sweetnsensual -> Have Horrible Walls--Any Advice? (9/26/2006 10:43:52 AM)

     I live in one of those houses that were built in the 70's, a time when people were putting bits of sand into paint and plaster (if that's what it is, it's white and thick and you can smooth it on walls) and put it on their walls for a textured look.
     In every house I've ever lived in, I've had this "treatment" and it's so hard to paint with it.  I've always dreamed of having nice, plain smooth walls.
    Does anyone know what I can do to get my extremely coveted smooth walls?  I've thought of smoothing it over with plaster (again, if this is the right word) but that would take so much time, work and of course materials and even then, it probably wouldn't be that smooth.  I've also contemplated putting up drywall but that's also difficult and I'd be losing space--albeit only a few inches but I need every inch I can get in my bedroom.  And preferably, I'd like to be able to do to the solution myself or with a couple other people, if need be.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks everyone and have a lovely day.

you could water the paint down when you paint, maybe spray it. in this place everything was panelled, which i painted over all of it. put up some mirrors and its cool shiek.

stop in lowes and check out some of their panelling.

most the time that texured look was done as the plaster was too far gone too do anything with.

if you want a quick fix- get out a nicely patterred sheet- or bedspread- and staple gun. if it is poorly insulated it might be a bit warmer.

i had a room i could do nothing with.  for 50 cents, i penciled in grout as tho the wall was of brick and coble stone. looks cool too.  :-)

beleive me- you dont have to do a rehab to get a whole new look. just use your imagination.  :-)
