I was wondering, what do those little pieces of paper on the side of discussion topics and the little faces that sometimes replace them mean? what are they there for?!?

I'm not sure about the papers, maybe that's a default setting, but the faces, when you begin a thread, you can choose one to appear there....see the faces at the top of the box when you reply to a message? That's them. I'm going to choose the marge simpson hairdo one.
