I can see the trend forming though If the EU survives it's in fighting, there will certainly be other regions that will attempt the same.

In Fact I'm thinking that Chavez has a similar thought in mind himself for South and Central America

Hi M [:)]..... I hope you're right. I think people's annoyance with "politics as usual" from the Democrats and Republicans will build to a high enough level to get some change going. Maybe they'll even make me King.... [X(]

Iran.

The integrity of their position earns them consideration. Their pragmatic positions regarding religion, politics and intolerance for contrary opinions insures that all under their influence would work toward the common good of the world wide society they would insist upon. Rules, and more importantly, the universal enforcement of rules would eliminate issues that plague us now. Censorship would no longer be "arbitrary". EEO/AA would be non issues. No more debate about the abortion issue. The roads less congested with no woman drivers. The only Republicans would the "Republican Guard". Sure, pork futures would plunge, but they could be replaced by goats. The thread of international terrorism would be dramatically reduced.

I imagine this would be a godsend to those who disdain the US for providing an environment where open debate and discussion is encouraged.

"Goat futures"? It just don't sound right, Merc.......[:D]

Of course, Iran would dearly love to occupy the top spot..... but what a horror show with the mullahs in charge. It breaks my heart that there are so many educated and decent people there, but they haven't found a way around the idiots yet.

Ahh, but Chavez has the heart of a jackal, unlike our European friends.

Oh and we've left out another major player (us Euro/ western centric arrogant bastards)

India certainly is rivaling China economicly, and their population problem is ripe for a huge growth spurt should they get around the profit over people problem.

True. They have the numbers of youth, and hunger, to be a major force for some time. If they and Pakistan can maintian peace, that is....

i think that the United Nations needs restructured and redesigned to do what they were supposed to do...new laws and regulations to make them a neutral governing agency and made up of the leaders of the different countries as it was meant to be.

If you ever have called a customer "service" center for many airlines and most software companies you'll discount the possibility of India taking over the world. Unless it occurs when everyone just gets frustrated and metaphorically "hangs up" on their leadership roles; as I do when I'm forced to try an accomplish something talking to an India based call center. The frustrating thing is that they are so damn courteous and friendly while making me crazy because they can't understand what I want or what I'm saying.

China is tricky because of their size. they are older but the big problem down the line with them is there child policy screwed up their demographics and have way too many boys to girls and when they become adults history shows us this is a very dangerous scenario. Many people feel this is one of the big problems in the Middle East for example.

Back to OP. It is not that we want U.S. to be less powerful, it is that we are squandering our power and creating ill will. We simply are not bigger then the rest of the world combine and despite all of our tough talk that comes from the White House and Fox news, we do need allies in order to be powerful.

toservez, I agree with you about "Allies" but "Allies" need to kick in an equal amount of money and arms.
The U.S. has about fifteen Aircraft Carriers, all of Europe has what, 3 or 4?
They are tremendously expensive to build and to operate.
It's time that the "world" cut the apron strings with U.S. Taxpayers.
For myself as a U.S.Taxpayer I'm simply no longer willing to be baring the costs of a lot of the things the people in Washington would like to do and that includes rebuilding Iraq, foreign aid, "refugee" programs, and a whole host of other things.
And our Congressmen and Senators are getting that message from the Voters too!
Hopefully when Bush goes we'll get a President who cares about America and not foreign intervention.

toservez -> RE: Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 2:37:12 PM)

It will be interesting about the Europe progression. I found it interesting that kids think of themsleves as European. History has showed us for such a small land mass compared to the many countries that this has not been the case at all. Will be interesting and bucking history if it actually happens.

I have not been to India and despite my comments on China, I am not a fan of them at all, but from what I have read and talked to poeple, India still needs to get their act together inside their country while China is trying to raise the standards for all their people and in the long run, good or bad, that will give them a much stronger foundation.

I dont want any replacement, I want the US to be in that position.

LOL Merc.... no, I don't think they'll take over the world, or the leader role, I guess I got sidetracked from the OP a bit, but I do see them having a bright future, and weilding some amount of global power.

Do not dissagree but to me the world has changed and it is not about the amount of ships and troops that makes a country powerful and when "allies" realize they do not need the U.S.  permission and/or money in order to thrive because of other allies and emerging economical markets that might not bode well for us both economically and security wise.

European countries have been dealing with terroism a while now. They have not asked or needed the U.S. help before and now it is looking almost like it is cool or wise not to cooperate with us now. That just cannot be good. It will be very interesting to see when Blair steps down what happens in Great Britain.

jesskitty -> RE: Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 2:52:12 PM)

i'm pretty sure china would take over currently. i'd personally like canada to though. it seems like their a peaceful country that is still working on how to take care of their people but is doing a better job than america is.

as i been reviewing the replies- it is chilling to think it any other way. this would have been a very diffenert conversation prior to "iraq 2"

someone mentioned chaves, he is entertaining- but in the end couldnt amount to much.

india was mentioned. they have alot in their own back yard for now.

on talk of china per tiwann, i viewed the olympics in 08 as buying a feqw years of peace over the tiwann puzzle.

damn i cant spell or type@!!!!

I stand to be corrected but I think Europe has six. Britain has three, France, Italy and Spain have one each. I think I am right in saying they are all smaller than the average US carrier but we don't plan to invade anyone and Britain under Blair will only sail his carriers in the wake of the USs.

Most of western Europe's military were organised around Russia being the main threat and there is still a debate going on in most countries as to how their military should be organized with the main threat coming from none traditional military. For example, with Britain being an island, there is no longer a point in having so many heavy tanks stationed in a friendly country like Germany with nothing to do but destroy the local bars. With the Iraq debacle, I can't see any future Prime Minister jumping on a neocon bandwagon and Britain can't invade anyone by themself.
