I prefer to make My own. It is almost as if I am making a gift for My submissive. More personal and I can also make whatever it is too suit the size and flexability of My sub.

It's a very nice feeling when your Master makes a scourge 'specially for you :D

dragonofjapan -> RE: Make or buy them? (5/18/2005 6:52:37 AM)

I enjoy construction. I build houses as a hobby. I love to build in useful items and make them blend decoratively.

When in Japan my wife wanted to try suspension, unfortunately the house we lived in had nothing to attach to, so I built a frame from angle iron which could be bolted together in a few minutes.

I have ordered subs to "make" some of the things they would have used on them.

Nothing nicer than to send a sub out to cut a switch.

However, I love taking a sub into a store. My nicest experience was at Abecrombie in the 70's, before it became the store of the over-petulant. When I saw the same thing reproduced in 9 1/2 Weeks, I wondered where it came from. But we added a bit and bridle to our purchase as well.

I find making has some clear advantages. First of course is cost, but often it is quality. A year or two ago, I lost a great deal of very high quality equipment after a robbery at my home. I replaced a few things using on line stores and was shocked at the lack of quality. High quality items seem outrageously priced, and often hard to tell if you ARE going to get high quality even if you pay the price.

And as someone pointed out, so much fun to discuss with your sub some potential items. Love to see the squirm.

DrkAngl -> RE: Make or buy them? (5/18/2005 7:40:36 AM)

I had an idea yesterday, one that I might try sometime.

Take the soft clear vinyl that you can cheaply buy at Walmart, cut it into strips (whatever size that suits you. I perfer small sized strips), then bind the ends together. After that, attach to a handle, or merely wrap the end with Duct tape. Simple flogger.

You could also do this with fabric too. Depending on the effects you wanted. hmm...for that matter, the leather strips people get for necklaces would work too. [:)]

hmm...another is an ice "dildo" Those are easy enough to make. Simple fill a condom with water, tie off the end so the water doesn't leak out, and freeze. When frozen, you can either leave it in the condom, or take it out of the condom. Also, if it's not quite the size you need you can always run it under hot water. That will also melt off any rough edges that might harm your sub or slave.

DrkAngl -> RE: Make or buy them? (5/18/2005 7:46:02 AM)

I'll repost these from my other thread. [:)]

I've found a modeling compound called Friendly Plastic to be a very useful thing. After you melt the pellets you can sculpt it into almost anything you can think of. Merely put it into cold water for it to cool and harden. If you make a mistake, or get tired of it, merely put it back in boiling hot water and start over. It's very hard when cooled. It makes dildos fairly well as well as other things.

Another favorite of mine is PVC pipe. It's inexpensive and you can construct almost anything with it.

My late husband loved Vinyl, so I found some clear seethrough vinyl at our local Walmart. It was easy to sew and made a good pair of seethrough pants. I also made him a harness and collar as well. I made a small flogger for me to use. :)

Liquid Latex is fun to play with as well. I used to make theatrical masks for costumes. I found that if you poured the liquid latex into a cheap baking pan with sides, that when it cures you can cut it into strips. After they finish totally curing, you powder the ends of the strips and tie the other ends together to make a flogger. The unpowdered ends stick together well.

Ok, Things I've done so far, vanilla style.

1) made a pipeline to fill up my son's blow up pool during the summer. Why? Because the apartment complex we live in doesn't have outside the apartment. It worked very well. I attached it to the sink spicket.

2) A child's pipe construction set. Lowes, our local hardware store, cut the pipes up in the size I requested. This service is normally free. Then I merely purchased the pipe connectors. A very cheap building set. Just make sure you check all the pipe ends and sandpaper off any rough edges.

Something I saw at Walmart

If you look in the kid's section of Walmart, chances are you may have seen the "ball cage" there. It's very simple, thick pipe, and some bungy cords. They use them to hold basket balls, children's play balls, etc. I've even seen them hold stuffed animals.

Vanilla things I've made "blueprints" for, but haven't made, YET

When I was teaching preschool, I drew up a version of a ballpit. I had been talking to the director about making one for out classroom, but unfortunately, it never was done.

Anyways, my idea was to use PVC pipe, the connectors, and netting style material that can usually buy at your local fabric store. You simply construct a square, or rectangle, and then the netted fabric can be attatched to the sides to create walls so the balls don't go everywhere.

Non vanilla ideas

Someone had posted once about a cheap version of a cage. That would be easy enough to make up using PVC pipe. That would also depend on how strong you want the cage to be. If you have a sub or slave that doesn't rattle the cage too much, then the cheap 1 to 1/2 inch pipe would do.

If you needed a really strong cage, then the more expensive metal pipes would work as well with the right connectors.

Spacing bars
You could use the PVC to make inexpensive spacer bars. If you wanted them really strong, then you'd probably have to go with slightly thicker pipe.

I'll post the other ideas as soon as I recall them.

Here is the search result thatlists different things URLS of things you can make with PVC.

Almost forgot. When I was teaching, another teacher made a wonderful item called a "Plastic Bubble". It was very simple to make as well as use. The kid's loved it.

