As a person who deals with SS (no, not the nazi kind) for a living i can reveal that the increase really was a way for people to afford the Part D perscription drug benefits unless they were eligible for extra help according to SS guidelines.  The poorest of the poor did get a spendable increase while those at 150+ percent of Federal poverty guidelines about broke even from previous years or at best offset the actual cost of living by a buck or two.  i can't say for certain but SS increases have kept up with the Medicare Part B premium increases so that only those who are dually-eligible (Medicare + Medicaid) are seeing any relief at all.  i wish it were different.

Part B. Cyclon B, Social Security, National Socalism.... I'm sensing a pattern here. Oh gawd, i've become a conspiracy theorist! So JFK really was killed by a magic bullet supplied by aliens from area 51 in order to hide the location of the ark of the Covenant and allow the telepathic space clams to work with the CIA using the Haarp array to mentally direct the terrorists of 9-11. It all makes perfect sense now! Elvis died for our sins!

Ummm, too much caffeine this morning. Sorry 'bout that.

Military retirees like me also get their pay increases based upon COLA.  Normally whatever SS gets we got.  This year not all will get the 4.1%

Just another example of eroding benefits
