MissyRane -> Elections (10/8/2006 5:31:54 AM)

So president elections are comin closer n closer...I saw this newsarticle that said that somebody wrote a book Oprah for President: Run Oprah Run so I started thinking....how far would you think she would make it if she decided to give it a go? I think she'd make it pretty far..but I don't know if she's really one of those persons you see as a president lol but what do you guys think?[:)] and what is your opinion on the upcoming elections?

Level -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 5:39:57 AM)

I honestly think Oprah would have a shot at winning, but I would need to know her stance on things before I could say I'd support her.

The mid-term elections next month........ are up in the air. The Democrats should make up some ground, maybe take back the House of Reps....

The presidential elections will come up in what, 2008? The Democrats have such a pathetic field of front-runners so far, I can't see them winning. Hillary? No. Joe Biden? No. John Kerry? No. Bill Richardson? He'd do a good job, but doubt he'd win. Barack Obama? Another good canidate, but likely not in 2008.

LOL..true.

More seriously (it happens sometimes..lol), as for Oprah, I honestly don't know enough about this person to know if she would have a viable chance in a Presidential race or not. Most of what I know about her I have read off the cover of tabloids in the checkout line. I am not opposed to anyone running for office due to their gender, my main concern about anyone famous (even if not to me), would be that they may have forgotten where they came from. I fear that on the occasion that we do see someone that worked their way up, the majority of the time we end up with the result and not the roots. I might be more inclined to vote for Joe or Sue Smith over someone in the limelight, if they have valid ideals, a proactive stance on current issues and a vision of the future.

I'd say Oprah is a grounded person, even though she lives in luxury. I believe she remembers where she came from, and she seems to be very able to connect to everyday people. Of course, not having hung out with her, I could be wrong lol. [:D]

A woman of color has no chance of betting elected POTUS any time soon. There are still far too many racists and sexists to give even Oprah a chance at winning.

Level -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 7:31:50 AM)

Ken, I agree there are lots of bigots in the world, but I can see Oprah and Condi Rice maybe bridging that gap.

meatcleaver -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 7:47:33 AM)

While I can see why Oprah is an American icon and why people like her, I fail to see any presidential qualities in her. In fact I think she would be a disaster as a leader. Politics is a rough dirty business and no matter how much people say they want their politicians to be honest and like the rest of us, if they were, they wouldn't get elected.

GWB originally portrayed himself as just an ordinary fella and oh my god, he wasn't just ordinary, he seems less educated and less intelligent as the blokes you find down at the bar who sort the world's problems out over a beer at lunch time. There really is no substitute for a well educated, wiley political operator.

I think Oprah would be sliced and diced in the first political battle she encountered.

Level -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 7:59:04 AM)

Good point. She did seem "wobbly" when she got sued a few years ago, and politics is like bathing in a sulphurous pit full of devils.

subfever -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 8:33:18 AM)

My prediction:

Oprah will be Barack Obama's main pillar of support for his run for presidency in 2012. She has the both the money and the popularity to support at least an admirable run on his behalf.

But Obama will have to get in bed with the powers-that-be if he wants a victory.

WyrdRich -> RE: Elections (10/8/2006 9:06:43 AM)

    This mid-term election is the first since I started following politics for myself where I'm not confident about how it will turn out.  I'm guessing the Dems will make significant gains in both chambers but not take control.  I wouldn't bet a nickel on it though.

    '08 could be wild card year, when the general electorate tells the radical base of both parties they have gone too far.
