Yes, 'cause we don't have enough dogs and cats running around this country.

lalbobbilynn -> RE: At Least We Care About Animals ... (9/26/2006 9:56:58 AM)

i have such an intoxicating view on this topic..... stems from working as a manager at a local SPCA.

Being in the position i was in, one needs to look at the situation as a whole. It is not about one's love for animals, more about being our brother's keeper.

i have and ALWAYS will love animals..... they are true, honest, and pure.... unlike most humans.
That being said, we need to know our hard limits, if you will.

i am pleased as punch these animals are getting a home, for they ask not all they have been lacking; nevertheless, i am incensed that $250,000 is not bestowed on our local animals. I am a touch enraged as well that those needy animals roaming about my country shall be put to death simply because others across the pond are in a similar situation.

Was my job..... daily....... to euthanize that which our society felt was undeserving, and worthless.

Stop for a moment..... close your eyes......... imagine if you will........... you are standing over an animal....... dog/cat/puppy/kitten/rabbit/bear, which ever stirs you soul to ache........ all have failed this creature....... more are coming in by way of drop-off's, and Animal Control..... you are aware of your limits.... to take said animal home will merely get you on the news for having an illegal amount of animals...... there is only so much one can give. Do you keep the animal..... caged....... alone....... with only fractions of your time..... they have been in your care at the shelter for months, with no interest from the public, the animal has been tested..... clean bill of health........ what is YOUR choice??
Other animals are waiting..... their fate depends on this choice as well...... euthanize this one or the new comer.

Respect

Respect that You are one person who can call other shelters, and rescues' for specific animals types.
Respect that you have limits. ~ You agreed to do a job no matter how you wish to rip your hair out and spit on every human being who walks in the door to drop off another unwanted.
Respect that this animal deserves the very best..... in life and death.
Respect there is not enough space...... time or money.

Now sedate the animal........ caress, him/her...... DO NOT cry...... is not about you...... is about being what you need to be for this animal at this time....... apologize for not having more..... time/space/MONEY....... and when the animal finds slumber......... main line a lethal dose to this beautiful creatures heart.

Do this..... often two dozen times in a day.

Bring more here??? Well sure.......... makes us look good anyway............. and it is all about illusions....... the facade.

A more acceptable mirage that could become reality................. maybe ten or possibly fifty people could go to their local shelters........... ask to volunteer.......... walk a dog........ brush a dog or cat..... speak gently to this animal..... give a moment of respect to that which has been entrusted to us. Be You brothers keeper.... if only for sixty minutes.

Take Care of Our own backyard, prior to extending our hand/time or wallet to our neighbors backyard.

Just my two cents........ just a thought!

I never met an animal that started a war.

Lashra -> RE: At Least We Care About Animals ... (9/26/2006 10:08:36 AM)

I love animals in fact way back I used to manage a dog kennel. One of the saddest things was owners who abandoned their pets. They'd bring them in while they went on *vacation* and never come to get them. We'd keep them as long as we could, try to locate the owners only to find we were given false contact information. The looks on these poor dogs faces as we walked by their kennels, the expectation of seeing a family member come to get them was heartbreaking.
Finally we would try to find them a home before sending them to the spca and the kennel would eat the cost of their care. If we couldn't find them a home then it was up to the SPCA.
It was very rare but it did happen.

At least we don't need to worry about some of them being potential suicide bombers...

nightrosemom -> RE: At Least We Care About Animals ... (9/26/2006 11:47:15 AM)

I like what was said about cleaning our own back yard before helping our neighbors.  I love animals, i care for them deeply...but we have strays all around. My neighbor has 5 dogs, and at least 10 cats, 90% of her cats are outdoor cats, but still, she has so many animals she can barely feed herself because of the cost of food for the animals.  she has had 2 litters of puppies before she just got the male that was the father fixed, people like that take in strays, but it gets to the point where they cant take anymore.  I do realize that the animals need rescuing, but how much money are we putting in to fly those animals back here to go into shelters when there are how many homeless people in our country, and how many starving families in our country.  We are in debt up to our necks and we keep spending more money to do stuff like this instead of helping our own country.

I went to see Louis Black the other day, and he said something almost exactly like this, and I very much identify with this sentiment.
It is a little more than startling to me when I work with someone for years, and know that she has cats but not children (which she does).   M

Such an obvious point nightrosemom.

Where do this neighbors limits end?
The road to HELL is paved with such honorable intentions.

Unsure where You are located; nevertheless, some shelters have this system:
If you are low income, elderly, anyone in your home is on any level of assistance, "some" shelters will give you a.... and usually only one, voucher to have your animal spayed or neutered at little or no cost. There may be only ceratin vets that are involved.

Also......is not merely about food, and shelter. These animals will need continous care regarding shots and the like. Is not a thing to just jump on...........

Ohhhhhhhhh look at the cute puppy/kitty!!

Yes, and nine months later with a host of bad habits from being ignored and not so cute anymore.... look at me end Cutie Pies life. ~ Stellar.

Look a bit further...... if this breaks your heart so...... volunteer to become a Guardian Ad Litem..... people treat there children far worse than any four legged animal.

i do so need to slow my roll.... i may jack knife here!!!!!

Oh no please don't give them any new ideas.

Bearlee -> RE: At Least We Care About Animals ... (9/26/2006 12:20:50 PM)

Well personally, I think every animal sent here should have a sponsor BEFORE it immigrates; like we don't have enough homeless animals already?

...but I tend to be pragmatic that way

maybemaybenot -> RE: At Least We Care About Animals ... (9/26/2006 12:27:37 PM)

I think it's wonderful, touching and humane.
A few points to consider:

Those of you who said * we* should do such and such, or * we * should should spend our money elsewhere:
This operation is being run by 2 independent animal protection organizations.
* our * money, time or what ever is not being spent. Unless you happen to donate to these groups. I suspect the people who gave their money and support them are not blinking an eye about this project.
Yes, we have way too many strays, yes, we euthanize healthy animals because their are not enough homes for them. This is a direct result if irresponsible pet ownership. BUT these animals will all be nuetered, if not already done my the Lebonese group, there will be very careful screening to ensure they go to homes that are committed to their pets.

I appluad their efforts. Millions of world wide government money is going to help the people of Lebanon . A few hundred thousand dollars of private money to save these animals is a " steal" in my book.

Already in progress...............

"At the height of the war, the abandoned animals were featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” after which adoption offers from the U.S. “started coming down on us by the hundreds,” Khoury said."

“Once there, the pets will undergo a final health and behavior evaluation before they’re off to their new, permanent homes,” Mountain said. “We’ve already had a lot of offers to adopt these cats and dogs.”

fast reply... I think there is something to be said for adopting animals here instead of importing them

Look at these stats

quote:

Using the National Council's numbers from 1997 and estimating the number of operating shelters in the United States to be 3,500 (the exact number of animal shelters operating in the United States does not exist), here are the statistics:

  • Of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the National Council's survey, 4.3 million animals were handled.
  • In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else.
  • 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification.
  • Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners.
  • 25% of dogs and 24% of cats that enter animal shelters are adopted.

It is from these numbers that we estimated what is occurring nationwide. It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States

Look on the bright side, at least it's not more "refugees" that the Taxpayers would have to foot the bill for!

< not being a smart ass >

I feel exactly the same way about adopting children, julia.

But I support the individuals right who chose do do otherwise with their own money. I would only object if it was funded by government dollars.
