JerseyKrissi72 -> Thoughts On Organized Religion. (10/6/2006 9:09:51 AM)

I am a Methodist myself and attend church when I can which isn't every week and even sometimes only once a month..Alot of people like to pass judgement as if I HAVE to be in church every week to go to Heaven..I have four sons and it's not always that easy being ready at 9am for church..I was having breakfast in a diner and couldn't help but overhear this woman's conversation with a friend..she said "what is it you don't like about your church, is it the congregation?"  she replied "yes, i can't believe there are actually street people who come to our church now"..."street people, what do you mean"?..."homeless people, i was shocked that the pastor let them in".....i paid my bill and walked out, ashamed to say that I was a member of that church at one time....Unfortunately, that way of thinking is common within the church...almost as though you have to have a certain social status to attend church.....We are ALL God's people whether we are rich, poor....no matter..

I have an intense distaste for every organized religion I have been exposed to thusfar.

For Ron,

THBBBBBBBBBTTTT!!!!!![:D] better?

mnottertail -> RE: Thoughts On Organized Religion. (10/6/2006 9:23:06 AM)

And I couldn't have said it any better (but I could have spelled it better)

I am in agreement with LT.

Organized Religion is a group of people that wish to pray to God with people having similar interests and mindsets - that's all.

Some religions don't believe in drinking alcohol at all - it's what that group of people believe makes praying more comfortable for them.  Does the bible say drinking is prohibited?  No (In fact, Jesus turned water into wine for a friend's wedding reception)

If you base spirituality on religion, you're gonna go nuts.  Pray to God in the manner you see fit with the people you want to associate with.  God doesn't care if you dance or not, or drink or not, He just wants you to talk with Him on a personal level.

So, if you go to church and they want to smear peanut butter on their butts before praying, you have two choices ...  find a new place to go to church or grab a knife and start smearing ;-)

We Heathens doubt that Odin wants to hear plaintive cries or communications by supplication, He will chose it the other way--- who He decides to talk with on a personal level.

Organised religion is increasingly taking the form of big Corporate entities competing with each other for clients. The Catholic Church is abandoning the concept of limbo in a battle with Islam for hearts and minds in the developing world.

It is hard to take a belief system seriously when it changes its tune according to perceived security/insecurity.

Personally, it's not an issue for me. I'm not pro-religion or anti-religion. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter either way - there's bigger fish to fry on this planet without devoting time to a non specific deity.

i am just one of those P/pl who wants/needs/desires to belong to a recognised religion. i was born and raised as a Roman Catholic, and one of my regrets is that my long time alienation from the Church also meant i did not take my unmentionable to Religious Instruction.

i am at odds with many tenets of the Catholic Catechism, not to mention horrified by some of the Church's conduct.  i am considering converting to Judaism, but need to study up on it a bit more.

I have only been to one Methodist church, on invitation from a friend. I went dressed the way I normally dress... black tee shirt, jeans, and engineer boots. Got plenty of turned up noses at my attire. When the ordeal was over and I was climbing into my friends car, I casually mentioned that they would probably toss Jesus out on his ear were he to show up dressed in robes and sandals. He didn't appreciate the comment much, but oh well.

Limbo was never part of the catechism, it was a concept invented by lay people in the middleages, made famous in the modern era through the fame of Dante's Devine Comedy. However, it was never orthodox Catholic belief so Catholicism isn't abandoning it, just theologically disowning it.

That being said Islam, Christianity, Judeaism or whatever, are all delusional.

[:)]if sandals are okay with Jesus they are fine with me.....I go to church however i feel like dressing

i beg to differ, Sir.  Limbo was part of the Baltimore Catechism used prior to the big 1969 changes.  Not sure whether or not it appears in my 2005 edition, but haven't the willpower to finish reading it.

As for calling Christianity, Judaism and Islam delusional....while You are certainly welcome to conduct Your life as You see fit, i take a bit of umbrage at A/anyone insulting/dismissing/disrespecting my beliefs and the manner in which i choose to conduct my life.

Suit yourself but since all religions claim to be the truth and only one can be right, that makes all but one delusional.

"But limbo was an outdated concept which had never been part of Catholic dogma, ....”.

For me, this topic has good timing.

I don't know if you've ever had someone you love in the hospital, but those long, solitary drives home at night after the visits are a lot darker than the night. I rarely make it all the way to my car before becoming a waterfall. Last night when I got to the hospital, our parish priest was visiting my mom. I don't know him very well. I know he is Father Jim, but that's about it. He stayed all the way until closing, over two hours, and the four of us talked about all sorts of things. I could tell it comforted my mom to just have a normal conversation about normal things. He and my dad walked me to my car when we left. When we got to my car, he said that I should put the top down for the drive home and enjoy the beauty of the evening. I got my first good nights sleep in a week.

I guess it's easy to see all the bad things, but I'm thankful for one good one.

Most humans need organized religion.  Unfortunately, most
organized religions are based on a back of lies and religious
dogma.

mnottertail -> RE: Thoughts On Organized Religion. (10/6/2006 1:06:08 PM)

while on this subject, how is her progress?  And how are you and the rest of your family holding up?

Once again, i respectfully ask that posters W/who dislike/hate/don't understand organised religion take a breath and remember that T/their words may be insulting to T/those of U/us who are members/believers/in need.

She is doing better physically ... she can actually walk, using a walker. Short term memory is a serious issue. Our biggest fear is for her career and lifestyle. My dad is holding up very well ... he's used to stress I guess.

Again, thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts. [:D]

I can't imagine how difficult of a time this must be for you but I do believe in the power of prayer and your family is in my prayers...

SirKenin -> RE: Thoughts On Organized Religion. (10/6/2006 5:07:09 PM)

I looked it up in the Bible.  Low and behold, in Piety 1:26 it says "Thou shalt wear your very best suit or dress, go to Church in your Lexus and pretend to be someone you are not.  Amen".

So I think to Myself.  Does God give a damn that you drive a Cadillac to church when in reality all you can afford is a Topaz?  Does God give you bonus points for wearing your best suit when that money could have fed your kids for two weeks?  Does that give you an express lane to Heaven or something?   Maybe God cares that you make an extra effort to show that you are putting something in the collection plate.  Do you have to eat a cracker and drink grape juice in order to get on God's good side?  Maybe the congregation has to sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in order to get God to visit.

It is all a facade.  A giant crock of shit.  Church has become a show.  An exercise in piety.  A demonstration of "superior" morals.  Mass mind control.  It has become some sort of effort, as though you are not going to Heaven if you do not drag your ass out of bed every Sunday morning.  It used to be a fellowship of believers.  Now it is just a joke.

"Where two or three are gathered together..."  Notice he never specifies where.
