dicipline2 -> Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (9/29/2006 11:10:14 PM)

Not long ago when I was younger and did not have internet access, I had become interested in BDSM. One of the few sources avialiable to me at the time was Television.

One night I flip it to USA and "Exit to Eden" was playing....aside from the fact that  I was glued to the television, I was somewhat surprised that a show was playing on TV that had such a "taboo" theme. (it was actually banned in a part of canada.)

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie and recently I was doing resarch about the movie and found out it had one time been based on a book written by Anne Rice! At the time I was unaware of the sleeping beauty series and thought she was strictly a vampire/horror type writer. I noticed later that BDSM was sometimes a theme in her vampire books (if you look closely in the begining of the movie  "queen of the damned" you see a dummy with bondage gear).

So I ran out and bought this book at a borders store and needless to say I was already embarassed bringing a pink book to the counter muchless when the attractive cashier began questioning me about it, lol.  I am glad I did buy the book because it was truly terrific.

Has anyone else read it? what did you think?

Also, I cant seem to find Exit to Eden on DVD even though it was released in 2004 on DVD. I keep finding sites that say it was discontinued for some reason. Granted it was not nearly the caliber the book was and I believe it was an attempt to make BDSM more palatable to the general public but it was still a decent movie...does anyone know why it was discontinued?

Yes, the book was wonderful.  I read the book prior to the production of the movie, and of course was hoping the movie would be 'true' to the book.  It ended up not being a replica to the book, but that is to be expected, I suppose.  The movie wasn't 'bad', just a little disappointing.

I own the DVD, but I'm thinking I got it some time ago.  I didn't know it had been discontinued.  You might check Amazon to see if one of their auxiliary vendors have them.  You could always check on Ebay from time to time.  You can post a thread here on CM to see if someone wants to sell theirs.

No, I don't.  Well, there must be 'some' price I could dream up.

Jeff

MisPandora -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (9/30/2006 7:17:15 AM)

The book was ok.  Clearly not one of Anne Rice's best....but palatable if you were grasping at kinky things to read from the male submissive perspective.

The movie?  Atrocious.  The only amusing line was "Go paint my house" that Rosie spat at one of the boys.....it comes in handy with the online trolls who want to blindly serve.

You can buy the movie new and used through resellers off Amazon.  There's also 52 reviews on the movie, most of which are terrible!  http://www.amazon.com/Exit-Eden-Dan-Aykroyd/dp/B00005Y6YE

The IMDb database has alot of info on the movie itself, including the Canadian debacle (only a week long ban, and what most presume to be a mistake given the leniency of the Canadian government): http://imdb.com/title/tt0109758/

Not included in their trivia is the fact that Dana Delaney's (Mistress Lisa) whips were made by Janette Heartwood, the original owner of Heartwoodwhips.com, now owned by The Toybag of Herndon, VA.

And another interesting bit -- Paul Mercurio (Elliott) played the male lead in a similar sex drama filmed in 1998 that winds up in New Orleans.  The title: The First 9 1/2 Weeks.

I read the book well before the movie came out. I enjoyed the book as well as most everything written by Anne Rice. The found humor in the movie. Was so campy I was howling with laughter.

First the book is very different from the movie -- very very very different.

I frankly didn't like the violence in the book, I think the idea that two people could arrange for or actually rape each other then fall in love is BS and a very bad idea to promote. We have so many myths in our culture that promote rape and sexual violence (not BDSM but violence and assault).

I also dislike the negativity of the idea that somehow SM and love are not very compatible -- the movie has a much happier ending in this regard.

While the moive has problems (such as leaving out the consent part of SSC -- the most important part in my opinion) and silliness I did like it better than the book for the above reasons.

yes the book is VERY different from the movie...I actually only got to see the movie from the part where she is at Halifax's and she decides to become a domme. From what I saw and from what I read in the book was very different. I was disappointed that the movie didnt follow the book.

I did take a step back when she forced anal on him....it was rather shocking a woman would write something like that. She was very rough with him....although I cant say that was an absolute turnoff for me but nonetheless it was quite shocking.

I think in a way, a turning point in the book is where she decides to have elliot whipped and he begs her to remove the blindfold. He tells her he can bear everything else but begs her to please not to blindfold him. When she has him back in the room she begins to fear that she was breaking him and I got the distinct feeling she couldnt bear to do that to someone she might actually love.

Very touching....I think that was the turning point in the book from her infatuation/teasing him to actually begining to love him.

I am a softie though and I love stories where love works even against all odds. Seriously, how likely is it that a nobody slave comes to an island and just so happens the head Mistress is interested in him? and more than that falls in love with him.

I didnt get to see the end of the movie, do they marry as in the book?

I wonder why so many folks forget that in the book not only does she arrange for him to be raped but he rapes her. I found it to be unacceptable.

In the movie they get engaged back on the island and there is not doubt that she will remain the head mistress there -- the book is not clear on this at all and requires a lot of close reading. I think the book sends a much more negative message about BDSM than the movie does.

