"NorthernGent has described UK hospitals as being something out of the "Crimean War."  The urgent care office I walked into yesterday was clean, comfortable and efficiently run."

....my mother has just finished a course of chemotherapy following a single mastectomy for breast cancer. The follow-up, care and screening were all of the very highest quality. This all happened in an NHS hospital. Quite frankly she would have recieved no better care if she had gone private. Feel as smug as you like Americans, but quite frankly, if you think that doctors having clean reception areas is better than having a system that allows all to have access to the medical care they need to be productive members of society you have your priorities wrong.

I think NG was using some degree of poetic licence for sure! The NHS is not perfect by any means - waiting lists and little access to the latest treatments if you do not fulfil certain criteria, and some hospitals are very old and in need of update, and the cleanliness can be less than one might desire, but overall its indispensable to us. You also have to bear in mind that its a national pastime for the majority in the UK, to complain about anything and everything! The usual form of this hobby takes the shape of a phrase such as "yes, we had a lovely holiday, but (insert often petty complaint)".

We should also remember that the British NHS exists at the moment in the year 1990, having suffered from the ravages of Tory (right-centre, a bit like the Republicans on a good day) administration from 1979 until 1997 when Blair was elected. He put a lot of resources back in and it has caught up a lot from its very sorry state under Tory misrule, but over the 18 years they were in charge of it so many new developments have taken place that it will take a lot more time and resource before it reaches 2006.

Still, with all its faults its something we would not be without, and especially not I, given 20 years of arthritis amongst other issues, 2 children - one of which was in intensive care for two weeks at a cost that would have bankrupted us and the high likelihood I will die slowly from throat cancer like many in my family before me.

ppl mistakenly think medicare is free. when in fact there is a monthly premium, and a host of if ands and buts. some on medicare are also on medicaid, but the states have asset limitations- which in todays $ are rediculously low.  something like 2000.00$

i thought the medicare premium was $88 a month.....

some areas drs wont take medicare either. so you are screwed then

dude, I don't know who you think is smug but it certainly is not the majority of Americans who either do not have Insurance and go without medical care or are in serious debt because of it. Or the small percentage of Americans who do have medical insurance and are stuck in dead end jobs they hate for years just to hold onto it. An old hospital is better than no hospital and there are many who deal with that.

NorthernGent has described UK hospitals as being something out of the "Crimean War."

So I did, but if memory serves it was in comparison to hospitals in Germany and it came out of the mouth of a German friend rather than mine.

NorthernGent is a self hating Brit. I don't think I've heard him say one positive thing about the country.

MC,

1) Very good for a man who doesn't even live in Britain anymore. Britain not your cup of tea?
2) Very good for a man who said the only thing he missed about Britain was real ale.

But now you love the place and I'm the self-hating Brit. You couldn't make this stuff up in a pantomime.

What do you want the board to become - a top 10 list of what we all love about Britain and the US?!

I'll tell you this much, if I could be bothered to give you the time of day I could at least name more than one thing I like about Britain which is more than you can (as per your own statement).

Well, if you didn't say that about NHS hospitals I owe you an apology NorthernGent.  I'm a big supporter of the NHS and for me, it's THE thing I love about this country.

(Other than the women.  And Carlisle United.)

If NorthernGent said that it's ludicrous and I can't imagine where he got the information from.

Edited because MC beat me to it but I'm beginning to think that NorthernGent must cringe at some of the things he himself types.

English,

In a nutshell, you don't even know what was said and you're passing judgement and insults. Very good.

And, as for some of these 'things' - where have you been for the last 2 months because you haven't replied to any of the things I have posted. Why post now? Safety in numbers I suppose, English. Also, you have to be in it to win it and some of us put our opinions up to be shot down but I don't see many (if any) from you (with the exception of the odd snipe).

Look NG - he's in Carlisle...... it takes two months to get there from Manchester, so what do you expect I wonder!?

Actually people, Carlisle is a really nice place with nice people, near the Scottish border and seemingly miles away from anywhere - which is probably why the place is nice and the people are nice - because theyre far away from the rest of us. Anyway, if English doesnt post for a while, thats his affair isnt it? I didnt think CM was compulsory, even though its something of a compulsion for me.

I have my tea shipped over. You just can't buy decent tea over here.

Hell! What greater compliment can a country have than love of its beer?

Of course it's his call but why say I'm beginning to think that NorthernGent must cringe at some of the things he himself types.

Surely it's better to have the bollocks to challenge these cringeworthy posts rather than just come in when all the hyenas are frothing at the mouth in a safety in numbers policy.

My husband died in July 2006.  It was necessary for my son and i to have insurance immediately and so the Cobra came into play.  For the 2 of us i pay 771 per month plus have a 750 deductable for each of us and co pays as well as pay 20% of other items.  In short while my husband made good money my portion of his social security benefit is spent monthly on nothing except insurance and medical.  So in short i pay a lot for poor insurance but will eventually have to have something that does not exclude preexisting health problems.  Thinking i may have to go back to work just for bad insurance.

NorthernGent, have you ever considered posting only on left-wing websites where everyone will agree with your views, never challenge you on anything and never disturb your hyper sensitive character?

You'd get here quicker if the local Mancunian drug dealers weren't stealing your hub caps (while you were driving)

What we have in the States is the best health care money can buy.  For those without substantial wealth or good insurance, what we have is a cruel tease.  The system desperately needs fixing.
