OK  If they get their way with the car companies then they should then attack people and animals and plants.   They all produce green house gasses.   H2S (Hydrogen sulfide) is that icky smelling stuff produced from feces and decaying vegitable matter.   It is a major greenhouse gas.   Oh and it smells like rotten eggs.  I think we should sue the people of california for being our ag belt, protecting our trees so that the undergrowth continues to decay instead of being burned up, growing all those grapes, nuts and fruits in the desert (yeah the central valley is technically a desert).  Either that or they should tax H2S producers to beat the Prop 15 clauses.

You are just too bitter for me to respond to, and I have no time for hate filled people. I would suggest you swallow some of your bile instead of spewing it forth, but you might choke on it.

Because you don't like my opinion or a reply does not mean that you have to attack me with slander, label me a hater, and then plot my own death with the very bile in you, projected into me.  I'm a real sweetheart and you are just plain ol' mean... even accused me of being a republican... so vicious!

All in all, Cali could slide into the ocean for all I really care. Just another stupid lawsuit.

It's interesting you'd say something like this and then turn around in the very same post and state this:

Just a bit of a hate projecting hypocrite, huh?

This lawsuit is ridiculous.  All those who complain about gas from autos do not realize that the effects of car cas is but one tiny fraction compared to to airline fuel - huh.  Go figure.  I know - we can try MTBE again, wasn't THAT a success story!!

Speaking of alternative fuels and aviation,  there was a segment on CNN about trials the Air Force is conducting with a B-52 bomber. Of the eight jet engines, six were flown operating on regular JP4 jet fuel, while two were modified to operate on synthetic fuel derived from coal. There was a high pressure compression of the coal, which somehow with an added catalyst created an oil-like substance which was then distilled to produce the synthetic jet fuel.

From what I understood of the report, the results exceeded expectations and now they plan to convert the B-52 test aircraft so that all eight jet engines will operate on the synthetically produced jet fuel.

Not sure whether this was simply an alternative fuel source, or whether it had cleaner emissions when used, as it was preliminary findings of the on-going tests.  At a minimum, the results indicated US coal reserves could reduce or eliminate US military dependence on foreign oil sources.

If successful as a preliminary test, the synthetic process could actually replace oil as a required fuel source in modern motorized societies.  If the process can be adapted to clean burning alternative fuels there may be hope towards slowing down or possibly ending the escalating greenhouse effect of fossil fuels.

When you pull into future gas stations, you might be saying filler' up with Kingsford Match Lite, and throw in some Mesquite chips so I can smell good while I'm going fast.

Every day, one of the ships I unload in the harbor spews the equivalent amount of noxious greenhouse gasses that you get
from something like 10,000 to 100,000 cars.

A significant amount of the cargo streaming into our port is destined for Wal-Mart.

Do the math.

p.s. Has anybody figured out what the subject of this thread actually means?  Near as I can figure, somebody is shooting the heads off of California bean sprouts or baby trees.  This is, of course, just me and I could be wrong.

Over 40,000 people die a year on the roads in America, that is, directly killed, no allowances for the effects of pollution.  I don't know the exact figures for pedal cycle related deaths, but I shouldn't think that many of those are killed by bicycles, even in California.  Hence, I fail to understand why there is a War On Terror (terror is an abstract noun, how ya gonna eliminate that?) rather than a War On Automotion.  But then that's just me, I don't understand a lot of things. Perhaps sueing the motor manufactures is just soft...why not bomb 'em or send in the troops to effect regime change?

Laura (and no, in case you couldn't tell, I'm not serious about the solution, but I am serious about the problem)

lol.  California is THE most anal State in the entire US when it comes to emissions.  Unbelievable.  I wonder what is next?

On a positive note, if there is one, is that prevailing winds are eastbound.

So theoretically, California's flatulence is the air the rest of you breath.

Makes me go all squishy and happy knowing the Governator drives a Hummer.

Yay fossil fuels!

Apparently California has forgot that for scores of years they have received tax revenues on automobile sales, annual automobile registration fees, automobile traffic citations and fines... and that they use automobiles also (ie. police cars, SUV's, motorcycles, 4x4's, etc).

One could make the same argument for cigarettes.

However, GM, Ford et all, require states to build an infrastructure so consumers can use their the products they sell them so it is not as if anyone is freeloading on tax revenue. Railways have to build their own infrastructure so why not car companies? Then there might be an argument against tax but then there still would be the argument about pollution car company products produce.

That will be next on the agenda. Polluter pays is a fine idea because the polluters are inflicting the excrememt of their life style on other people. If people want cheap travel they should buy a bike.

Yeah, it really bugs the shit outta me when I have to buy a new tag every year for my cigarettes.  The automakers being sued by California must have also required Hitler to create the Autobahn as well... surely it had nothing to do with getting from point A to point B quickly or to transport commerce... it was merely an automaker requirement as you say.  That bastard Henry Ford, what nerve!

Railroad companies always build their own locomotives and never straight out buy them, and of course trucking companies who haul freight and commerce always build their own trucks... as do airlines all build their own airplanes.  The problem is far too obvious as you pointed out... those bastards too!

It's fantastic that California decided to shoot themselves in the head first... now it's all good doods, we have a master plan!

The flaw in all this, is that when the car is sued out of existence, one assumes the legislators are going to pull a rabbit out of the hat so people can get around ooooor they can be like Britain, bankrupt the motorist and still make them drive their cars because there isn't an alternative.

Meanwhile I'm so so smug here living in a city with a cheap integrated transport system and my bike, on which I can beat any public or private transport within the city's environs.

Hard to get to Europe on my mountain bike though...  It would have been hard to make my former 80 mile round trip commute to work on bike, too.

I did think those folks in SF who blocked traffic with their bikes to make a point, were just asking to be mauled over though.

I'm all in agreement that California has stupid laws and policies and taxes.  I was adamantly against the MTBE fiasco.  But to those of you who think we should all die...well that's a bit extremist, good lord, can we have more realistic discussions here?

I'm well aware most Americans need a car because of the way their cities are designed and the distances involved which makes the idea of car companies being sued there, intriguing to say the least.

That's inaccurate.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/1605/ggrpt/carbon.html (go down to "transportation sector")

Doesn't it strike people as odd that the government should be putting out information about greenhouse-gas emissions when the same fucking government allegedly doesn't believe in global warming?

Ah the wonders of All or nothing from Bush critics, LOL

Bush has never said utright that he doesn't believe in Global Warming he says that the science is not enough to convince him that man is the largest major component that many of the scientists want to make it out to be.

They will scream about the North Pole glaciers receeding but ignore the thickening of the Icepack at the South Pole.
When asked what part of the warming is attributeable to the fact that the sun is burning hotter, they lude answering the question.
When asked about the urban sprawl effecting the temerature stations for various locations average daily temps they shift to some other area.

I don't say Global Warming isn't happening I do question what part is natural, what part is man influenced and what other causes apply that can be worked on. BTW they also neglect to mention that emmissions are going down down down the rate of decline is slower than it was under Clinton but it has not reversed. And on top of that we have more eletricity available with the same emmissions from many plants that burn fossil fuels in the same region that had the blackouts due to consumption.

Soemtimes even kowing that long term you'll have to reduce taking some short term corrections is nessisary.

Absurd is more like it.  We (collectively, as Americans) sue car companies for polluting;  we sue fast food restaurants for making us fat; we sue gun manufacturers for the acts of violent people, and we sue tobacco companies for making us sick.  It's all absurd.

I am envious of you being able to ride your bike!
