......reminds me a bit of when Childline was started...there was a massive rise in the reported incidence of child abuse, people blamed the helpline.........thing is, unlike the states where i saw groceries boasting of a drug testing policy, such a thing as employee drug testing is novel in the UK. There may well have been a rise in the reported incidence, but i reckon its much more likely to do with the increase in tests being made......revealing a truer figure.

Nice bit of linked reporting there from The Independent.

Main story = workers (slaves) turning to substance abuse to cope with corporate ownership of their flesh (or maybe I'm reading too much into it and the drug use is out of works hours).

Underneath in the "Also in this section" section:

Politicians dishonesty........

Potential murderers telling all and sundry that they are going to kill people and all and sundry unable to do anything about it so potential murderer goes ahead and kills people.....

Police targetting drug profiteering............

People getting blown up and not receiving any real support apart from cheap political points scoring........

It's a happy old world isn't it? Full marks to The Independent for effectively stating that globalisation and corporate domination is not good for our well being.

NG - and remember, I do like and respect you - is there ANY thread you wont turn into some left wing political point!?

People take drugs not because they are bad people, but because they have lives with which for some reason they cannot cope, and by way of drugs they are relieved of having to deal with them, incidentally doing bad things to get the drugs. There's no point in banning it, arresting dealers and so on, without doing something about the underlying problems which drove people to drug abuse in the first place - yes NG, a left wing political point!

What really, really ticks me off about stories like this and the inference of British workers being awful drug abusers, is the number of company directors I meet who are alcoholics. Of course, being company directors, they're connoisseurs rather than winos, but a drunk by any other name smells the same. Its just the aura of authority and steady middle class appearance that makes them connoisseurs rather than alcoholics. And theyre doing exactly the same thing with alcohol as their employees might be doing with cocaine or whatever, whilst pontificating on the abuse of drugs by those living a less advantaged life!?

That even the higher-ups in British society are into substance abuse, says a lot about life in Britain. You Americans come here on business or on vacation, but trust me, if you had to live here, you'd probably find yourself drunk or drugged eventually!

How do I get into Montana? Hablo espanol.....

LadyEllen, I'm lost, you appear to be saying Britain turns people to drink which is exactly what I was saying if you substitute drink for drugs. Can you please not back up my left-wing points with your left-wing points! Thanks in advance. (Also, it could be wise to remember that The Independent is a genuine left-wing paper and the journalists who right for this paper tend to have left-wing views and actually write with a left-wing bias, subtely too you'd be surprised to hear).

And speaking of "steady middle class appearance" I was thinking about you today (just another normal day in my life, LadyE), well actually, I was thinking of all the British posters on here and who they'd vote for at the General Election and I had you down as nailed on middle-class, swing Lib-Dem/Tory voter. Looks like I'm barking up the wrong tree eh?

Comprehensive list:

Philosophy - one of the independent parties such as Respect or the Welsh Independence Party.
MC - abstained.
Lady E - see above.
EDNW - swing Labour/Tory.
Seeks - swing Tory/BNP.

As for the article, the point being made is that drugs has become an integral part of our society to the point where it is being used and detected in the workplace (although well known to a minority most are blissfully unaware of this). In terms of what this means, draw your own conclusions.

People are worried because Tony Blair is about to step down !

Lady E, anyone who can spell connysur must be drug/alcohol free.
Now, who's hidden the wine bottle, I know its here somewhere !

Wrong about me NG, I am not as moderate as that, I would support a mixture of Attila the Hun,Genghis Khan and the Viking marauders attitudes   with regard to law and disorder.

Current drug policies are hypocritcal in the extreme.

Hmmm, very good, Seeks. So, why is that, then?

Give testing another ten years and it will of filtered down to the lower paid jobs where poor souls like myself cannot afford to get wasted every weekend let alone mid week and you will find the number  will drop significantly

You've got me right. I live in Amsterdam and I don't believe people should be allowed to vote if they are resident abroad unless they work for the country, soldiers, diplomats etc.

However, it does give me a legitimate reason for abstaining rather than deciding to vote for someone from a really bad bunch.

Back on topic. My former nearest and dearest used to work in the city and 100% of her colleagues used to take cocaine. I used to work in the Probation Service and my estimate was 25% took cocaine. As for me, give me a pint of real ale any day of the week. It is the one thing about blighty I really really miss.

....shocking thought here........some people take drugs simply because they like the effects, a little like having a drink or two or three.......not necessarily an escape from a *bad life* or one in which they can't cope.

Explain myself?  No, I consider myself completely inexplicable.  I try very hard not to even try to try...although sometimes I fail in the attempt...

I consider it a major triumph of substance abuse that I've managed a glass of white wine a night for two days running.  That's two units more than I manage most weeks.  The only intoxicants I like to inhale are whisky fumes, the smell of fresh coffee and essential oils. Favourite thing to snort is 'in derision'.

As for the other 60 million of us....well, I'll leave them to write their own explanations...

Indeed, no. 3rd picture in, 2nd shelf up - is that your circular coke mirror right there in plain view of god and man?!!! And then, 6th picture in, in the background - wtf, Chucky?!!!

So yes, I think some explaining is in order.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Did they happen to mention who was taking the drugs? I mean are we talking about the young guy who works in tescos smoking a joint or the office manager snorting coke at lunch time?

Ah, I see...the classic "non-denial denial." No mention of what is clearly your coke mirror right next to your personal computer.

Have you no shame?
