I received this in an email. Is it true?

citgo gas:

PLEASE forward this to as many people as possible.

Cindy & Chavez
Venezuela Dictator Vows To Bring Down U.S. Government

Venezuela government is sole owner of Citgo gasoline company

Venezuela Dictator Hugo Chavez has vowed to bring down the U.S. government. Chavez, president of Venezuela, told a TV audience: "Enough of imperialist aggression; we must tell the world: down with the U.S. empire. We have to bury imperialism this century."

The guest on his television program, beamed across Venezuela, was Cindy Sheehan, the antiwar activist. Chavez recently had as his guest Harry Belafonte, who called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world."

Chavez is pushing a socialist revolution and has a close alliance with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Regardless of your feelings about the war in Iraq, the issue here is that we have a socialist dictator vowing to bring down the government of the U.S. And he is using our money to achieve his goal!

The Venezuela government, run by dictator Chavez, is the sole owner of Citgo gas company. Sales of products at Citgo stations send money back to Chavez to help him in his vow to bring down our government.

Take Action

Please decide that you will not be shopping at a Citgo station. Why should U.S. citizens who love freedom be financing a dictator who has vowed to take down our government?

Very important. Please forward this to your friends and family. Most of them don't know that Citgo is owned by the Venezuela government.

YOU CAN VERIFY THIS ON THE CITGO WEB PAGE.

It's not true because Chavez is not a dictator, he is a democratically elected leader. As for threatening to bring down the American Empire, even if it is true, talk is cheap. However, how many legitimate governments as the US actually brought down?

There is nothing wrong with a country nationalising its assets for the benefit of all its people.

It's actually the most obvious indicator of how current politics are really just the wealthy elite squabbling over resources. Assassination talk and military coups is just par for the course there I think. Bush and Chavez are almost two of a kind - I am however more sympathetic to Chavez. If Chavez is a dictator then I have to wonder what that makes Bush!

This smear campaign is really the pot calling the kettle black, and just as stupid:

Consider your possible willingness to believe that Chavez stole the election in his country of Venezuela (a process overseen and certified by former American Prez Jimmy Carter BTW). Now consider that Bush stole his own elections twice. Electronic voting machines just have these assholes salivating, truly.

The point being?  ALL of the oil companies buy oil from Venezuela, so if one was concerned about supporting Chavez then you would simply have to buy NO gas.

What difference does it make who owns a company?   Any company?  I know lots of people that don't like Bill Gates (microsoft) becasue he is to rich.   Yet they still seem to be buying products from him thus increasing his profits even more.

If Chavez thinks he can bring down the American Economy then so be it.   Let him try.  It is his right.  I know Americans that would like to bring it down too because our standard of living is higher than the 3rd world nations.  but don't take their TVs and sterios.

From the corporate history page

In September, 1986, Southland sold a 50 percent interest in CITGO to Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. PDVSA acquired the remaining half of CITGO in January, 1990. With a secure and ample supply of crude oil, CITGO quickly became a major force in the energy arena

Besides it is 170 miles more or less to the nearest CITGO station from here.  So let them go to it if they choose.  Personally I don't believe that they can take us down.

Well since 85% of Venezualans live in poverty, it doesn't seem like much oil money is going to his people. Of course that isn't surprising.
