I've always really liked the 3-4 - It deals with gambling and great athleticism. The Steelers and Patriots have always done a good job utilizing it.

Just my opinion.... While most would say fast linebackers with good coverage ability are what make up a great 3- 4, I would say the key is a huge, fast nose tackle that's a threat to defeat the double team most of time. Then, one of your more athletic linebackers suited for coverage can line up in the slot and either rush the passer or drop into coverage if there's play action or the halfback comes up field as a receiver.

This year Penn State has gone to what looks like a 3-4 -- they moved their fastest LB over to a DE position and he always rushes from a standing position, or sometimes drops back into coverage. They don't have the typical monster nose tackle (except for a 340 lb freshman who is red shirting this year), and this move was probably driven by the fact that they are deep with good LBs but thin at DE except for more freshmen. . . they couldn't go out into the free agent market because they don't recruit JUCO players.

LOL R.......... excellent job. I always liked how the Saints would take a DL out in passing situations, and use Rickey Jackson and Pat Swilling as ends.... showed great flexibility.
 
I tend to think a 4-3 is easier to run, but with all things being equal, a 3-4 would be a tougher D.
