Termyn8or -> Problems with fast reply (10/9/2006 10:09:21 AM)

It seems to lock up completely. I'm not sure if this is an amount of time or a number of characters, I simply can't tell. It locks up IE and loses cursor control, it stays a text cursor no matter what. I can get out of it with Ctrl+Alt+Del, or actually I can still minimize it because I have "Show desktop" and my taskbar is set to auto hide. Folks, put that taskbar on auto hide, you'll be glad you did. I have let it sit there a while and did other stuff, but when I come back to it, it is still locked up. Is there some type of limitation in fast reply of which I am unaware ? Or is the problem on my end ? Y'all know I can get longwinded, perhaps I am overloading a buffer of some sort. I have seen "Fast reply" at the beginning of some posts, do you put that in manually ? My PC does not do it automatically. Is it a browser issue ? I'm using IE6.2800.1106. I can avoid using fast reply, but it is sort of nice to be able to scroll back to the other posts without switching windows. Also, the problem seems to be intermittent, sometimes it works fine, then other times I'll get just about done and it locks up. Grrrrr. My internet connection seems solid, I get 838K on a speed test and I never get bumped off of IRC even though I use Java to get there. I also have no problem connecting to a P2P network. The only problem that may or may not be related is that AOL has a hard time connecting, and that started when I changed the NIC. Now I have changed it again and nothing has changed. Probably cause AOL was installed with a different NIC and DSL modem. I am leaving that alone. Last time I tried to reinstall AOL it destroyed my OS, luckily I had a clone and only lost a few emails. My OS, 98SE, is heavily modified. I found out how to manually put things in the sendto menu and I have changed quite a few file associations to my liking. Basically I was, for a time, in a downloading frenzy. I've downloaded whole pages of results on a P2P and because I can play an almost unlimited number of songs/videos at once I can tell if the files are identical, and if not, just save the one with the best quality, or the most complete. Computer problems are something that I pay attention to, I have about 60 gigs of media on this thing and that's why I buy among the best harddrives. I haven't had a problem with a harddrive since I started buying Diamondmaxes. They are designed for abuse in TIVO machines. That is a taxing task, as it reads and writes video and audio simultaneously. They are also very quiet. I have lost so much on Western Digitals, I had about a fourth of blowout.com on one and that was the last WD folks. I'll never buy one again. That stuff is irreplacable. I don't know if this matters, but this OS has been cloned twice and transplanted once. You can't transplant XP, but I know how to do it in 98SE, and not only is the 98SE disk stored on the drive, it was actually installed off the drive. Wanna see a fast Windows install ? copy the disk to the HD first, I am talking fast. I mean you go take a piss and it is ½ done. CDs are incredibly slow. Regardless, fast reply and AOL are the only problems I have, and I don't think it has anything to do with the transplant. Cloning shouldn't cause any problems. Anyway, the main question is, is there a limitation of characters or time when using fast reply ? Is it possible that this is not a problem at all ? T
