By now I expected to be writing a rave review for House of Flying Daggers. These reviews show the critics loved it. And I have high expectations because it was made by the same director who made Hero. The critics loved that too and I went to see it 3 times which I've never done before. One time I even took my 80 something year old mother. Anyway, it seems that there are supernatural forces plotting to keep me away from seeing this new movie.

House of Flying Daggers has had limited release for a while, but wasn't around here and I've been checking every week to see if it is in. Then ma sent an e-mail -- said she went to see it! (guess she liked Hero) So I checked the movie schedule and Voila! I made plans to go see it the next day. But it was snowing real hard so decided to wait a day, and when I got to the theather it was gone! Kept it one week then yanked it. Grrrr.

So I checked other theaters in the region and found it was in one about 1 hour drive, and if I left quick I could make it. Checked the location -- it was in some mall off the main road, so I shot down there and couldn't find it within time to be even 10 minutes late. I figured I'd go back today, but checked the schedule and it was yanked out overnight.

I found another place about 1:15 away. Got there in plenty of time, and it was playing as scheduled. Then as the previews started rolling it was clear there was a problem with the projector and that full screen mode made folks look "stretched" so people looked skinny, or they could show a cropped version of the image. Then the movie started they tried that, but it cropped the subtitles, and we all left and got our money back.

I guess I get to try again next week -- supposed to have a snowstorm over the weekend. Now I'm wondering what else will happen.

[:D] That's too funny. It's not even playing here in Florida, maybe we are late adopters. I hope you get to see it soon and report back to me because you are my Siskel & Ebert.

Ann, I found this nifty movie locator and it does show House of Flying Daggers playing in your area. So why don't you drag your ass out to see it and then you can tell me what I've been missing.

And though I feel flattered you would call me your Siskel & Ebert, you'd be a lot better off going to that metacritic web site that I've linked in the first post above. On one side of the page it lists all the films currently in theaters as well as those in limited release, and you can search for others you've heard about. Then you can see what a bunch of critics have to say instead of relying on any one or two.

Anyway, it is pretty funny that my ma got out to see this artsy martial arts movie before me.

I got on the link but the movie isn't playing on this side of Florida. I'll keep looking. By the way, please make your links a different color because I missed them before, k?

Good luck in finding the movie.[:)]

SUCCESS! I saw the movie today and about all I can say is WOW! Like Hero, House of Flying Daggers is a visual treat! It is pretty amazing the way the director seems to pay attention to color composition as well as everything else, so a lot of the images are suitable for framing.

Considering that things went wrong on 3 previous attempts to see this movie, I was tortured wondering what would happen today. First I expected to run out of gas before I got to the station, but that didn't happen. Then I thought I was gonna skid into the ditch when I went around a corner and hit a patch of snow on otherwise dry roads, but I escaped that too. Then when I was speeding in an enforcement zone on the highway and saw a cop with his lights flashing in my rear view mirror, I thought I was nailed for sure. But he just went by me. Then I was stuck in traffic on the off-ramp for about 10 minutes and figured I would be real late, but I found the theater and got in my seat just as the movie started.

So it was like fate teased me all day without bending me over and screwing me yet again.
