I have found this to be the case as well. Long ago, I was very polite and conscientuous and replied to each and every e-mail I received. In appreciation of my efforts, what I often got in return was an abusive tirade.
Another thing that often happens is that the person takes any reply, even a polite "no thank you," as a sign of interest. They then launch into super-salesman mode and try to overcome whatever objection I stated as a reason for not being interested in them. I have done a lot of soul-searching and have a very good idea of what I am looking for, so I really don't have time for this.
The guidelines are very clearly laid out in My profile as to what I am and am not looking for, so if someone doesn't take the time to read it, I don't take the time to reply to them. 90% of the time, the respondent is clearly outside the guidelines for one reason or other. The 10% who do read my profile and meet the guidelines generally do get a response back.
