"The truth needs no defense."

..........can't agree with this i'm afraid. There are too many historical situations where truth needed to be defended for it to be true. Besides, the corrollary is equally absurd.........'lies need no attack.'...........personally i like to attack lies whenever i can........i think it makes the world a better place.

What's "true" to one person is "false" to another.
Sit a Muslim and a Christian down and ask them about God for instance.
And,....everyone has their own opinion.

Dawkins on "God" and the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Richard Dawkins asserts that belief in god is irrational and inflicts great harm upon societies.

Yeah, it does. Because people are living in their own subjective imaginary little worlds instead of objective reality. FWIW, I think Philosophy was referring to objective reality. But this amply shows the harm of delusional faith systems.

Truth doesn't need defending.  Which is why I rarely read a post after I've posted to one.  I put my opinion out there which usually is based on fact or real life experience.  If anyone chooses to read it they do.  If not, their loss not mine.  I don't need to continue saying it over and over to deaf ears.  It is counter productive and I have better things to do with my time.

Am I understanding you correctly that your position is to post your opinion for others to read and hopefully learn from, but that you see no reason to read their opinions and learn from them? You aren't saying you don't post multiple times -- which would seem consistent with your thesis, but that you don't even read the responses. That seems remarkably arrogant. Am I misunderstanding?

Then again, I suppose you won't read this.

Sub4hire has a remarkable mind, wide life experience, and little time to diddle with fools....but she is anything but arrogant.  pinkee

Just because Richard Dawkins says it, doesn't make it so.  [:D]

You're right, the observation is valid on its own terms not because of who states it.

I find this topic intriguing, and yet ponder another question: do you believe in guilt by omission?  If I know something that could kill the spirit of a friend, am I lying by speaking an abridged truth?  We speak of integrity, and honesty, and character within our partners, yet the question remains... Is the "naked truth" required, or just requested?

What have I said that makes me intolerant?  I do not tolerate intolerance!

By truth, I mean like the sun comes up in the east and sets in the west.  This is a fact, not an opinion.  There are truths that may be hard to accept- like when my ass grows and my jeans don't fit.  My ass got bigger- it is a fact, not an opinion.  (Just the only example that came to mind) lol

Does your own intolerance bother you or just the intolerance of others?

And by 'truth' do you mean some absolute, irrefutable truth or your personal opinion?

Truthfully,  this entire thread has me confused,  I am thinking there is an undercurrent between some of those posting.

I want to add my 2 cents though, cause I am always right and what I say is The Truth.

If everyone were honest and cared about humankind they could be sensitivly truthful.  For example "does this make me look fat"  answer is obviously yes, however a better more kind response would be,  I like you in the other outfit better.

There are those individuals who hold themselves up to being honest and truthful yet are really just cold and heartless.

There are also those individuals who really really believe what they say is the absolute truth, that is wonderful for them,  I live my own life however and have a strong enough self esteem to have my own opinions.  I am also intelligent enough when I ask for opinions to take those that are offered and formulate my own based not only on the opinions expressed but the research I do on my own.

In society there will always be mean intolerant cruel and unhealthy individuals.  It is up to each to find the indiviudal or group who fit what they are looking for.  Not everyone fits everyones mold

Perhaps what we each believe to be true, in in fact our own reality... ?
