After playing Hunter S. Thompson and Captain Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp has a new completely stoned character on the agenda.  He will be playing Pink Floyd's first creative force, Syd Barrett in a Cameron Crowe film about the band.

I'll be waiting for this one.  Even after he went completely mad, Syd was the inspiration for a lot of the bands best work.

That should be an interesting project, JD has a definite knack for stoner/drunkee roles, a natural. Fear and Loathing was a stellar role and still makes me laugh thinking about it, especially the cigarette holder wagging.  I'd love to be able to get wasted while getting paid for it, or studying the role and aclimating to the character... all in a days work, cheers! That would be cool to see actually.  Johnny Depp is a phenomenal actor in My opinion.

Hmmm
I'm generally a Floyd fan. I doubt I'll see the flick. I only care about the music and the sometimes good lyrics of bands/musicians. Sometimes they do good or incredibaly stupid stand alone things out of their musical realm. But I don't attach those things to the music.
A movie like this would be sort of meaningless to me. Music is like any art. It stands alone. It meets you as a stranger. It is as much you as it is itself. The artist made it, put themselves into it at the moment, then moved on. It is only a minute chance that you, the art and the artist were ever in the same place. The picture on your wall is only the same picture as yesterday, if you are the same person as yesterday.

Syd Barret, as far as I know, never did much else that I, or most people have experienced. I suspect the whole flic will be an investigation of artistic madness. And how to judge the merit of that performance?
