Today we finally got rid of that stupid dog.  We put a free ad in the magazine looking for a loving home, preferably on a farm.  We were swamped with phone calls starting at 8 in the morning.  Probably 50 calls.  Out of the 50, My wife narrowed it down to four that she wanted to have come here so we could meet them and get a feel for them.  Out of the four she picked a family of five that lived on a farm out of town, with animals and another adult dog as a companion.  We drove out there with the mutt and stayed for a while to see how everyone interacted.  It went without a hitch.  I think she did a fantastic job.

I think this was the best thing for the mutt and also for us.  I say this because:

He shit and pissed all over the place 15 times a day.
I was forever stepping in puddles of piss.
He was eating cat shit and dragging it all over the house, into our bed and everything.
Many of our clothes wreak like piss.
Every night he would shit in the closet when we were sleeping.
We could not afford the wanton destruction of our furniture, home, clothing, personal belongings, etc.
We could not crate train him.  When we confined him the prick would bark so loud that all the neighbors heard him and called the cops.
When we went out to work and left him in the bathroom we would come home to a note in our door that the cops had been there.  The bathroom would was soaked in piss.
He would shit on the floor and then trapse it all over the house.
We did not have the time needed for him during the day.  He was an attention whore.  If we were not at his side 24 hours a day he was destroying something.
Every day when I come home from work there was garbage and pieces of the couch scattered from one end of the livingroom to the other.
He would knock the garbage can over and spread the garbage all over the house and eat anything he could find worth eating.
We put him in the bedroom during the day when we were out.  When we got home there was either a note in the door that the cops had attended, there was a message on the machine, or the cops showed up right after I arrived.
We finally got a $490 ticket for the bloody barking.  I have to go to Court in November for a dog that is not even Mine.
He was getting very hyper.  We changed his food, but that did not help.  We did not have enough space for him to run around, so he got restless.  Excercise tired him out for a short while, but then he was at it again.

I was losing My mind.  I could not take any more.  Finally I told My wife to get rid of it and eventually she agreed.  She is not too happy about it at the moment, but she will be ok I am sure.  I think she did great, and I am finally relaxed again.

Oh yeah, we have 4 cats and they are all angels.  No problems there.  That dog just happened to be the absolute stupidest mutt I have ever run across in My life.  He had two brain cells.  One for shitting and pissing and one for barking.

luckydog1:

How the hell do you train a dog when the neighbors call the cops and the SPCA on you every other day?  What exactly is it that you are supposed to do?  Beat him?

I took him outside to do his business on a regular basis.  He would not do anything.  I brought him in the house and he pissed on the floor right in front of Me.  I turned My back to him to wipe up the mess and he snuck off into the kitchen and took a shit.  I confined him to potty train him.  He barked so loud that the neighbors continuously called the cops.  That was the only time he would do his business outside.  I will give you the rolls of toilet paper and the piss soaked towels so you can clean up after him and you train that if you are so damn smart.  But you pay the damage to our home, like My $2000 desk and the fucking fines too.  $500 a pop.  Be My guest.

Oh, did I mention that on more than one occasion the cops warned us to get rid of the dog or we would keep getting fines?  Still want to train him smarty pants?

Ok, I was being a smart ass...I apoliogize. I think a 5$ muzzle or 30$ anti bark shock collar would have stopped the barking and cops coming over.  And would have saved your desk, and allowed you to crate him untill potty trained.  Beating a dog isn't very usefull, but a properly used 2$prong collar or 50$ shock collar is very effective in showing who the alpha is...

I'm glad you got rid of the dog, no one deserves to live like that.

My only question is...why didn't you put the garbage can out of reach of the dog?
I can't imagine letting a dog or cat have free rein of my home while I am away.  Or cleaning up their messes, yeck.  So, I live alone.
Those shock collars seem so cruel, but neighbors I know who have used them swear by them.  There are dogs in my neighborhood who properly submit at the property line.

SirK,

Good, you did the right thing, and I'm glad you had the responsibility to advertise and carefully select a good home for the dog, rather than to just dump it at the pound, or worse.  Unfortunately, dogs do have negative personality traits just like people do, and you were unlucky enough to find yourself with a needy, attention-whore dog, lol.  They do exist, and are fine for people with a lot of free time on their hands.  I won't judge you because I went through a similar situation with a former pet.  Luckily we lived rural enough that no police ever came, but we came home many times to find his heavy-metal crate tipped over on its side.  He did outgrow the separation anxiety, but it took almost three years.

Not every dog fits into every household, and it sounds as though the farm with kids and other dogs will be ideal for him.  Sorry you had to go through this, though.  Don't feel bad....you did the right thing!

There are some great laid-back, non-needy breeds out there, like Golden Retreivers and Basset Hounds.  The Golden I had some years ago would chase balls until she'd drop over, but in the house, she was so quiet, I'd forget she was around.  Other than the shedding, she was a great dog.

I appreciate the encouragement..   My wife was bawling all the way home and I do not know if words can really describe how I felt, even questioning if I did the right thing and wondering if we should go back and get him.

The cops did mention a shock collar for him, but I felt that was inhumane as well. It was mentioned rubbing his nose in it and confining him.  I tried that for weeks.  It did not work.

We have a tall garbage can in the kitchen with a lid that latches.   He managed to get the lid open and knock it over.  We really had nowhere else to put it.

There goes the phone again.  That will make it about 20 calls so far today.  Wow.  I am shutting the phone off now.

Rubbing a dog's nose in his "business" doesn't work.  It just makes him think the person doing it is mean.  He doesn't relate that action to what he did.

I think you did the right thing too.  While reading your original post I kept thinking (besides how awful that must have been to deal with!) aww the poor dog.  He was obviously very needy and was trying to tell you something.  Dogs usually don't do that  kind of thing just to be mean, though I'm sure there are those who would disagree, and I know there are exceptions!

It sounds as though you must have posted about this dog elsewhere - Rather than have you recap the situation with where the dog came from, etc., could you point me to the prior thread?  I'm just curious, animal person that I am.

Sometimes it's really hard to do the right thing!

Hugs for both of you!
CarolSea

I will be interested to read that.

I can not find the thread.  I tried the search feature, but I guess I am not very good with it.  Hopefully someone else can point you to it.
