CrappyDom -> Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 6:43:46 AM)

I don't like Religion in general and I find much to dislike in the radical ends of it.  However, considering the poor bastards aren't allowed to choose their own governments and when we do we overthrow each and every one and that we support every dictator over there, I can't exactly blame them for being a bit pissy about it.

What I want to point out is a charming little pamphlet I got recently, actually a couple of them.  They are little books the US military published in WWII on how to get along in various countries.  I picked up one about Syria and Iraq.
  • They discuss how to tell the difference between Christian and Muslim villiges.   Imagine that, they used to have Christians living among them, shocking isn't it?  I wonder what changed?
  • They discuss how crucial it is to not refuse the hospitality of the Muslims.  WHAT?  I thought they were murderous savages who would kill Christians on sight?
  • They discuss how crucial it is to be respectful and win their hearts and minds.

They go on but they clearly paint a picture of a rather pleasant if backward place, one where Christians are living in peace with Muslims, one where foreign infidels are not only not killed but their biggest concern is gracefully accepting hospitality from people who don't have much to give.

So, these were not bloodthirsty savages who had long ago purged their lands of all infidels and were actually quite civilized, don't forget, we Europeans learned how to bath from the Arabs...

KenDckey -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 6:53:23 AM)

rofl   Yeah   The Army in WWII put out lots of BS.   But this time I agree.   I have lived in the Arab world.   I have enjoyed their hospitality.   Unfortunately, it is often the extreme christians that most often swing the first time.  I have a thought.   Why don't we ship all the extremists (Christians, Bud\ahists, Moslems, Jews, Wicca, women's rights activists, civil right activists, ACLU, Lawyers, Politicians, etc) to the middle of the desert someplace, give each one a rifle with 1000 rounds of ammo each and tell them to reslove their problems.  Last man/woman standing wins.  Then s/he gets to form thier own little country on some deserted atol someplace.

Level -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 7:01:44 AM)

I've never been to the middle east, but I have heard and read that they are gracious and polite...... but, draw an offensive cartoon, and some of them do a Bill Bixby, and..... change. [8|] Of course, it's not that easily explained, lots goes into the Islamic rage we see, including bad behaviour on all sides, jealousy and despair, being goaded by violent morons like Bin Laden, so on.

LadyMorgynn -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 7:12:30 AM)

I lived for a year in Egypt as an exchange student at the American University in Cairo, and a year in Riyadh working under contract at a hospital.  I found the people to be MOST friendly, and possibly the most hospitable people on the face of this earth.  Yes, even in Riyadh, where I had more girlfriends than I could count, and it was too bad I had to work <laugh> because they always wanted me to come with them, we did all kinds of things... picnics, parties, dinners out at restaurants, shopping trips to the malls and souqs, ordering delivery from Pizza Hut, amusement parks, the zoo... all with their drivers trailing along behind to carry our packages when shopping, and maids to serve us tea and coffee and so forth on our picnics.  Great fun!  In Egypt people are much more poor of course and no one has servants, but I was welcomed into many homes by chance-met acquaintances.  I have never felt so accepted anywhere in my life.  Of course, it didn't hurt that I was learning Arabic; they are very well aware how difficult a language it is for westerns to learn, and are very appreciative of the slightest effort!

oh, dear, now I feel homesick for Cairo, just talking about it... <sigh>

I will echo your words.   I spent 30 months in the Port of Massawa, Eritreia.  The population of 30,000 (about 95%  of them moslems) was very warm and hospitable.

"God   You are no fun at all  LOL"

...i've been saying that since i was chucked out of sunday school for arguing........

i s'pose religious extremists are a bit like nuclear waste......an inevitable waste product of a controversial process that some claim as necessary while others disagree. Problem is, where do you put it?

WyrdRich -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 8:41:49 AM)

At one time, I rented a room in a house owned by a refugee from Afghanistan.  We had some interesting conversations in the months before he went off to be a translator for Special Forces.

We tried discussing religion a few times, but it always broke down quickly because he insisted that humans had submit to God rather than coming to God freely.

And we've all heard that "Allah Ahkbar" means 'God is great?'  He found that offensive and said it means 'God is one.'

Yes, as a matter of fact, most male Doms do resemble that remark.  Luckily, there's no resentment, because that may delay the plan.

LadyMorgynn -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 9:44:17 AM)

Allahu Akbar does indeed mean God is great.  Possibly your friend did not speak Arabic.  Not sure where he picked up that idea but "akbar" is from the root kabar, which is large or great.  Equational sentences in Arabic leave out the present tense verb "to be"; therefore Allah + u (connector small vowel) + akbar = Allah is Great or possibly Greatest since it is in relationship to Allah, over whom there is none more great, obviously.  Another example of an equational sentence would be "hiyya jamilla" stating "she (hiyya) is pretty (jamilla)"

"Allahu Ahad" means "God is One" and is the opening of the 112th Surah: Kulhu Allahu Ahad.  (Say: Allah is One)

The caps are ours of course; there is no capitalization in the Arabic language.

ya habiibi benji, inta katkuut wa afriit!

LOL!

and actually, no, I don't know precisely what that means, LOL!  my friends always teased my daughter:  "Ya katkuuta! Ya afriita!"  I gather katkuuta may be cute or silly, and afriita is a mischievous spirit, lesser than the Jinn I think, but could possibly be a mischievous Jinn? any Islamic scholars out there? :)

WyrdRich -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 9:55:23 AM)

His first language was Pashtoun (sp?) and it could well reflect regional differences or a different sect.  It was a philosophical issue for him, perhaps along the lines of how a Baptist will disagree with a Charismatic.

LadyMorgynn -> RE: Bullshit about Muslims (9/16/2006 10:02:14 AM)

His understanding of Arabic aside, that's probably perfect true that it's due to regional differences.  Many non Arabic Muslims, especially in isolated third world communities, know only what their translations or their umma (religious community) tell them a phrase may mean, and they can often even recite the Arabic without knowing the precise meaning.