LotusSong -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/1/2006 10:19:24 AM)

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this movie. When I first told my husband of my interest in D/s he was a tad shocked..  Then the next time he went to pick us up a movie at the rental- he brought home this one.  And it was all I could do to stifle my smile that crept creeping across my face :)  By this gesture, he told me he understood without saying a word :)

I LOVED the spanking scene with Delaney and the Aussie guy. I can't remember his name..but I do recall his butt :)  I loved her style.  That quiet strength.

It is my opinion, that this movie is a nice one to open a non-threatening discussion of the lifestyle with your vanilla spouse/SO.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/1/2006 10:52:38 AM)

I just bought the DVD the end of last year.  My friend who works at Blockbuster ordered it for me for $15.00, brand new.

I hear that the book is better than the movie, so I need to buy the book now.  [:)]

Dang you bought it brand new? I need to find a place to order it but I did nopt know you could order it from blockbuster...

The book is very good....but I dont remember any part where he rapes her...and what she does to him isnt what I wouldnt classify as "rape".  He does make his advances towards her, but I dont remember getting the feeling he was raping her. She did tell him to "not make this a rape" when she uses the strange phallus on him. Remember he did come to the island as a slave and ended up her slave. lol.

He does do this in the arena with the other man *shudders a bit* and calls it "rape without guilt". That was kind of a yucky part in the book strictly because I am hetereo...

I really enjoyed the book....the latter half of the book does not have very many S&M events though.....this part is mostly them going to dances and other things and talking while trying to avoid the Clubs attempts to figure out what was going on. You definately got a feeling of 'impending doom' in this part of the book. As if they would drag elliot back to the club.

They just threaten to ban him lol.....

beltainefaerie -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/18/2006 12:36:19 AM)

I love all Anne rice books and I liked Exit to Eden, but did not enjoy it nearly as much as the Beauty series.

Incidentally as it relates to the "rape", regardless of how we choose to take it as it is written, it is fantasy.  Many erotic novels of the BDSM variety include rape and/or torture that none of us would engage in or condone in real life.  It is fantasy and plenty of people have rape fantasies.
However, that said, when I tried to read the Beauty series to my husband, he couldn't get past the fact that she was "raped" awake.  As it was fantasy, and the manner in which it was delivered, it hadn't even occurred to me that that was true.  I was lost in the complete dominance and rugged sexuality of the scene and had not thought of consent at all.  Just my 2 cents.  So, to each there own.  I get why that part would disturb people, but I also understand that in a fictional context it was erotic to me.

LadySeraphina -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/18/2006 1:07:42 AM)

It's really important, both in Exit to Eden and the Beauty series, to remember that it IS fiction. It's no more real than a piece of vanilla erotica where a hot cable guy shows up and the bored, scantily clad housewife unties her robe. I do see how the lack of explicit consent can be upsetting, but remember that she is writing to an audience of BDSM lovers, so she wants to push our buttons. I think in Eden it's even more clear than in Beauty that people are consenting, but even if it wasn't, this is the same writer who created a universe with vampires. (Also a woman who is now a born-again bible-thumper.)

Personally, I found both Exit to Eden (the novel) and the Beauty series highly erotic. Of course, I write my own erotica, most of which I do not want to live out either - it's just a fantasy.

Just my opinion.

I have no problem with rape fantasies and rape scenarios in fiction.

I do have a problem when that scenario leads to romance repeatedly in a writer's work. That gets me thinking that the author believes that rape will lead to love. While we all may be able to tell the difference but not everyone can. An author has no control over what her audience gets from her work but for me at least I do try to be some what realistic in the fiction I write.

Yes, I too liked her quiet strength.  I am not some yelling psycho over demaning biatch of a woman, and I wont' pretend I am for someone's fantasy.  If a guy likes her style, then he'll usually like mine *grin*

Of course a session here or there to let the inner beast out on some begging little pain slut is nice too..... *wink*

littlesarbonn -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/18/2006 10:57:12 AM)

I read the book long before the movie was made, and when I heard they were making the movie with Dana Delaney as the Mistress, I was extremely excited. The scenes with her were great. The rest of the movie was so-so and filled with the usual "hey, look, it's a taboo subject and we're going to make jokes about it" context. But I watched it mainly for the moments that intrigued me in the book, and I was (and still am) completely enamored with Dana Delaney.

I really wish they could have done an independent movie without the "fantasy island" stuff they were trying to play into the movie that was more fluff than anything else. An island where they would welcome such a lifestyle became a fantasy for me after reading that book, but it most certainly was not the "fantasy" island they created in that movie, which was more like a club I'd expect to find Paris Hilton in than Mistress Lisa.

johnsteed2 -> RE: Exit to Eden....Wonderful book (10/19/2006 8:54:15 PM)

I really, really, really liked the beginning of the book. But I didn't like the second part. It seemed to say to me that female domination was not compatible with normal human romance and love.

The movie was attrocious. Whomever hired / forced Garry Marshall to intro the comedy bits was an idiot. Dan Aykroyd I love; not here. Rosie O'Donnell?!?!?!?

Iman was nice eye candy if plastic acting.

The book is better than the movie by far. Worth reading. But I still don't like the ending.
