I thought the guidelines say that if you can't make a word with the last two letters you use the last 3, 4, 5 etc until you can get a word. In this case (shift) it would probably have to have gone back to the whole word and added to it making something like shifty for example, from which 'ty' could then have been carried on from.
But as we have started off with a completely new word now i guess we'll carry on with that....
