What is a good size to begin with? For basic positions and simple knots on fresh nubile newbie skin? I am definately going with rainbowrope..because I MUST have their hot pink! But I'm hesitant to click that "add to cart" button with so many choices.....solid braid (which I assume is round?) flat, 1/4 ,5/16, eep! help!?!

Good morning.
"solid braid" is round, but braided instead of simply twisted strands. Personal opinion: I prefer it for the more solid feel and minimal stretch - but it's still second choice to hemp.

If this is your first purchase, can't really go wrong with either 5/16" or 3/8". Regardless of where your eventual skills take you, this size will always be handy (with the exception of suspension work). Personal experience/opinion again, the rope I use most often for simple bondage is 5/16" diameter.

While you're at Rainbow, do yourself a favor and add a piece of hand-conditioned natural hemp to your shopping cart. [;)]

1/4 inch is my personal average. But I also use a lot of 3/8 for more large scale work like rope dresses and such.

As far as length goes, that depends a LOT on who you will be tying. A guy who is 6'4" and built like a linebacker is going to need a difrent length of rope to bind than the 5'0" waifs that you see in online suspention photos.

A rule of thumb I use is to measure the person in 3-D. Take therir height, their arm span, and their pants size, and add these number up. This shopuld be a number between 12 feet and 18 feet. This will be your basic "short" length for stuff like single limb ties. Now double that length. This will be your basic "medium" length for most general purpose ties like hogties and rope bras. Now double that length. This will be your basic "long" length for rope ressses or other body harnesses.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up getting a 15' 1/4 inch and cut to 12' and 3'
It is for tying me..I'm 5'0 125lbs, so I think I did good on length! (Sad, huh? This poor subbie must buy her own rope!)
Umm... 1 more question for those who have dealt with rainbowrope..Do they ship in plain wrapping? I accidently mixed up my billing and shipping addresses and its being sent to my Mom's house! aaaa!! "Umm yeah, Mom...I just thought It would be cool to tie my canoe to the car with pretty pink rope...."

I don't know how the rope of rainbow will be but a nice thing to do is to put your rope in the washing machine. They come out softer.

I generally pull hemp rope....and I prefer 6mm diameter.  There are exceptions to this: suspensions or large bodies, 8mm, and intricate small bondage (fingers, heads, cocks) with 4mm or smaller hemp cord.

if you are planning to wash your hemp rope to further condition and soften it in the washing machine you should consider coiling it and placing it the bag you would normally use for washing your delicates.  it will keep the rope from fraying or being damaged by the agitation of the washer.

Rainbow rope comes in a plain box.   No one would ever know.   5/16 is a good size for rope bondage.  I  also find that 25-30 ft lengths are good to work with.  They also have some great parachute cording for cock and tit bondage. [:D]

Properly finished hemp should BE soft already, and it will continue to soften the more it's used and exposed to body oils.  The only reasons you should be wetting it is to decontaminate it if it becomes soiled.  There's far more that needs to be done to hemp (other than tossing it in the washer) to take good care of it.  Hemp should be being oiled occasionally, especially after being exposed to water/soaps.

Can I wash my rope?Yes, place the rope in an old pillow case. Wash ropes separately in your washing machine on gentle cycle using color-safe bleach - use care, as colors may bleed. Hang rope in loose coils to dry (4 days). Once dry, re-oil with a small quantity of Baku or mink oil and let dry for two more days before use.

The wider or large diameter ropes do not dig into the skin as deep as thin ropes. They also allow the spreading to "the load" (pressure) over a larger area, that contributes to longer and more comfortable bondage. Recommend 3/8ths as a good starter size.

MsEmma, phew! thanks for the info on the plain wrapping..I am extrememly relieved! I got the tracking number for the package and have been stakling usps.com everyday so I could get to the mail before she did! Now i can relax..

MizzMinx -- it's a shame that you have to use your ropes on yourself... there's so much more that can be done when someone else does the work.

I'm with MsPandora... 8mm hemp rope is the rope of choice. As for conditioning it -- I have to say, that since my sub's safey is foremost, I'll only use ropes I've personally conditioned. That way I know how it feels... it's strengths...etc. Conditioning techniques are easy to find online... just google it.
Besides, the feel, the smell, the spirit of the hemp rope makes the whole even much more sensual. It adds to all of the senses.
