That reflects more on Americans who read Newsweek than it does on Newsweek.

It shows how they change the news to keep us in the dark, I find that repulsive

The news wasn't changed from what I could see.  It just wasn't featured on the front page.

And why is that? Is it because they want to de-emphasis that story? I would think that they did repackage the cover for an american audience.... tricks get played like this regularly where CNN in other countries carry different stories about the US

Level -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/25/2006 6:50:58 PM)

But the story is the same. I do think it's stupid to change the cover.

I don't see it as a "trick".  Entertainment sells in this country.  Angelina Jolie is entertainment.

juliaoceania -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/25/2006 7:25:26 PM)

Then I am still repulsed even from that vantage point...lol

WyrdRich -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/25/2006 7:26:31 PM)

Newsweek has a long history of being second or third best at what they do anyway.  Why not run Annie Liebowitz on the cover and try to sell to people who appreciate her art?

What are the circulation numbers?  The link may have put the US cover in the least prominent position but that is the money issue.  I doubt all the international issues combined generate a fraction of the domestic take.  The US cover came first.  It was probably changed for the others because bad news about the US sells better there.

toservez -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/25/2006 7:41:38 PM)

It is why the media sucks and we the American people deserve it. It is not about reporting or writing about the truth it is about how many issues sell. It is very simple, Newsweek knows and every other corporate own media for profit organization, do not turn off a potential customer and fluff sells. The issues may be the same but the cover might turn off too many who might buy.

The 10% far right will read and watch their partisn media and the 10% far left will watch theirs. Most of the rest of the middle do not want to engage there brain and prefer denial. We are a self absorb country. We get informed mostly by accident, so this example Newsweek tries to trick poeple into buying a news magazine by putting a celeb on the cover. Yes, the corporate media think we are that stupid and they probably have scientific data to prove that a celeb on a cover will out sell a cover with news we do not want to hear.

That's what it's all about if your primary purpose is to sell magazines.

Which cover will sell more copies here in the USA?

Sad, isnt it?

philosophy -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/26/2006 5:17:35 AM)

.......to be fair to the American media, this sort of thing isn't an exclusively US phenomena. i see it as a simple expression of the profit motive. Social worth will not pay Newsweeks bills, so they have to go commercial. Now......as to whether or not that's a good or healthy thing, that's a different matter.....but i think it is a far deeper problem than any one magazine, or even any one medium. Test screenings for movies, where the popular vote can actually change the story........another symptom of the same problem i reckon.
The arts and media have to give people what they want in order to survive, but really they should be giving us what we need......and sometimes that's uncomfortable.

He used to be mayor of Cincinnati, ran for governor of Ohio, and recently has seriously considered runs for Governor and Senator. He was a member of the Ohio delegation to the Democratic National Convention, and the Ohio Democratic party named him Democrat of the Year in 2004.

WyrdRich -> RE: Why The American Media Sucks: In Four Simple Pictures (9/26/2006 9:42:12 AM)

Maybe it's the sinus meds, but what I'm seeing here is a clear illustration of why I take the positions I do and disagree so strongly with those I think are in denial of the real issue.

Does it occur to anyone that Newsweek put a lesbian on the cover?  A woman who went out and lived a truly amazing life on her own terms?  Even if you like to sneer at pop culture (and who doesn't sometimes?) she was at the top of it.  We all know the art and intimacy of her portraits.

The link would love for you to believe the real story, that we are "LOSING Afghanistan," was pushed off because Americans are being lied to.  The truth is that the woman was taken off the cover for the rest of the world.  That is what should be bothering us.  It bothers me.

at times our governement resembles a jerry springer show.

poop on clinton for not gettting osmma, how could he when he was gettting such great sex....!!

and now a "leaked intelligenge report"  gags.  ok- it is LEAKED,and it is INTELEGIENCE, hadnt we been down this street before??

what bangs the crap out of me is how final the election is- when it hasnt kept up with midern life. we cant count people in a census and we now cant count votes.

does anyone really want to win unfairly... or a better question, this is the best and brightest talent we got? i say none of the above vote would redo the election.
now all the uproar over voting machines. we hurried that shoddy legislation in. so if states sue whoever what does it really mean???

If all news was based on what is entertaining rather than what is happening in the real world, you'd have a nation full of airheads.

Angelina Jolie, i never heard of her.
