Apparently, cat owners tend to be people who can give love without receiving but dog owners can't.

I guess it depends on the cat in question. My cats come when called generally and are very affectionate - perhaps overly so. I have one that effectively follows me around everywhere I go when I am home. Hell, they even like each other and regularly snuggle together.

They look stressed, huh?

When they snuggle, one will leave her inidividual donut and join the other cat in her's (e.g., one scenario only). There's not really room for two, but they don't seem to care.

So sorry, NG. I gots to call bullshit on you.

The Four-leggeds, Winged-ones and the others are as important as the Two-leggends. They are our companions, helping and aiding us on our journey. Passing is also a part of life, as we all know. It's ok to be sad for yourself when a friend passes...but feel joy, too, that they are continuing their journey. He won't leave until it's time. It may not be time for you, but it will be for him. *hugs*

The content of the above link is roughly what I was trying to say. Just a light-hearted look at cats and dogs.

I admit my bias towards dogs but your cats look as happy as pigs in the proverbial so good luck to them. My sister took in a stray with 3 legs after a car accident. She lives in the UAE so it's a desert cat with a long snout. Quite a bonny looking thing but it is the biggest, fattest, greediest cat on this earth. It is a monster. God only knows how it manages to carry that bulk around on its 3 legs.

This may be true everywhere, but Miami is inundated with cats.  The rescue
group I work with can't take any more. So, if any of you want to rescue a cat,
I ask you to please contact me.  Perhaps, we can fly a cat out to where ever
you live, or you can visit Miami.

My cat Fred is about seventeen years old.  He's deaf, loosing his hair along his back and going grey.  I've always had cats.  I can't imagine not having one.  Fred, by far is the best I've ever owned.  He is laid back, has a sense of humor and is just a cuddly joy.  I just get sad, knowing how old he is.  Knowing that it's only a matter of time until he dies.  It's amazing how attached one can get to a furry little creature.

Aileen, my heart goes out to you.  It seems it never rains but it pours; two of my girlfriends and my unmentionable have lost pets in the past few months.  The grief is very real.

i am a cat lover myself, and would have one if permitted by my housing ass'n.  i think they are great companions.

Wishing you the very best:

The comment of mine that you have quoted is aimed at cat and dog owners rather than cats and dogs.

The theory goes that dog owners are attracted to dogs because they are pack animals and are blatantly and consistently affectionate to the leader of the pack i.e. wagging of tail etc. Thus, it's a perceived easy source of affection for dog owners and, according to the theory, this is the attraction for the dog owner. Apparently, cat owners do not require this same open and tangible sense of affection and thus dogs don't hold the same attraction.

The comment about coming home from work to a cat was tongue in cheek and not meant to be offensive to Aileen. It's fair to say I don't pretend to have the first clue about what is going on in the mind of a cat, how would I when I'm not a cat?

As said previously, good luck with your cat, Aileen.

Aileen68 -> RE: My Old Cat (10/8/2006 5:29:05 PM)

No offense taken.  I have a dog and a cat, two cats actually.  But my second cat, who is also the same age and a sister to Fred, lives down in the basement because she pees on everything.  Anyway...there is a huge difference between cats and dogs and cat people and dog people.  So I do understand exactly where you are coming from.

My parents bought me a cat when I was 12 years old.  I spent my entire childhood in love with that cat.  I would chase her all hours of the day or night to pet her or
drag her to bed.

When I was 39, and she was blind, could hardly move, deaf, and starting to experience major organ shutdown, she was put to sleep.

I love you, Galadriel, even if I never called you anything but "The Blighter."  I have never had a pet I loved as much as I loved you.

Kedicat -> RE: My Old Cat (10/9/2006 2:21:33 AM)

My nic is in remembrance of a good friend feline. And I had another cat called Fred. Her sister was named Ted. No need to burden them with gender bias. My next pets, ferrets were also Fred and Ted. Alas Fred has passed on, but cranky Ted is still here.

I think Ted is my last pet/friend. I always have a little guilt of having a pet. I get them second hand or from the pound/shelter. All in all though, I always feel I don't really have that right, to keep something that has no ability to choose it's lot with me.

On are occasions, a wild animal will come close. Even rarer, they have contacted. That is special. They make that choice. Be it curiosity or desperation. I loved all my pet/friends. But those creatures that sought to come to me, even for a moment were very special and meant something else.

Poor little thing, kept in the basement. Mind you, if she's merrily dousing your furniture/friends in her fragrance then desperate times = desperate measures!

Is she beyond the age of training? Maybe she's a bit disorientated and needs a helping hand. I'm not sure about cats but dogs will become seriously disorientated if not trained. They need to know their place through quality training - anything less is not good for their well-being. Dogs look at themselves and the humans of the household as part of the same pack so it is essential they are trained to be subordinate to the house/pack members or they will become disorientated, unruly and challenge authority. In most cases it will be simple disobedience but in extreme cases they will attack the children of the house in an attempt to elevate themselves in pack status.

This is why any dog owner with children must involve children in the training of dogs and ensure the child strokes the dog on the child's terms rather than when the dog wants stroking. Training the dog in this way ensures the dog knows it is subordinate to the child and will not challenge the child's authority in an attack. If a dog is trained and owned in the correct manner it is an amazing animal, truely impressive.

One thing I find really impressive about cats is their patience. If you've ever watched a cat hunt a bird (we've nothing better to do over here) it will sit still for hours with its eyes fixed on the bird hoping for the bird to switch off so the cat can pounce. It's an impressive sight.

Devilslilsister -> RE: My Old Cat (10/9/2006 10:53:17 AM)

I have to agree with Chaingang on that.  I have a dog and 3 cats at the moment.  I've had a few dogs, but i'm very picky about getting attached to them. (its a long story)  Though i've had a wide variety of cats.  Generally they're all found or from a pound or shelter.

and i would love to go into detail about all their personalities so well they're written down in history and never forgotten but i'm exshausted right now.

so imma take a nap instead

Shelter dogs are just the very best!!

My newest addition just puts a smile on my face the minute I look at her, even if she does have a chewed bra in her mouth..........