You need very heavy plastic for this and a decient sized fan. You'll also need duct tape. Sharp scissors are needed too.

She first constructed a tube by taping the plastic together. This tube will be attached to the fan in order to blow up the "room". She merely took the face part off the fan and then tapped on the plastic. There are other ways of doing it as well.

Anyways, She taped the plastic into a large square or rectangle bubble. She then taped that to the long tube she'd made first.

Next, you blow it up using the fan. Once filled you need to cut a small door for the person to enter. Always keep the fan going or the room will collapse.

Her's was made of clear plastic found at your local hardware store's gardening center, but you could use the solid black plastic as well. Just be aware of the outside temperature. You don't want anyone over heating.

I'm sure there are many things you could think of to use this bubble style cage

NickInSLC -> RE: Make or buy them? (8/15/2005 1:11:27 AM)

Well, I'm not exactly a Dom, but I do make the large majority of my own toys. I buy my rope, and specific toys when I find something quality that I don't feel like learning to build myself.

For the most part, I make things because I know I'll do better work than 99.9% of the people out there. I also feel like something is far more personal when I've made it with my own hands. And I'll confess, my ego really enjoys the stroking from showing off my work.

But, there's also cost. I can buy a mediocre flogger for $100 to $200, or, for $50 - $70 bucks in materials, I can build my own that would cost $250 or more if anybody out there even made anything the same quality.

A few months ago, a friend and I started our own toy company, so I've pretty much left the ranks of do it yourselfers. But that is how I got started. And even if you have no intention of becoming a professional toy maker, most of us can build far better toys than we can buy.

Just for kicks, here's a picture of one of my recent peices.

minxmaze -> RE: Make or buy them? (8/16/2005 3:40:05 AM)

Making your own, yeah it's cheaper, but to me it's more it gonna be on me, so its gonna fit me.

I have spent good money on toys, and found I spent more in time trying to care for them made up than I would have if I just made it myself, oiling, and adding stress sewing to things for longer life is just faster if done at time of making than trying to do it after.

I can add the extras at no extra, a jump ring or a extra link makes all the differance but something you just can't get off the "rack"

Making myself and knowing He picks up my arts to store bought things, yummy, and evil all in one, gotta love the twofers!

anyone got some good ideas on making insertables? i have myself done it with the help of a "turntable" and sticks of wood covered with condoms or balloons. (turntable= workshop tool that can spin wood or metal, just don't know the english word)

sultryvoice -> RE: Make or buy them? (8/16/2005 7:36:01 PM)

I love to make all kinds of things..I am very creative <art degree> and I am perverse and a sadist..You might as well throw in masochist and a few other "choice" things. I have made floggers out of all kinds of materials, paddles. I tried to learn to braid but I just couldn't get it.. I made 2 elk floggers using copper pipe for the handles..Using the fine steel wool to buff it up then coat it with a spray sealer..I have gotten more compliments on those..Always seaching for new things..

The ones I've seen at Harbor freight use a safety guard.. this sometimes makes it hard to get the shock your looking for.. I suggest you look for one that has no safety guard.

That "safety" guard can be removed in less than a minute with a pair of diagonal cutters.

The safety guard on the ones I've seen is needed for conductivity.. You can remove it but depending on the design of the item, it may result in a non-functioning electric fly swatter.

It'll be interesting reading your replies.

I generally get the idea, but have b.b girl do the work.
she has made ball gags,3 spreader bars(1 steel 2 wood) they can be used either hanging or not,she also made a potty chair(the one you see on websites it has the steel pipe legs)its screwed to the floor for extra safety.I have made a flogger hurts worse than any other I have.I also made ball crusher type things using wooden dowels from any craft section, rubber bands on the ends works great, cut the dowels down and you can fit them on nipples.

MistressJadeMTL -> RE: Make or buy them? (9/26/2005 3:35:28 PM)

Actually, I just made two new toys for myself today as I was feeling a rather creative kinky mood...

The first toy I made is a rope flogger made out of a narrow white braided cord. It has a dozen falls, each with a knot on the end -- to give it a fair bite. The flogger was made by folding the cording in half over the end of a smaller dowel, with a metal ring tucked under the end. The cords were carefully run parallel to the dowel, with a large elastic at either end to keep it taut. The the whole thing was wrapped tightly in white gun/duct tape several times and trimmed.

While not exactly the most elegant of tools, it does fit several of my criteria. I have very small hands and most off-the-rack toys are too big to handle comfortably, or are too heavy for any extended play sessions. I purposely gave it a longer handle in order to make a longer extension of my arm; again for more bite for the buck with less energy expended. I also wanted an all-white toy, as most of mine are black and it does stand out nicely in the darkened atmospheres of some of the clubs I attend.

The second is a heavy black rope loop, bent in half and secured into a stiff handle, with the help of some chopsticks and black gun/duct tape. Again, not ready for retail sale but it fits my needs in terms of size and weight.

Once I experiment with these, I will also be better able to figure out what works best for me... and keep my budget for things like beautiful leather corsets, which I can't make myself!
