It has occurred to me:

If we payed as much attention to what politicians do, as we do to what football players do, there would be different people in jail.

This after watching football for the first time in quite a while. Seeing all the high tech, high speed cameras that almost catch every glimpse, I can't understand why sports players are under such scutiny and those who spend our money and wield the most important decisions in the world possibly, are not.

Excellent point.

But in all honesty, I sure the hell enjoyed watching the Bears kick ass again today! ...

Could it be because us mere mortals arent allowed to actually see whats going on in the world of  politics? We only know what we are told!!
Same old.

The whole point of spectator sports is to stop you scrutinizing the politicians. The Romans understood that.

And heres me thinking sport was entertainment.
As for the romans - nothing they liked more than a good old bloody gladiator match - nothing to do with politics.

Precisely. Why do you think the politicians and patriarchs paid for such games?

"North Dallas Forty" the movie with Nick Nolte ruined football and most "sports" for me.
I'm watching the "Dallas" Cowboys vs the "Philladelphia" Eagles on tv right now.
The only thing is is that more correctly I'm watching two Business Corporation's "teams" playing each other on t.v.
Why should I care who wins if (I'm) not going to make any money from it?
Then other big corporations will advertise to me trying to get me to buy their products.
This may be "entertaining" for the businesses but how do I score?
How do I make money from this short of a bookie?

And when you think about it the players aren't really stars they're highly paid corporate employees.
If I lived in any city with a football team it's really not "my" team, is it?

For those of us who enjoy certain sports and i sure love watching my paul deacon run around on a rugby pitch and rafael nadal hitting balls on a tennis court sport isnt about making money. Its about enjoying watching it. If you dont like sport dont watch it - go find a new way to make some money.
You come across very mercenary in this post and im not sure why - the link was sports and politics!!
Im confuzzled

It kept the rabble occupied and their minds off politics. People prefer trivia to things of importance. As Juvenal said “Two things only the people anxiously desire - bread and circuses"

Its called rule by secrecy.

Total secrecy for them.

Total transparency for us.

They can know EVERYTHING about us....but god forbid if WE investigate THEM.

I call it New Fuedalism.

They are the barons and lords in the high castle, and WE aare their serfs.

When actually..they are supposed to serve us.

I completely agree...not just politics..but crucial issues.
