A woman that lives in my county has come down with the west nile virus.  I have been so worried since I heard this.  Does that mean that the virus is here where I live?  Once a person comes down with it, do others get it too?  I know nothing about it and it just has me so worried since it is now so close to home.

It is spread by mosquitos, Cuddles.  Better safe than sorry, so use lots of repellant if you are out and about in the evening.

Unless I'm greatly mistaken West Nile has been in Kentucky for a couple of years at least. The disease appears to have entered North America on the east coast and spread inland. It only sickens a very small number of those people infected with it and most of those get little more than a mild flu like illness. So you may have already been infected and not gotten sick or gotten sick and not known it was anything other than a cold.

As I understand it now that most songbirds in the US are resistant to the virus it is here to stay and the only real defenses are serious mosquito abatement and people with compromised immune systems being careful about using DEET based repellants. Honestly unlss you have some other chronic medical condition I wouldn't worry about West Nile.

hi cuddleheart...yes the WestNileVirus has been in Kentucky for some time, we have had to deal with it in my province for a couple of years. It is my understanding that the corvids are the main carriers of the disease. Here is a site that has some helpful tips.....and try not to worry about it too much.

West Nile is probably not all that much more dangerous than flu, and in particular when you consider how easily flu spreads and how hard it is for West Nile to spread, all this hype is ridiculous fear-mongering. Take reasonable precautions against mosquitos and go about your life. If you are really worried about health, don't smoke, be active, keep your cholesterol and blood pressure normal, don't allow excess weight to cause diabetes, wear a seat belt, don't keep guns in the home, get regular medical screening tests for your age, gender, and risk factors, and then start being paranoid about mosquitos, Spinach, and other exposures to rare infectious agents.

West Nile is really not that big of a deal as long as it is treated properly. We have had it hear in Iowa for quite some time. No one has died or suffered any long term effects. It is not nearly as big of an issue as Lyme disease.
