"The directors of "Jesus Camp," a buzz-generating documentary about evangelical Christian children training to be soldiers for God, proclaim no agenda other than to start a conversation about belief, politics and the culture wars.

Their movie follows three Missouri kids who speak in tongues, pray for judges to outlaw abortion and lay hands on a cardboard cutout of President Bush."

Looks like the kind of training that the extremist Muslims would put their children through. Rather scarey in my opinion.

The parents should be arrested for something close to child abuse.

i can not tell you how sad and how terrified i am that we are currently living in a world in which  a five year old would have the capability to express (let alone internalize) that he was just "missing something in his life". It absolutely terrrifies me that this could actually be a reality, and not just some half baked bullshit!! Sadly, it occurs to me that we've probably just witnessed the beginning of the creation of the next cult....

WHAT!!!   You mean parents are actually allowed to decide what sort of values will be taught to their children at a summer camp???  In America???  I'm shocked and outraged.  They should be required to hug the trees and worship Mother Earth and be taught about appropriate flute lube.  It's that damn First Amendment again.

Well, you might want your children to have their mouths taped up by religious zealots, I personally would rather they ate ice cream and played ball in the garden. A child's mind is no place to be playing politics and religion.

I went to Jesus (church) camp as a teen.  We spent a lot of time flirting with boys.  It was fun.

I went to a Cathoilc high school and those public high school kids had nothing on us when it came to partying and messing around.  Actually, in many ways we had less rules and more freedoms that the public school kids but those Nuns and Priests came down much harder on us when we were caught.  This only forced us to be more creative in getting away with shit.  Evolution at work.

As for Jesus Camp, I despise any ideology (because they are inflexable in a universe governed by change), especially ones that feel the need to indoctornate.  But WyrdRich has a point.  Freedom of thought must apply to everyone, especially for those we disagree with.  I agree with EnglishDomNW that a childs mind is no place to play with politics and religion but who decideds what constitues politics and religion?  For many religious people their religion isn't a religion -- it is reality.  If you accept the notion that it's okay to deny freedom to some then you ackowledge that it is okay to deny freedom and why shouldn't your freedoms (we are all offensive to somebody) be included?  We reap what we sow.  I may not like the idea of turning five year olds into Holy Warriors but as long as their beliefs don't translate into action that causes others physical harm then I believe we must tolerate it, for our own freedom.

I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD but I probably will watch it.  A)  I'd like to see for myself.  B) it sounds like it might be a fascinating study of human psychology.  When those kids fall down on the ground in their moments of rapture, do they truly believe (and belief can have strange effects on people), or are they just performing for the adults?  Doing what is expected of them?  Or perhaps, some of them being so young, is it just a game to them?  No different that doing the "London Bridge is Falling Down" song and dance in nursery school.

I always sucked at "London Bridge is Falling Down."

I am all for the Jesus camps, one of the myths that gets passed around by the kids is that anal sex isn't "sex" and so it isn't a sin.  Nothing as twisted and perverted as little christian girls slurping up cum after you came in their ass.

Thank god for religion, we wouldn't be anywhere near as perverted without it.

I agree with you about it being a cult because that's exactly what it is, though it thrives under the guise of a *religion*. We have extremists in this country who are just as crazed and dangerous as anywhere and their numbers are growing.
What is the appeal? I have NO idea and why any intelligent freedom loving woman would want to fall in with a bunch of nuts it beyond me. And to get their children involved? I can only believe that they've been brain washed or just aren't that intelligent to begin with.
Next they will be strapping bombs onto them and sending them into abortion clinics to "save the babies".

Yeah, well, what do you expect from people that want mythology taught as science in public schools? I was a little shocked at their stance on abortion though. Did they neglect to read Psalm 137? Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock.

Yes I find these people disturbing and their religion is as scary as any terrorist training camp minus the weapons, but you cannot stop people from being scary unless they take some sort of action and they should be free to worship anyway they like. As long as they obey laws I really can't say much about their scary ways.

I am completely and totally for the rights of parents to instill any sort of backwards belief system they want to give their children. We can't take away someone's right to instill values into their offspring, even if we do not agree with them. If someone wants to teach their kids that the earth is flat and only 6000 years old, they should have that right.

If we want to teach our kids to be separatists, haters of Islam, or whatever that is a parental right I suppose

Perhaps I can't explain this, but I'll try.

Don't ever hate. It saps your life energy, it makes you sad, depressed and in some cases lonely. If you are prefect, please realize that you got to be perfect by having perfect DNA and the perfect Parent(s). You must realize that NOT ALL OF US HAD YOUR ADVANTAGES IN LIFE.

The Jesus motherfuckers were the only thing I was REALLY scared of when I was a kid. I do NOT surrender, I DO NOT SUBMIT. I was taught not to take shit from anyone, not even my Mother. I live with that.

If my Parents ever sent me to a religious camp, I would be missing, and I hope Dad would be pround. Fuck all that bullshit, I can't stand bullshit. It's a bunch of shit. Period.

Jesus' teachings were right, but so were the Muslims'. If you don't come and take their land they generally won't fuck with you, and for some reason the US government can't seem to understand that. They are not coming here for a lecture on the subject, so I can only assume we will have more of the same.

What is hopeful is that they have made some serious errors in logistics, and it will be their downfall. We should be happy.

T0

Abortion with rocks is allowed. Not with drugs or surgical equipment, though. I'm not sure whether Pope Hitleryouth XXXVIII has ruled on coat hangers, but it's probably a bad idea no matter where he comes down.
