Ah! The first rhetorical use of images here (that I've seen, anyway)!

Well done.

I've always liked Ambrose Bierce's definition of freemasonry in The Devil's Dictionary:
quote:

An order with secret rites, grotesque ceremonies and fantastic costumes, which originating in the reign of Charles II among working artisans of London, has been joined successively by the dead of past centuries in unbroken retrogression until it now embraces all the generations of man on the hither side of Adam and is drumming up distinguished recruits among the pre-Creational inhabitants of chaos and the formless void. The order was founded at different times by Charlemagne, Julius Caesar, Cyrus, Solomon, Zoroaster, Confuscius, Thothmes, and Bhudda. Its emblems and symbols have been found in the catacombs of Paris and Rome, on the stones of the parthenon and the Chinese great wall, among the temples of Karnak and Palmyra, and in the Egyptian pyramids — always by a Freemason.

As long as we are resurrecting the undead- a little red meat for the conspiracy zombies:

The 6 degrees of Fremasonry:
The Freemasons originated in Egypt under the Pharoahs;
Rome conquered Egypt;
The Pope is the head of the Roman Church;
Catholic missionaries traveled to Kenya to make converts;
One of those converts was a Mr. Barack Obama Sr.
Barack Obama is a Kenyan Devil-worshipping Catholic Freemason!!!

Feel free to try your hand at this; extra points for working in Saul Alinsky, Chairman Mao, or Kevin Bacon

There are 33 degrees:

ranging from 'Entered apprentice (1st degree)' to 'Sovereign grand inspector general (33rd degree)' I was lead to believe.

The fact you think there are only six clearly shows you haven’t achieved zeroth degree status yet.[;)]

ancient Khazar Empire,

any mention of it?

Moonhead -> RE: The history of mankind (10/31/2009 12:59:54 PM)

Yes: it was in Star Trek.

DesFIP -> RE: The history of mankind (10/31/2009 1:31:32 PM)

Khazaria was a Jewish kingdom some hundreds of years ago.
Michael Chabon wrote a tour de force located there in his Gentlemen of the Road. Well worth reading.

Info on Khazaria itself? This site looked promising, http://www.khazaria.com/

I do believe he meant 6 degrees as in 6 degrees of separation [;)]

Louve00 -> RE: The history of mankind (10/31/2009 3:03:36 PM)

I saw a show about Templars and Freemasons on the History Channel not too long ago

http://www.history.com/encyclopedia.do?articleId=213966

From my understanding.  The Catholic Church supported the Templars...mainly because Templars had/found/managed ways to make large sums of money (in fact, its said that Templars were the first to create a banking system at all).  Catholics also supported the Templars because they believed the Templars knew the where-abouts of possessions that were valuable to the church.  To make a long story short, King Edward II in France owed the Templars alot of money.  Instead of paying his debt, he (with the knowledge of the French Catholic church) concocted a way to gather all Templar Knights and kill them off (with the blessing of the Church, btw).  Despite vigourous searches, when the Templars were killed, not much of their fortune was found.  Somewhere, somehow (either I didn't pay close enough attention, or it just wasn't stated clearly) the Freemasons were in place.  Their secretness of their society, without the backing of the church, led many to believe it was of a demonic nature.  That is speculism though, and their is no proof of that.

My husband is a Freemason today.  They are still secretive.  They do though, have societies they adjoin with.  The Order of the Eastern Star is an affliliation of women who have husbands that are Freemasons.  (Or at least The Order of the Eastern Star down here are all wives of Freemasons.)

Lots of people find this interesting. Um Dan Brown the Divinci code. Yes embellished truth but he was getting at something bigger.

Or possibly just regurgitating The Holy Blood And The Holy Grail for an audience who weren't reading crypto historical blockbusters back in the '80s, perhaps?

I think the best piece of fiction I've seen about the Templars (as opposed to the Masons, who use a lot of the same imagery) was in Alan Moore's novel Voice Of The Fire. One of the chapters deals with a landowner whose building a church in the round, and is heavily concerned with what he saw during the crusades. It's a very clever story, and far nastier than the sub Dennis Wheatley stuff that normally gets applied to the Templars.
