years.  Loved it... UNTIL I moved to Michigan.  For the first 3 months I was here I had to literally get into my car and DRIVE 20+ miles to get a signal. Tried to cancel the contract due to no service in my area and they quoted me almost $800 to cancel my 3 lines!!  After they merged with AT&T I finally had a signal at home but for some reason and much  to their dismay all calls I make are considered roaming.  Guess that will teach them to offer nation wide no roaming(charges) and refuse to let me cancel the service.  Every call I make costs THEM...hahahahahahahaha.  Sorry, but after almost 2 years of fighting with them, I am absolutely enjoying costing  them $$$ because my signal gets picked up by some corn farmers tower.  LOL.  I can't get my phone number changed to a "local" number so every call I make/receive gets routed to Florida first.  Talk about dropped calls. 

I have 3 more months before my final contract with them is up.  How many calls can I make...can I bankrupt them with "roaming" charges before then?????  I'm sure as heck trying!!  But after I say my fond farewell to them....I'm pretty stuck because hickville just doesn't appear on anyones coverage map.

Me? I use Cingular, I have 4 phones , 1 with unlimited data & 200 messages per month, 1100 minutes per month, and rollover for about $131/mo. I have no complaints.

Granted I live down south where Cingular has been for years so ymmv.

Status: offline 		Cingular is owned jointly by SBC (which is now AT&T) and Bell South. AT&T is in the process of buying Bell South and it should be completed in the 4th quarter of this year. Cingular wil then be called AT&T wireless.
