pahunkboy -> PANIC! moving maybe help (10/3/2006 4:41:19 AM)

Hy friends- im so jittery i had to pop a valium.

the day is materializing that i wll have to move.
my family wont be supportive here-

i want to go to western PA, but only when i must move from here. i dont know enuff about the areas there.

jenn said she would go w me oevernight to look around

jim tells me the winters tehre are bad, and i should stay local even tho he will move to lewsitown 1 hour away when he retires.

the good news is ild be allowed to finish out my lease.

bad news is i might not be able to take my dog,.

my back has 4 herniated disks- so i cant lift.

also- im not really sure what town- what type of dwelling. ild love 4-10 acres.

the new owner probaly would play ball with me...but the costs would be so high i could own a modest place.

how would you size up a new region?
what do you look for in housing?

The winters here arent any worse than they were when I lived in Baltimore. You get more snow, yeah, but no more major storms than further East and the people here are used to it so they don't act like morons the minute a snowflake hits their windshield.

Id see if there is some kind of organization in the new area that involves whatever you do for a living and see if you can network and find people who are friendly enough to show you the ropes. It does help if you have a contact person who knows the ins and outs of the area.

Also, depending on what you do for a living or what skills you have, you might be able to set up a bartering arrangement with some people with healthy backs...you would do whatever it is you do best for them and they would help you move on the big day. Figure out the value of what you do and what people like "College Movers" pay their folks an hour and trade accordingly. Promising to feed them (breakfast, lunch and dinner if it's going to be a long day) on moving day helps too.

Erie is a nice area. I grew up on the Atlantic Coast and I never had any experiences with life near a large lake until about a year ago...and I have to say I really really like being close to a Great Lake...so if you can find work in the Erie region, I think you would find the area very nice, with not-too-high property costs. Of course, there is still all the high taxation and red tape associated with living in PA, but you're used to that already.

I think if you get your own place, you should be able to keep your dog too :-). Keep thinking positively.

Best of luck to you!

The winters can be bad, but would you rather live without changing seasons?  That would be boring.  If you choose to live here you will have to shovel snow, that's a fact.  Most areas are prepared to remove snow and there's rarely weather so bad that you are stranded.  Also you will enjoy beautiful summers, to me it's well worth it.  Good luck!

edit to add that Heather is correct.  In my neighborhood people are always helping each other.  I think you could barter something for snow removal or pay a small fee and have school kids do it for you.

You have a chance to move and you're moving to Western Penn.?
Why not move down South?
I moved here to Myrtle Beach,S.C. two years ago from New Hampshire to get away from the severe winters and high housing costs of the North East and I love it down here!
I bought two condos brandnew, preconstruction for under $200k, 3 b/r 2 baths on a golf course.(One for $84,600 the other $97k) One is rented out.
The same condos in N.H. would cost $250-$300k plus the yearly taxes on them would be $5,000.
My heat/electric in Jan runs me about $85.
Elec in July w/ a/c is $60.
Taxes for this place are $469 per year.
My mortgage payment is $327.
The beach is 12 minutes away.
Airport, gigantic Mall 20 minutes away.
All kinds of restaurants close to here.
I did most of my research and business on-line, flew down and made a deposit and stayed for two weeks vacation and to drive around and get familiar with the area.
Loaded my stuff into a big truck in N.H. with kids who lived there and payed them $40 each.
When I got here I went to a local day labor pool and got 4 guys and everything was done in about 4 hours, set up ready to go.
I paid a friend $750 to help load/unload /drive the truck and he drove it back to N.H. to avoid " "One Way Charges" which are much more expensive that pick up and drop off at the same location charges.
I drove my own vehicle here followed by my friend in the rental.
You can find out a lot of info online.

hi Popeye.

your monthly payment and taxes are doable. however my budget is 15k,30k,40k, at the most 60k.

locally places at 30-40k are a tear down.

Pennsylvania is a commenwealth. There are 4 in the USA.  Due to health insurance, and various other programs... my main permanent residence must be in PA.  My grandparents used to close up their house and go to FL- they stayed at a retirement campground. For the cost it woulod cost to heat thier large home- the went south.

My last 3 surgeries were paid for in full. Once im planted- certainly I could travel.

http://www.housingauthority.com/ <---this county has cool programs.

I dont want to have to get a room mate. Ild rather buy a cheap house and own it- instead of the bank owning it.

last time i moved i hired 2 men from teh homeless shelter to help out.

i should do like u did and go in person and see with my own eyes what the area is.

ild like a quiet neighborhood. hell-

Well, you wouldn't get much here for $60k, those condos are now going for $160k.
But, you're always better off owning than paying rent that just gets flushed every month.
We have a lot of people moving here from up North and believe it or not, Florida now. The ones I've talked to say Florida is "too hot, too expensive just like up North, and too many hurricanes."
Yeah, take a look around first.
I flew down here for two weeks, stayed in a condo and rented a car and drove all over for two weeks.
Me and the Realtor whoI contacted online took a ride here to check out the condos being built and the area as well.
We met with the Realtor selling these condos and I gave him a check and picked out carpeting, flooring, colors, and cabinets and I moved in 4 months later.
