"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that." - George Carlin

-----

For those that think this is unfair or just one set of idiots, I have seen an identical routine done on "The Tonight Show" over the years with strikingly similar results. If you can't answer all of the questions, move to the back of the class.

While knowledge of world affairs may not be the ultimate proof of intelligence "on the ground" I still think that some of you might do well to memorize the general design of this prize winning artifact as you want to be prepared for what life has in store for you:

They have a weekly show here in Canada where the host goes down to the US and makes fun of them as well..  Some of it was admittedly really funny.

Those look like your fellow Californians as opposed to Americans.  [:D]

We have a comedy show up here that used to have segment called " Talking to Americans " It was of course often just played for laughs. But it was too often disturbing.

I certainly won't go so far as to say the average Canadian would always do better at such on the spot Q&A sessions. But on average it has been shown that US citizens are often behind a lot of other countries in certain general knowledge.
I don't think it has anything at all to do with the American IQ. It is the place they occupy and are completely comfortable to occupy as top dog in so many aspects. To think and be constantly told you are number one in most things, leaves little incentive to care to know about the so called lesser things.

And I'd also like to see all the raw footage. Of course the right answers would be of little humour or superiority value, so were edited out. It is however an example of a quite well proven lapse in one area of US society.

There's another TV show where the people being asked the questions are just a setup for 2 television contestants who are being gauged for their ability to assess the interviewed persons' intelligence - so they aren't being asked the questions themselves, just whether the interview subject is able to answer the question: yes or no. The actual contestants have a 50-50 chance of being correct.

I hope that was explained correctly, I only saw the show once.

Based on that viewing it was my observation that people in the U.S. often have highly specialized intelligence in the main - they know one area very well and are almost utter dolts in other areas. Think about it.

I've seen that show.
It is depressing how often the contestant guesses the wrong answer is right. That cuts it to only one third being correct and that one third not even picking the right answer from the two answers, knowing one is correct.

LadyEllen -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 3:09:07 AM)

Oh, its not an American thing believe me (and as Kedikat said, we have no idea of how things really are if they only show us the stupid ones!)

Last year we had a memorial day for the Holocaust. TV crews went out and interviewed young people in the street about their thoughts. Something like 8 out of 10 under 25s had never heard of Auschwitz.

Just recently, UK bosses organisation the CBI complained that university graduates (age 21-23, after 16 years or so of education) were so lacking in basic English and maths that they were having to run educational courses for their new recruits. What this must indicate about their general knowledge is an easy deduction to make.

And this, this was my 15 year old sister who has been studying the subject in history at school; "who won the second world war?" (and she is in the top classes at school - heaven help those further down!).

It absolutely defies belief, doesnt it?

Political correctness in British schools is ruining the education system, this situation it also suits the elite to have a dumb population. The CBI want people who are trained for work, not educated and Blair has obliged in dumbing down the education system while failing to train people to work. Young people are losers at both ends.

My daughter started school in Britain and moved to Holland where political correctness doesn't have a foot hold and she learns about politics and current affairs in her general curriculum. It makes for a better democracy, something I fear the elite of most democracies don't want.

That video was hilarious!!!

peterK50 -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 5:29:36 AM)

A local TV station goes out on the street & asks people a question, it's always a set-up. Lexington Ky is in the top ten in the US for percentage of people with a college degree [believe it or not]. Last time the reporter asked women if they were for womens' sufferage [the right to vote]. All the women were against it thinking it was about suffering, & I'm sure those that knew were edited out, but it was amazing how many railed on against womens sufferage. Scarey

meatcleaver -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 5:51:59 AM)

Yep. They could have had a hard search for the dumb. Also being caught of guard with your mind on other things can make you spout stupid things but unfortunately I know a few people like those on the video.

Ssssh I'm even related to one!

gooddogbenji -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 5:55:30 AM)

(Talking to Americans)

"Excuse me, sir.  Canada is at a big turning point in history.  Would you mind taking a moment to congratulate them on moving to the 24 hour system?"

They even got a fucking SENATOR to do it!!!!!!!

But again, like with most propaganda, the hundreds of hours of people giving the right answers were edited out to create 5 minutes of stupid footage.

Yours,

benji

Well said, future husband. [;)]

These sorts of things remind me of data presented that America is falling way behind in engineering, because the average Joe on the street can't answer engineering questions. A country doesn't need a nation of engineers ... only enough engineers to do the amount of engineering that needs done. The college I attend is very strong in enginering. Students from all over the world attend school here. Can anyone imagine a reason why?

Chaingang -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 10:05:59 AM)

Yeah, I get it!

Likewise we only need a few people who can understand and correctly navigate geopolitical problems. I don't have to understand things when I have the "alleged criminal" in the "oral office" to do it for me!

I have never been so happy!!! I can feel my brain draining even now...

I think you are right, I do not know anyone that stupid personally. (except maybe my sister, but she is a Fox watcher)

caitlyn -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 12:15:38 PM)

I didn't say a few people ... I said enough people.

gooddogbenji -> RE: Average Stupid Person aka Born in the USA! (9/21/2006 12:28:14 PM)

Hello, my future wife!

I just remembered this show in Germany (Stefan Raab, for anyone who knows him) who did the same thing to Germans.  I'm sure you can play that game in any country if you have the patience.

Yours,

benji

I won't argue that Americans can be stupid. Hell, half of them voted for Kerry.[;)]
