WhipTheHip -> Gravity sucks or death by black hole. (9/29/2006 6:39:36 AM)

A new super collider particle accelerator will be coming online
soon.  They say it may produce black holes here on Earth.
Some say, we are playing with fire, and we could end up
creating a black hole that sucks the Earth into it.

This could be the reason we haven't been visited by UFOs
or people from future.  As soon as civilizations get
technically advanced enough to create black holes, they
do.  And these black holes end the civilizations that
create them.  The same curiousity that drives science
and technology could kill the cat.

Scientists say this won't happen, and we all know
scientists never make mistakes or miscalculations.
If Von Neuman could make a "silly error" anything
si possible.   Didn't we lose a Viking ship because
some of the code was written for British measurements
and part of code was written for metric measurements?

That would be a way to go.  Getting sucked down
a tight black hole.  That sounds like a fear a lot of
men have.

That nothing. Theyve had a black hole in Calcutta for centuries and it hasnt done them any harm.

Well, apart from rampant disease of course.

Is this new project another of Halliburton's ways to improve the world?

LMAO

Rule -> RE: Gravity sucks or death by black hole. (9/29/2006 7:52:06 AM)

The black hole hypothesis is merely an erroneous interpretation of observed astronomical phenomena.

In some cases black holes are illusions created by Zeeman Effect stars. In most other cases they are neutron stars spinning at ultrafast velocities.

Ok, in case some people read this and think you're serious...

Most people do not understand what a black hole is. It is not a hole in space which engulfs everything. The current theory is that it is a structure that is so dense that it creates an extremly high gravitational field. It will "eat" mass and light that travels within a specific distance of it. That distance is related to it's size.

Supercolliders work with subatomic particles. That means they are very, very, very tiny. A black hole created with these particles would then be very, very tiny. The specific distance at which it would be dangerous would then also be very, very, very tiny. The relative risk is very, very, very, small.

Read this: http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/060919_black_holes.html

And besides:

Prove that we haven't been visited by UFOs.

Prove that we haven't been visited by beings from the future.

Yanno, you might get sucked into a black hole in your reality.  Somehow, I doubt the greater CM population will care.

Yours,

benji

Edited because his giant font pissed me off.

OK Benji- I give up-

What is oreilography?

He's actually right about that, people.

All this guy gooddogbenji  does is snipe at other users.
The post of mine this guy commented on was an
innocuous, good-humored post.  His response
was totally uncalled for.  If you don't want
collarme.com users to take the law into their own
hands, you need to shut this kind of thing down.
When I saw you allowed Benji to make all
kinds of nasty, abusive posts, I thought you
didn't care what people wrote.

You know Benji, you are all ready in a black
hole.  By the way, the last I checked you
don't speak for any collarme.com member
but yourself.

I was serious.

> Most people do not understand what a black hole is.

Stephen Hawking once claimed entropy decreased in black holes.
I think he was right.  Physicists don't fully understand what a black
hole is.

>  It is not a hole in space which engulfs everything.

That is pretty much what current theory says it is.

> The current theory is that it is a structure that is so dense
> that it creates an extremly high gravitational field.

General Relativity teaches there is no such thing as gravitational fields.
Matter warps space.  Dense matter makes a depression in space.
Very dense matter makes a deep hole in space.  Super dense
matter may make a hole (wormhole) or a drain in space.

But as it sucked in more and more matter it would grow in size.
Black holes have an ability to grow.  How big did you start out
the night you were conceived?   If you were a black hole, you'd
swallow the earth in nanoseconds.

> The specific distance at which it would be dangerous would
> then also be very, very, very tiny.

And as this black hole moves around and swallows more
and more matter, what happens next?

> The relative risk is very, very, very, small.

Not all physicists agree with this.  There is a very small risk
that any one person will win the lotto.  But they do!  Small
risks happen all the time.

> Prove that we haven't been visited by UFOs.

Prove 1 + 1 =  2

I shouldn't worry Whip, Black Holes will no doubt go the way Dark matter is due to go...
Down the Plughole... with a left spin in the Southern Hemisphere.

I've just had some double glazing fitted in an upstairs bedroom and first cold morning I get condensation on the OUTSIDE
Is that normal?
I know that's deviation ...but it is a scientific problem and could be related to Black Holes. in my back garden.

M. SFS-

I get that too, on the shaded side of the house- the outer glass stays cool as the air warms up, and the humidity spikes in the morning...

Stay warm,
Lawrence

The whale is undoubtably one of the largest mammals alive today, Lam.

The interdependance of the biospheres as well as the unknown causiality of the interdependant variables ensconsed within, would lead one to know for a fact that  whales are actually subsuming  humans to their will  and I can give prima facia  proof  of  that fact, but the internet is to small to contain it.

In my mind, it ain't barbara.

One can have a plausible lead in statement, with incoherent thought to follow.

One might construct apparent coherent logic behind a lead in assertion.

The scale of the ponderable universe puts the lie to this immediately.  There exist black holes throughout (I am convinced, and Lam, I understand if you are not so inclined)
and while we may chicken little much betimes, there is no doubt in my mind that none has yet become the big Oreck in the sky and did us in.

And so I can confidentally assert that the whale is undoubtably  one of the largest mammals alive today....

The rest is musing, or amusing...........

That sounds like a load of old Moby Dick to me.

Thanks for the info. Topcat.
What to do with a patio door thats going to be fitted next? Always something goes wrong !

I thought it sounded like an Art Bell'ism, so I looked it up:

SSC's website: http://www.hep.net/ssc/

More info:  http://www.greatguy.com/supercon.htm

Wikipedia info, which goes into more detail (unsure if biased or not) as to why Congress shut the program down in 1993: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_Supercollider

If the project has been reopened, I did not find anything on it.

And how, exactly, would you take the law into your own hands?  With rational, well thought out posts like you have made against me in the past?

I'll just continue sniping till the law comes to get me (Which is actually quite often, unfortunately, they neither cage nor whip me)
