Sadly the Land of Fruits and Nuts has evidentially become overrun with right-wingers.  Today, a state appeals court upheld the ban on same sex marriage.  How sad.

Didn't your state of Ohio do the same in 2004?  I believe 38 states have this ban in place.

However, California does have a Domestic Partners Registry.  In fact, if you see the map linked below, you will see that California is one of the only states with Civil Union laws, while the majority of states in this country ban marriage without any sort of partnership rights (as I understand it).

You may want to rethink your position.

Glad I could help.  Seemed odd to criticize one of the only states actually something to help the cause.  Mind you it is slow movement, but movement none-the-less.

While i do appreciate the strides made in the Land of Fruits and Nuts, i still cannot understand why this country treats gay people as second class citizens.  Seems to me that gay marriage is the only realistic solution; otherwise, we will need a whole new court system & body of law for civil unions, etc.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the citizenry of those states which had this up for a vote overwhelmingly opposed it, as opposed to their governments making such decisions.  That's why California enacted the Domestic Partnership rights.  I don't think the opposition came only from the religious right sect; I believe it had more to do with "tradition" and the overwhelming percentage of voters NOT being gay.  It's a huge ship to turn around, and if it ever does completely turn, it is not likely to happen quickly.  Meanwhile, states like California, as well as some Eastern states, are indeed doing what they can to impose equal rights. As I understand it, gay couples in California now have the option of a domestic civil union, which entitles them to every civil right that a married couple can enjoy - other than a marriage certificate.  I believe the way to further this cause is to celebrate what has occurred, rather than critically focus on what has not.  It is good that you pointed to California, as it allowed our progress to be pointed out.  Perhaps other states will look into the Domestic Civil Union laws as the next logical step.  Any major change tends to require baby steps, as opposed to one massive leap.  Perhaps you could implore your fine state of Ohio to incorporate the same laws...?

I think that part of the reason it passed was because it was not a major election that this little gem was slipped in. What the Religious Right does is inflame their voting base to get them out and vote...they often slip crap like this on to ballets when it is not a major election year knowing that their base will show up just to vote for it.
