Okay this thread is for other martial artists on the forums.

Now I know Las Vegas is quickly becoming one of if not the center for combat sports and martial arts as a whole for the united states, well I decided to put myself back into formal training after a 3 month hiatus and i've always wanted to start studying Filipino Arts and throw in some Silat to round out what I already have, (dont worry y'all I'm very well versed in the "empty your cup" philosophy, not like i'm a newbie)

Anyway, the closest place to me has only three classes a week, which i'm not too fond of, i'm the type to practically live at any studio I go to, but the biggest hurdle is that  for only this it costs 135 bucks a month. When I was with USSD (before they became all "bunkai" crazy...ugghhh) They where pretty expensive where I was paying 200 or over a month and I had a bunch of group classes during the week and plenty of private lessons to keep me satisfied.

So for where you guys live, how much a month do you pay for something comparable to what the FMA place offers?

My brazillian ju-jitsu studio costs me 88$ per month with classes 6 days a week, 2 hours every day. We also have over 800 sq ft of mat area... We have a weight room, heavy bags, and and supervised training area open 7 days per week with options for private lessons at a pretty cheap rate.

Hey I'm thinking of taking Brazilian Ju Jitsu.  I heard it's a great self defense for women.

To be honost I wouldent recommend it for self defense, I took it simply so my groundfighting skills would have more of a leg to stand on in addition to Aikido.

If you want self defense go for Krav Maga some places that offer it also offer specilized self defense courses for women.

Have you ever heard of Haganah?  There's a place by me that offers courses in it.  They call it Fight...Fierce Israeli Guerilla Hand to Hand Tactics.  Debating that also.

Is it?  Silly me.  I always thought that ground tactics were better for women since if we're attacked we usually get taken to the ground just by strength.

I would recommend for women's self defense that you find a Model Mugging or Impact Personal Safety variant in your neighborhood.

I have done half a dozen or more martial arts.  The best deal I got was at my old Hapkido Studio.  $50 a month.  I could go whenever I wanted, but they made me teach 3 classes a week.

I paid $120 a month to learn Aikido, but that was in Colorado.

About $100 a month for Jiu Jutsu in the high desert.

I learned Arnis behind the chemistry building in college.  That was free.

I studied Shotokan in college.  That was free.  But I was studying Hapkido at the same time.

I studied Kung Fu in Nebraska.  That was a mat fee of $6 day.  I was there for 3 months working.

I used to go hang out at my buddies Kung Fu studio here in town to spar.  The Sifu didnt mind me being there as a beat-up target.  That was fun.

There have been others.

......Yep, Vegas is definitly a rip off convention for martial artists.

for the ones that where 100 bucks and over, how often where you able to go to the dojo?

The Jiu Jutsu studio was a block from my house, standing room only, and I could go any night I wanted to for my nightly beatings.

The Aikido studio was only open MWF for 2 hours.

The Hapkido studio was probably $40-$50 / night you planned to go in a month.  So those students who went 5 nights a week paid $200 or so.

I adore BJJ as a self defense tactic, but thats because my instructor is a bit loopy. It really isn't uncommon to hear something like "now class, if this hold wont work for you in real life, try kneeing him in the kidneys a few times. Or theres always the knees." And should anyone be silly enough to give him a confused look, he very matter of factly explains that "People dont function well when their knees are bent 90 degrees in the wrong direction."  We get these pearls of wisdom on a daily basis, which maybe makes my class unique in its applications as far as self defense goes.

In Winnipeg and Calgary, Canada, I took Shotokan karate. The cost here was still under $100 a month a year ago?, and there are lots of classes throughout the week.
I found the quality of instruction to be high and well structured.
It isn't a place to buy your way to belts, or wear cool silky outfits. There is very little ritual. But respect to the instructor and your fellows is expected and enforced.

Dear RT-

I took Shotokan for ten bucks a night, in my Sensei's two car garage, which transform from a garage to a pretty nice dojo over the course of two years, due to students just showing up and building it better. for the major stuff, like the deck and the insulatation& sheet rock, we passed a hat. Some of the best training I ever had.

I think the most I ever paid was US$110.00/ a month for Aikido, in a really nice danceschool/ Aikiki.

Both of these were on Long Island, where things are pretty pricy...

Stay warm,
Lawrence

PS to the Jersey girl-

Take Shotokan, or some very ritualized angluar form for about a year, then switch to Aikido- after a year of that, go to something like Krav Maga, LINE, Tang Soo Do.

Slight hijack, brought on by thoughts of guns and yatta yatta. I read somewhere that women do better with martial arts like BJJ, Muai Thai, and Krav Maga, as opposed to TaeKwon-Do, boxing, and capoeria in terms of self defense. Before our resident god of martial artds jumps down my throat, I realize that capoeira is virtually useless as self defense for anyone. For those who couldnt care less about MA, capoeira is a very flashy art that looks a lot like break dancing if you dont know much about it, and originated on plantations as a way fro slaves to fight, and have their masters think they were dancing. The point of the article, is women will do better with martial arts that teach you to bring as much power in the shortest space possible, as opposed to martial arts which teach long extensions of the limbs. Similarly, a woman will do better with (for instance) a frying pan as a weapon, than a knife. I think the theory behind that is a guy can overpower a woman with a knife (usually), but no one likes getting in the way of a scared woman swinging a cast iron pan around. Thoughts?
