America's cardboard army of Flat Daddies boosts families

Paul Harris and Javier Espinoza

It is one of the hardest things about being a military family. How to cope when a husband and father, or wife and mother, is posted abroad, especially to combat zones such as Iraq or Afghanistan.
Now the United States army has come up with a bizarre solution: Flat Daddy and Flat Mommy.

Holy shit.  i can only wonder whether these cardboards figures will cost the Dept. of Defense $6,000 apiece, like toilet seats do.

Hehehehe.  This struck me funny, but if it helps the families, I'm all for it.

A much better program is the one with travelling satelite linked trailers full of phone booths for the troops.  They can sit in climate controlled comfort and be linked to the military installation closest to home to make calls.  A big improvement over the HAM radio based system of 20 years ago.

OT, but a peeve of mine-

The USMC pays about twenty-five dollars for a toilet seat. I assume the other branches are about the same.

Whoever came up with the idea of hiding the 'Black Budget" in such accounting back in the 80's really blew it.  I doubt these stories will ever go away.
