No, I don't think we need a draft, although it would be a good idea for social equality. As the gap between rich & poor widens the military will be seen by more & more in the lower economic strata as a chance to get away from impovrishment. As minorities do more of the fighting & dying the more & more palitable it will become to the majority.

There is already the feeling that those in the military are there to escape from impovrishment.

As to the gap, go to any store outside a military installation.  The prices are higher so they can gouge the GIs of their pay.  that way they can keep the GI's impoverished.

I have a suggestion. For all the illegal immigrants in this country if they truly wish to stay and be Americans they most certainly can prove their loyalty by joining the US military and recieve their greencard when they have fulfilled their time however long that maybe.

~Lashra

I don't have a problem with that.   I have known a lot of soldiers that were foreign nationals.   They were motivated so they could get their citizenship.   The biggest falacy with the plan as I see it is that Foreign Nationals Legal or NOT cannot get a security clearance.   Some kind of legal thingy.

This thread has many segments.  Maybe you can come up with more.

1 - should the draft be reinstated?  Why not, especially when so many want to bear arms... give them a M-16, make them shave and bathe, and of course quit smoking dope.

2 - Assuming it is reinstated should women be drafted?  Why not, especially when so many are equal or superior to mere men.  A blowed off head is quite genderless.

3 - Assuming it is renstated should men only be drafted?  No, see #2 above.

4 - Assuming it is reinstated which party do you think reinstated it?  It is not a party need, defense is a national need.

5 - Assuming it is reinstated what age groups should be drafted?  Whatever age groups are needed to defend the country.  Why should anybody get a free ride?

6 - Assuming it is reinstated should rich people also be slaughtered in uniform, or are they exempt?

7 -  Assuming it is reinstated should college students be exempted?

8 - Assuming it is reinstated should religion be allowed as a cop-out (those "free" conscientious objectors), or should religion be allowed to exempt one from the needs of their proud nation?

9 - Assuming it is reinstated should gays, lesbians and CD/TS/TV's be exempted from serving the needs of their country?

10 - Assuming it is reinstated should US citizens living on public assistance be included?

11 - Assuming it is reinstated should homeless US citizens be included?

12 - Assuming it is reinstated should people who have filed bankruptsy be included?

13 - Assuming it is reinstated should non-violent offenders (drug dealers, etc) be included?

14 - Assuming it is reinstated should preachers and religious polygamists be included?

15 - Assuming it is reinstated should any nationality of US citizen be exempted?

16 - Assuming it is reinstated should "draftees" be given access to WMD's, or just M-16's?

17 - Assuming it is reinstated should draft-dodgers' US citizenship be permanently revoked?

lots of questions.   Oh on Question 16 change it to M4 Carbines   they are phasing out the M16   is basically the same weapon but with some modifications.

On question 6, I was stationed with a Guy at Fort Hood that was a millionaire.   He was a young specialist (below a sargeant).  He drove his rolls royce and lived in the barracks just like all the otherr guys.  He paid for at least one unit party a month.   Company Commander hated him because of his wealth.  When asked why he had volunteered for the Army, he said it was his patriotic duty.

1 - should the draft be reinstated?
Hell No!

quote:

2 - Assuming it is reinstated should women be drafted?
No

quote:

3 - Assuming it is renstated should men only be drafted?
Yes, but back to question one, no drafting!  Make it a worthwhile job that pays well like police work with good retirement benefits, and people will voluntarily sign up.

quote:

4 - Assuming it is reinstated which party do you think reinstated it?
Who cares?  What should be important is national assessment of and voting for the need, and deciding that way.  The only reason we are considering reinstating in the first place is because we are needlessly squandering human lives/natural resources in places we've no right to be, and we aren't wanted.

5 - Assuming it is reinstated what age groups should be drafted?
Whatever age group includes the person reinstating it, and starting wars.   Anytime a man is willing to put his life/money where his mouth is, I'll believe his honorability.     M

meatcleaver -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/20/2006 12:09:37 AM)

This question has been raised a couple of times in Britain in my lifetime and the generals were against it because unless the country is in real danger of being invaded you end up with a boy scout movement.

My grandfather fought in WWI, lost a son and had one seriously wounded in WWII and my father served too, told his youngest son when he was called up for national service in 1949, just remember, your real enemy is in London.

The French only got rid of national service a couple of years ago and did so because they had an army so big they didn't know what to do with it, most were just wearing out boots doing drill. The Dutch have national service and their army has a union and has actually been on strike before today. One of the reasons the Germans are reluctant to send troops around the world, apart from their history, is because they have a largely nationa service army that is politically aware. The fact is when you have national service, the more middleclass parents usually present a fiercesome opposition to politicians with fantasies of military adventures.

Hmm. Come to think of it. UtopianRanger has a point. National Service might cause a mini revolution. I'm wondering if Britain would have joined in the Iraq debacle if Britain had the draught. Maybe the US with its strong brand of patriotism might be different but I doubt it. I've a feeling patriotism doesn't seem a good idea when you needlessly have guns being pointed in your face and bombs thrown at you.

Kedicat -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/20/2006 12:22:38 AM)

1. No
2. Yes
3. No
4. The one that messed up so bad that they can't clean it up without more dead bodies.
5. The same proportion of ages that will be killed by them. Lots of young kids, seniors. Some hospital patients.

And no exemptions from the draft, if it happens. All those who vote for a draft in congress, senate, citizens etc are automatically first on the list, along with their children.
