Dtes, that's exactly what I'm doing.
I think that the govt. should step up Nursing Training in the U.S.
Maybe give grants to open more schools.
If you go by the law of supply and demand Nurses (should) be making more than Lawyers.
If the govt. started importing Lawyers into the country like they do Nurses there'd be a big squawk from the Bar Associations.
There's such an over supply of Lawyers now, go into your Yellow pages and count the number of pages of "Attorneys" then go to oh...."Plumbers."
The disparity is absolutely ENOURMOUS!
They need to CLOSE Law Schools and use them for Nursing schools!

I think I read somewhere that the US has 33 times the number of lawyers relevent to the size of the population compared with most developed countries. Perhaps issue with nurses is that whist many of them carry out very technical tasks some / much of the work is not technical.

Concerns me that the costs in training etc and the level of debt that students carry through to their future lives governs what they train for. In the UK they recently got rid of subsidised university education, net result is people focussing more on what the money making potential of their degree rather and its "real value" is and rich mummy & daddy being more improtant than ability.

being able to train free and with affordable subsidised living would allow greater flexibility of work force and people that develope interest in later life to then pursue them for benefit of themselves and others. MArket forces based on money alone do not allow this to happen for things such as teaching, nusing etc where the population will not pay the money in taxes to make these "well paid" (comparatively) sections of society.

Ok Popye, I'll bite.  Up here in Mass and sometimes I feel if I have to shovel one more bit of snow, I'll scream.  Thing is, though, I've been an RN for 25 years, work in critical care and am at the top of my pay scale.  With a little overtime here and there I can pull in 3 figures.  So, specifically, what is the pay down there for someone with my experience?

Takethis, I know nothing about the pay scales here. I suppose you could check them somehow.

And with this world-wide, undisputable, healthcare crippling nursing shortage, the University of British Columbia (really well respected nursing faculty) decides they will no longer accept straight-out-of-high-school applicants.... No no... Now, for UBC, you either already have to have a bachelors in Arts or Science.. Or you must be at least 2 full years into one of those bachelor degrees. Am I the only person who thinks thats just useless??

And.. Umm damn I've forgotten the poster, but whoever asked about going into it for money or passion her you go.
I originally too my EMR (EMT-B in the states) because my parents wouldnt stop hammering me about getting a certificate. You know, just something to fall back on, looks good on a resume etc. But after the very first class, I was hooked. I'm not sure how to explain it, but emergency medicine feels right to me. One thing I hate about front line, eg paramedic work, is that theres always a chance it will be too late by the time I get there. And everytime I can't do something, it just kills me. A version of sub drop almost. But when I save someone... wow... It doesnt matter if I'm on duty or it was a car accident I happened to drive past. What I mean to say is, whether or not I'm getting paid has no bearing on the rush of "holy shit I just saved someones life!" So if I barely made enough money for my bills, I would still pursue medicine in some form or another.

I'm an Independant voter and I like The Constitution Party.
I hate Democrats and Republicans equally.

Canadian nurse here..... cant imagine the situation in the US is much different. We do have a shortage of all types of health care workers. Why? It's not the money... its the job itself. It aint what it used to be. There is no satisfaction in that type of service anymore... sigh.

Helping people hands down. I love what I do... I'm a caretaker.
I'm a surgical technician and have been for 16 yrs.
I work with traveling nursing companies. There's a huge shortage of nurses...even techs for that matter...has been for years.
It's called burn out for a lot of them. Stress,, stress stress and long hrs...sometimes long crazy demanding hours.
I've been traveling for 10 yrs..never seems to be enough of us (speaking for the medical field) to go around.

Damned if I can figure it out but I like to try and understand why other people see the world differently to me. I often disagree with the opinions you post because they are very US centric and appear at times to be "bugger everybody else" but on this issue we seem to be like minded. I'm still trying to figure out the US political situation but listening to the radio and all the slagging off of candidates for the up comming US electiosn for congress / senate / govenor / sheriff / attournet general / trafic warden / miss dairy queen certainly puzzls me.......

I'm similar in that I dislike and disagree with most politicians.....but have some respect for a few from both the right and the left of British Politics - don't know enough about US politicians - except BUSH and CHENEY !!!! who are tw*~ts

Dtes, lol, of course I'm "U.S.Centric", I live in the U.S.!
And aside from a few European countries and the U.S. no, I really don't care what happens in foreign countries! lol
As I've said before in other threads I'm *NOT* a "globalist."
I don't believe in "foreign aid", the "U.N.", Nato, and I'd like to cut the U.S. State Dept by 75%.
