My mom heard some republicans on the idiot box explaining that it was really the Democrats fault that Foley was not exposed earlier because they knew all about it and were waiting until right before the election to come forward....omg... too much

Was there a bit of "October Surprize", possibly the timming is suspicious to say the least. The issue is getting muddied up with politics on both sides. The story as best I have read/heard so far is, Foley did certainly write stuff that warrants him being removed, had he not resigned already. I have no doubt and accept no excuse for his taking action towards sexual contact with an underaged page reguardless of gender. Alcoholism, molestation, being gay, Bah spin and a poor attempt at claiming victimhood rather than a serious appology and acceptance of responsibility for his actions. Hassert knew about the E-mails (not the sexualy charged IM's) the situation was reported and investigated. They were deemed as odd and out of bounds but nothing that would make even a good story in the various news stories that were not run even though the investigation was somewhat open to the media. The distinction is certainly worth making and taking into account when speaking on the issue.

Take a chill pill julia my not agreeing in lock step isn't excusing anything. The messages here are in two sctions of time and wrongness. I'm simply reserving judgement until I get more actual information Best of what I can ell now, The first set of messages, while a bit odd, inappropriate and against the basic rules of no contact outside of work (or after they leave), was not sexual and resulted in an investigation where Foley as slapped on the wrist and told "NO NO you can't do that".(these are the ones Hassert mentions having seen) The later setof IM's was more explicit, and those are the set I still want to know who knew when and no evidence has been supplied as to that question as yet. When we get actual information rather than accusations and inferences that ___________ knew about "it" with some detail as to what the "it" they knew was, then I'll make a more final judgement.

Elsewhere I have noted that 16 years of age is apparently the age of consent in some places. Some cultures debut their young women into society at the age of 15. Shakespeare says Juliet was just 13 when her parents were trying to marry her off (fiction true, but I note it as a cultural reference actually taught in schools). To me it matters a lot if the supposed victim wants to step forward and be counted as a victim of abuse - otherwise that part of the issue is nonsense to me. I am not addressing the law, just my personal opinion. But... It doesn't let Republicans off the hook because it becomes a central issue of hypocrisy. It is they that encourage the extreme moral agenda of the Christian right and in my view they do so without any justification except the delusions of the Christian right-wingers. Republicans aren't in any way more moral than their Democratic opponents. Anyway, watching this Foley guy twist like a worm under media scrutiny is funny to me. In terms of politics this is a mere sideshow freak incident. We have real issues to base our votes on and this "predator" bullshit is very low on my agenda. I don't want children brutalized, but it's not my hot button issue at all. Squirm, Foley, squirm! Here's the story so far: [x] sexual behavior with a minor [x] gay sexual behavior [x] alcoholism [x] abuse from a clergyman [x] this is somehow Clinton's fault I think you have to be dead to think this isn't funny. It shows everything that is hilariously wrong with the morals, culture, media and politics in this country.

As for Foley he needs to squirm a bit, he resigned and that's about the best thing he did in the whole story. I find it disconcerting that I'm agreeing with Chaingang though so maybe I need to re examine my view, LOL The root issue for Foley is still the fact that he took action of a lacivous natue and had conversations of a sexual provocative boardering if not crossing the solicitation line. Since the resignation the rest of his excuses fall flat for me.

What we have is "the chickens coming home to roost" as the old folks say. The Republican Party is overloaded with hypocrites. How much time and money did we waste on Clinton's fiasco wth Monica? All of it for no reason but political gain, there was no other reason what so ever. There was nothing illegal that happened. Was it bad judgment and unethical? You bet, but it was not illegal and the whole show the Republican Party started should never have taken place. Now we have Mr Foley, who has violated several of the laws he actually helped get in place. Some of the messages contain things that when directed at a minor by an adulr or illegal. He has broken the law. Where is the investigation, where is the outrage and calls for justice and his arrest? Complaints of this being used for political gain, please many of the complainers helped write the book on how to do that. Well he resigned thats good enough, let him go, hush hush now. I think it is going to be hysterical when the pieces actually start falling on how much some of the Republican leaders knew. I firmly believe they knew a whole lot more than they want to admit. Least we forget Hassert originally tried to claim he knew nothing then when caught said "oh wait I knew this little bit". K

Someone is gonna bring it up sooner or later, what bearing do the former acts that recieved nothing but a censure vote ave on this event. (ie the 1984 case where the Democratic congressman flew his 16 year old page to europe and actually had sex with him admitted it and got censure and re elected.) Not as an excuse but as a precedent for the severity called for in the current case. Does it not smack of double standard to send this Republican to jail for E-mails with no physical contact (that we know of) while a censure vote was considered enough for a Demorate who had actual sex with a 16 year old page? BTW I'm not saying that the double standard makes Foley less guilty or anything like that, simply asking that this concept be examined.

Archer: Just admit you watch Faux News. It is now pointedly obvious. I saw that segment too. Hannity or whatever... The difference is that when I watched it, I realized it was bullshit on both sides. That doesn't stop or justify Republican hypocrisy. And you have to agree that Democrats are far less fatuous on these kinds of issues. Democrats not only know that real people have real sex, my usual assumption is that they don't care that much either way. The Republicans try to pretend they live in ultra-moral land instead. Pointing out the hypocrisy of others is not itself an act involving hypocrisy.

Actually it was on Brit Hume's show which is far less commentary and more news, but yes I watch Fox news, it's not my only news source on TV I'll watch MSNBC Chris Mathews Hardball for commentary sometimes as well. But hen again I'm not under the impression that News and Commentary are the same thing.

K Playfulone, ah....there was something very illegal about what Clinton did; he lied UNDER OATH about it. You or I would go to prison for that! And he was Impeached by the House of Representatives for it. I don't think it's right for anyone in public office to use their position to take advantage of another person sexually but that's just me.
